View Full Version : The Story of Joel Robbins (BBCF and PFS dynasty)

I just started tinkering with the ability of BBCF's graduated Seniors (and declared underclassmen) to be imported into the PFS game to continue thier careers. I started my career in a fictional 1920 where all of the 2014 FBS schools are within BBCF as well as 32 NFL teams within PFS. I will be importing all Senior classes into PFS. I won't be doing game-by-game updates, per se, but I will highlight important milestones both in BBCF and PFS as I see them. The first story I want to tell is about QB Joel Robbins.
http://i.imgur.com/qbQJbqk.png
Joel Robbins was heavily recruited out of Centerville HS located in Centerville, IN. At the time he made his school choice, he was the #6 rated recruit in the country as well as the #2 rated QB. All of the major power schools such as Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan, USC, Florida State, Texas, etc were extremely nuts with this kid's ability and heavily recruited him. His HS senior year, He had the following stats:
Comp %: 67.8%
Yards: 4371
TD: 28
INT: 6
Rushing Yds: 92
When it comes time to choose his school, QB Joel Robbins shocks the entire country by going to..........

Yes. The #2 QB in all of the US went to a MAC school. Stunning can't believe to describe the feeling of the recruiting circles when he made his choice. In 1920, the Ohio Bobcats was a decent team (59 Prestige) prior to his arrival going 9-4 and winning the GoDaddy.com Bowl against the Georgia State Panthers 19-6. Well with their new wonder recruit, the Ohio Bobcats may go from a MAC power to an NCAA power. Enjoy the ride.

1921 and 1922 Seasons
QB Joel Robbins was redshirted his Freshman year and was 4th string in 1922 and did not play. The Ohio Bobcats were actually a burgeoning MAC power those years, going 9-4, winning the MAC championship, as well as winning the GoDaddy.Com Bowl (19-13 to the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks)in 1921. In 1922, the Ohio Bobcats finished 10-3 (but losing the MAC title to the Toledo Rockets)and losing in the Sun Bowl (13-10 to Wake Forest Deacons)
Robbins never complained and worked on his skills, hoping that he would get his shot to start in 1923.
During Spring practices in 1923, QB Joel Robbins was named the starter as a Redshirt Sophomore. He took that job and ran with it. With a vengence.

1923 Season (Redshirt Sophomore)
The NCAA had never seen a QB come out of no where like it did when QB Joel Robbins took the field. The Ohio Bobcats finished the regular season a sparkling 12-0. In the MAC Champioship Game, they beat the Central Michigan Chippewas by a score of 56-17. By the time the postseason slots were chosen, the Ohio Bobcats were the 10th ranked team in the nation and were even awarded a bid in the playoffs! They were the first MAC team to ever receive such an invite.
The accolades poured in for QB Joel Robbins. Here is his stats for the season:
Completions: 304

Compl %: 66.8%
Yards: 4648
TD: 43
INT: 9
Rating: 176.2

The man was a wrecking machine! And he was rewarded handsomely for his season. Here are a list of his awards:
1923 MAC Offensive Player of the Year
1923 1st Team All MAC
1923 1st Team All American
1923 Davey O'Brien Award
Last, but not least, QB Joel Robbins was awarded the........

Simply Stunning. From celebrated recruit, to redshirt, to 4th string, to Heisman award winner in his first year starting.
In the 1st round of the playoffs, the Ohio Bobcats travel to the Little Ceasars Pizza Bowl where they will face the mighty Florida Gators. In 1923, the Florida Gators were 9-2 in the regular season and a very tough opponent for a MAC team to face in the playoffs. Though the Ohio Bobcats were able to hang with the Florida Gators, the talent disparity was too great and the Ohio Bobcats lost 35-21. Amazing season both as a team and individually for QB Joel Robbins. He vowed to work even harder in the Spring and promised to lead his team back to the playoff and hopefully a National Championship.

1924 Season (Redshirt Junior)
After last year's explosion, how could it be possible for QB Joel to match or exceed that season for the ages? Well he sure did try! Here is his statline:
Completions: 298
Attempts: 468
Compl %: 63.7%

TD: 38

Amazing. Almost a duplicate season. His awards reflected his season:
1924 MAC Offensive Player of the Year (2nd time)
1924 1st Team All MAC (2nd time)
1924 1st Team All American (2nd time)
1924 Davey O'Brien Award (2nd time)
He also wins:
http://i.imgur.com/pGtmQBp.jpg
For the first time in history, a player wins the Heisman Trophy twice. He is offically an all-time college great.
The Ohio Bobcats again finish the regular season 11-0. Here is how they buzzsawed their way through the season:
http://i.imgur.com/9mUNnoV.png
In the MAC Championship game, the Ohio Bobcats played the Northern Illinois Huskies. The game went to overtime, but a fumble returned for a touchdown ended the Bobcats National Championship dreams and the lost 34-28. They did get an invite to the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl where they destroyed the Oregon State Beavers by the score of 55-17. As usual, QB Joel Robbins was the MVP of that game.
Though he could leave for the NFL Draft as a redshirt Junior, he makes the tough decision to return to school one more year to win that National Title. Being the best QB in the country, he is convinced he can get his team there.

Halfway through the season and the Ohio Bobcats are a sparkling 6-0 behind one of the greatest quarterbacks the NCAA has seen in QB Joel Robbins. Last game continued his stellar performances:

Only downside is he was sacked 4 times and him risking injury kills this teams chances at a national championship. Also, though 6-0, this team is still not ranked. That should change real soon though.
Through week 7, QB Joel Robbins has the following stats:

For the first time this season, the Ohio Bobcats actually trailed in a game. At the end of the 1st quarter, the Akron Zip led 10-7. QB Joel Robbins uncharacteristically threw two interceptions in the first quarter.

Once again the Bobcats get off to a slow 1st quarter start by trailing 7-0. That didn't last long as they routed the Golden Flashes the remainder of the game.

So now the Ohio Bobcats quest for a National Championship begins. Next week, in the 1st round of the playoffs, they travel to Memphis to play in the Liberty Bowl. I personally believe they got hosed in the seeding as they are a 12th seed playing the 5th seed.
The 6th Ranked (12-0) Texas-El Paso Miners are a defensive focused team (2nd ranked in the NCAA) and is led by the Defensive Player of the Year DE Andy Hardy. He had a monster year with 19 sacks and 17 QB hurries. Offensively, they are very good, but not on the Bobcats level (34th in the nation). Gonna be a tough game.

<a href="http://imgur.com/R6L3yFC"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/R6L3yFC.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>
Tennessee Titans
This is not a great situation for him as the Titans have drafted 3 other QBs in the last 2 drafts. The starter is an 11 year vet, so if Robbins can stick on the roster, he may be able to battle for a 3rd string job in the future. As is, he is the 4th string QB and most likely headed to the Practice Squad. Bummer.

We fast forward to week 10 because something weird happens. Both the 1st string and 2nd string QBs get injured within 2 minutes of each other. The first stringer sustains a Broken Jaw and the 2nd stringer got a concussion. So QB Joel Robbins is thrown right into the fire and performs admirably:

The game really was not as close as the score indicates as the Titans scored a late touchdown. QB Joel Robbins actually played decently, though he could have been a tad more accurate. Not sure I agree with the focus on the short passing game, but with a rookie QB, I get what the OC is trying to do:

Robbins is really not playing badly at all. The OC is putting him a position to succeed with high percentage passes, and he is taking advantage of it, for the most part. The hope is he will be a bit more careful with the ball in the future and lower the interceptions.
The Titans travel to Florida to take on the (1-12) Jacksonville Jaguars. Looks as if the 2nd string QB will be healthy enough to start next week, but we shall see. Robbins has not been terrible, so maybe the coaching staff will ride the 'hot' hand.

1927 Season (Training Camp)
The Tennessee Titans had 4 young QBs on their roster last year, all around the same talent level. The Titans could not play them all (and also drafted 2 more QBs), so something had to give. QB Joel Robbins could see the writing on the wall and called his agent. He needed a better situation.
His agent called up the Titan GM and told him that Robbins was not happy with 6 QBs on the roster and wanted a chance to go elsewhere. The GM granted his wish and actually released him when no trade offers where forthcoming. So now Robbins is a free agent.

This is a much better situation as he is immediately installed as the 2nd string QB. Though their is a rookie QB in front of him, they are close in ability and Robbins could pass the rookie with solid training camps.
Here is a look at the depth chart:

Looks like the Browns are serious this year. They took down the last undefeated team in the league. QB Joel Robbins had a monster game:
Comp: 33
Att: 45
Yards: 377
TD: 3
Int: 1
Car: 2
Yards: 3
TD: 0
It is going to be really interesting to see what happens going forward. This team is a contender now.
Here are the midseason stats for Robbins:

Very weird game. And these pick 6 interceptions are going to kill this team in the playoffs. QB Joel Robbins was good (absent the pick 6):
Comp: 26
Att: 41
Yards: 297
TD: 3
Int: 1
Car: 0
Yards: 0
TD: 0

1930 Season (Week 10-11)
The Cleveland Browns had a bye in week 10, so it's onto week 11.

Another pick 6! And they come at the WORSE times too. I have now figured out which current NFL QB we can compare QB Joel Robbins too. He is Jay Cutler. Flashes of brilliance coupled with foolish, back-breaking turnovers. And as a Bears fan, I know this type of QB play all too well. Robbins struggled:
Comp: 14
Att: 24
Yards: 126
TD: 1
Int: 2
Car: 3
Yards: 3
TD: 0
The Browns have dropped two in a row. We need to stop the bleeding now.

Ugh. This game was very winnable. QB Joel 'Pick 6' Robbins is regressing. It's almost like the opponents have figured him out:
Comp: 25
Att: 39
Yards: 270
TD: 2
Int: 3
Car: 0
Yards: 0
TD: 0
A few games ago, the Browns were 7-1 and sitting pretty in the AFC North. With three losses in a row, the Pittsburgh Steelers have now caught the Browns and we are now tied with them.
Gotta end this slide.

And here I was talking about Playoffs. PLAYOFFS?!? (Shout out to Jim Mora). We have yet to win a game in the 2nd half of the season. Anyway, this was an ugly loss. QB Joel Robbins was pretty average:
Comp: 19
Att: 38
Yards: 234
TD: 1
Int: 1
Car: 1
Yards: 0
TD: 0
We are now out of the lead in the AFC North and will be fighting for a wild card spot. Here is the playoff race standings:

Making up those two games is going to be tough. Here is our remaining schedule:

That Week 17 game against the Ravens is going to be a monster. We will both be fighting for a playoff spot, most likely. The other games aren't too tough, but gosh we need to play better.

Good things happen when you don' throw pick 6 interceptions, huh? QB Joel Robbins played great:
Comp: 17
Att: 31
Yards: 234
TD: 1
Int: 0
Car: 1
Yards: 6
TD: 0
We need 3 more performances like this. Does he have that in him?

Two down, two to go. QB Joel Robbins seems to have gotten over his midseason issues and is finishing strong:
Comp: 18
Att: 31
Yards: 328
TD: 3
Int: 1
Car: 0
Yards: 0
TD: 0
We are back in the lead in the AFC North. We now control our own destiny. Win and we are in. Simple, right?

1930 Season (Week 16)
http://i.imgur.com/IvOvGPd.png
Only one more game to go. We are in the driver's seat for the Playoffs. QB Joel Robbins has been outstanding as of late:
Comp: 24
Att: 36
Yards: 286
TD: 2
Int: 1
Car: 2
Yards: 19
TD: 0
Win and we are in. If we lose and the Steelers win, then we go to tiebreakers. There is a lot riding on this next game against the Ravens.

1930 Season (Week 17)
http://i.imgur.com/WIDNoME.png
With the Pittsburgh Steelers losing their game, the Cleveland Browns win the division ans will play the (11-5) New York Jets in the playoffs!
QB Joel Robbins was horrible against the Ravens:
Comp: 18
Att: 32
Yards: 191
TD: 0
Int: 3
Car: 1
Yards: 5
TD: 0
He can't get away with that against the Jets. Here is how these two teams matchup:
http://i.imgur.com/35ukoF0.png
Their starting QB will not be playing, which is great for us. They have the 3rd ranked rushing offense in the league, so we have to focus on this. If Robbins can avoid the turnovers, we should win especially since we are playing at home. Wish us luck.

1930 Season (Wildcard Playoffs)
http://i.imgur.com/Dd67WQM.png
The Browns started strong, fell behind and then a 76 yard bomb late in the 4th quarter decides the game. QB Joel Robbins was up and down on the day:
Comp: 20
Att: 33
Yards: 283
TD: 3
Int: 2
Car: 0
Yards: 0
TD: 0
So in the Divisional round of the playoffs, the Browns travel to California to take on the (11-5) San Diego Chargers. Here is the matchup:
http://i.imgur.com/UvWmu9x.png
The Chargers are pretty middle of the road both offensively and defensively. It is going to take a perfect game to beat them in their house though.

http://i.imgur.com/wV2Nhe7.png
And that does it. The Brown could not get anything going. QB Joel Robbins did not play well and that was that:
Comp: 12
Att: 28
Yards:138
TD: 0
Int: 1
Car: 1
Yards: -4
TD: 0
All in all, this season counts as a successful one for the Cleaveland Browns as well as for QB Joel Robbins. Here is how he ended the season:

Way too many interceptions, but he was ok everywhere else. Something to build on, I hope.

1931 Season (Entire Season)
Man, football is a tough business. After the draft and training camp, QB Joel Robbins was still the starting QB. He even started the first preseason game. However, the Cleveland Browns decided they wanted the rookie QB the drafted last year to start, so they released Robbins. After leading his team to the playoffs and actually winning a playoff game, Robbins was cut. Sigh.
No worries though, right? He will immediately be picked up. So he went home and waited. And waited. And waited. And waited. Week 9 rolls around and he gets a call. After a brief conversation, he agrees to sign with his 4th team:
http://i.imgur.com/Q4wCaAF.png
Atlanta Falcons!
The Falcon's starting QB season ended after breaking his kneecap during a week 7 game, so Robbins was signed as the 3rd string QB. And of course, he did not play.
Looks like his journeyman status begins.
