The premise here is, a family buys an NBA team in 1990 and runs it for a few decades or more. My college league is in 2050-51, so there's some time there to sim. I've been simming a new history for the pro league since 1939 seeded with college players from the same college save (it's a pro resim) and this time, I can get a bit more granular about looking at the pro players since I don't have to keep up with the college league at the same time.
I'm mostly interested in the family history part of this, following how they manage the team and what direction we take, along with maybe some fan reaction writing as time goes on. My approach to the story will largely be as someone watching things happen, though I might be GMing at times, it'll largely be based around the storyline.
You'll see what I mean as things evolve, I guess.

My leagues operates in a static modern financials across the board, so there isn't any real inflation, just FYI. Think of the "years" as a consistently playing in modern times rather than a historical allegory.
Darius Patterson will acquire the moribund Los Angeles Lakers in a deal that puts the big city club in the hands of a new owner for the first time since the trust of T.P. Lazowski owned the team from its inception. The Lakers have been a perennial NBA dormat, winning their last division title in 1959.
Patterson, 39, will become the league's youngest owner and first black owner of a franchise. Patterson was an engineer at Microsoft during its early days and later left for Apple. He cashed his options on both during their IPOs and became one of several multi-millionaires as a result.
"We're proud to be part of the NBA family. We're going to turn things around in Los Angeles. I'm happy to be here and think it's time this city was accustomed to a winning basketball team," said Patterson in a statement.

For such a middling team, the Lakers sure do have a lot of dudes under expensive contracts. The first order of business from ownership to the new GM was to hire new coaches and also to drop these contracts and start afresh. We've been bad for this long, what's a few more years of terribleness while we figure out what our identity is going to be in Los Angeles? (Besides hot garbage)

Wow!! The Lakers are abhorrent. Never good when your trophy case only contains trophies from the 1950's. Looking forward to this.

1990-91 SEASON
I'm mostly going to run this as a fan-reaction type dynasty rather than get too involved, especially in the beginning because otherwise it takes too long. The "family" will intervene at different times, but I won't telegraph what those decisions are, we'll just react to everything. Mostly I'm simming everything though, just for speed purposes.
No big shock here, despite the Lakers going and getting new ownership, team is still pretty bad. They did make a move I really like, swiping Marshall Perkins from Denver for future picks, he was a rookie and was first-team all rookie. He has a lot of potential. I'm also excited about two imports - Sunday Akinmunde and Jimmy Möttönen - if they can develop, they'll be lethal additions. The D-League will have to do, since there's no draft and stash in this game, though I could do it manually I guess.

1991-92
40 win season doesn't sound like much, but it's the first 40+ win season for the franchise in 20 years. Are things looking up in LA? Marshall Perkins is still the real deal, too.
Detroit beat New Mexico in the NBA Finals.

They need to drop Jon Hawes, he's garbage and past his prime. (There's no cap penalties for dropping contracts, this is the NFL-lite), provided they can resign the option year guys and get another front-line player who isn't past his prime...this team has a chance to *gasp* make the playoffs next year.

I'm done simming for the night. My next project will likely be to look around the world and do some scouting to see who the best players are in the non-NBA and see if we can poach any of them. I think that'll be the legacy of the Lakers at least for the interim is making them (real world) Spurs-like in their ability to mine for foreign talent.

1992-93 RECAP
Another disappointing season in LA. Just when we thought there would be some progress, the Euro exports we brought over to shake up the NBA not surprisingly weren't able to do it. This team is in a holding pattern, needs a franchise-type player but this league really operates on teams that have more than one elite guy to be honest.
Anyway, it was a disappointing year full stuff. On to the next one.
The team is $11m under the salary cap, so there's room for navigating somehow, but...I'm not quite sure what'll happen yet.
New Orleans beat Toronto in the NBA Finals

NBA salary cap is going up from $60m to $80m. I've been operating in a static setup for a while wrt to salary across the league, but this will enable teams to repatriate guys who might go overseas for bigger contracts and consolidate more of the talent in the NBA, with my hope is that it'll increase parity across the league because if you look at the first post, there are a lot of dynasties.
Which I know is basketball in a nutshell, but I'd like to see if we can upend it a bit through $.

48 wins is the most wins for a Lakers team since 1966. It's too bad they couldn't get beyond the opening round of the post-season, but I suppose we can't complain given how long it took to deliver a modicum of progress.
If we'd won two more games, we'd have claimed our first division title since the 50s, so perhaps next year things will accelerate? One can hope. We're still under the salary cap, too by $14m, so that's enough to sign a star player.

1993-94
Lakers make the postseason in back to back years. Again just one game out of a division title. Last time we made back to back post-seasons was 1978-79. This year we're a 4-seed, last year we were a 3-seed and lost in the first round, so..who knows how things will go -- if any better at all.

We were swept by the 5-seed Warriors, but it was an upset-minded year, both top seeds also lost in the first round in both conferences. Pistons swept the Warriors in the NBA Finals.

The Lakers need to find a way to offload Marshall Perkins. He's got a contract that's among tops on the team, but his production post his all-star year a few seasons ago has been minimal, he was even demoted to the D-League at one point.
Not sure where he's going to go, but he's still young and has potential, I just think his time in LA has to have come to an end. We'll see what management does with him though, I don't have high hopes he'll be gone.

1995-96 SEASON
RECORD: 33-49 7th Pacific Division
NBA FINALS: Louisville Rockets def. New Orleans Pelicans 4-3
After two good years, the Lakers are back to themselves again finishing nearly dead last in the Pacific Division. Management didn't offload Marshall Perkins because they suck or maybe because no one wanted him? Who knows?
Six years of ownership by Patterson's group and the Lakers are a topsy turvey franchise. Perhaps this year's tank job will result in a draft pick worth taking, but they haven't been super great at growing this team through the draft EVER, so I'm not sure why we should get our hopes up about that, too.

1996 OFF-SEASON
Marshall Perkins got traded to the Chicago Bulls in a four-team trade at the start of the off-season. Fans won't be happy, he was enigmatic but popular, but it was time for regime change.

Another trade post-draft
We got PG Terciero Flores, the 76ers 1st round draft pick this year in a three-team deal with Boston. Boston sent PF Larry Hanks in exchange for a future 1st (1998) and my 1st round (9th overall) this year Hector Wooton, who I don't quite understand what the GM was thinking taking him at all.
Philly got SF Avery Wadley from Los Angeles, PF Harley Gomez, a barely used reserve and a 1997 2nd rounder in exchange for Flores, probably too much, but I liked the kid when he was in college and insist he plays for us. He might be garbage, but...we'll just see.
I don't necessarily recognize this team right now and I'm not entirely sure they'll be any better than they were last year, but in theory, with Hanks and Kincaid, they won't be any worse.
These are the first two times I've made any moves for the club since the Patterson group took over the Lakers. I figure we'll at least be able to judge their moves now better than just watching the computer GM make moves, though they can obviously trade players I've brought in away since I sim entire seasons at a time before checking in to see what happened.

This is not what I was expecting after recapping the year. I'm not even simming ahead, because I'm legitimately wondering what happened and how they managed this. But... after all of that overwrought insanity, the Los Angeles Lakers are your 1996-97 NBA Champions.
I can't believe it.

Here's our difference maker. Brian Kovach, a journeyman guard who has only spent two years playing stateside, who we got as a free agent. He was a critical piece of the success puzzle, giving us a ball distributing guard that we desperately needed and complemented our front line stars really well. Proves there's talent overseas that can play in the NBA but you have to find it, I guess. I had no hand in getting him here, that was all management.

RECAP
The Lakers make the post-season for the 5th time in 6 years and while they didn't win a title, it doesn't matter because THIS IS THE LAKERS AND WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THEM BEING A CONSISTENT PLAYOFF TEAM WHAT IS HAPPENING?
Larry Frank retired but management signed to a free agent deal and he made the club younger and filled that spot admirably. Gone is Brian Kovach as well.
I think really while it's disappointing to not make it back to the Finals, I can't really say I had any expectations of this team. At least it wasn't a massive regression, tbh.
We're going to expand the 2nd round and beyond to best-of-seven starting next year too. But this Lakers club is very young - our oldest player is 31 - so it'll be interesting to see if management can keep the core group together or not.
The Wizards beat Seattle to win the NBA title.

Lakers win their 2nd NBA title
They beat the Pistons in 5 games to claim their 2nd title in franchise history. They lost in the league finals last year (I didn't get to record the 98-99 season)
So this is their 3rd Finals appearance in 4 years and their 2nd title. I think we can say this takeover of the franchise was a success, even if we weren't really responsible for turning things around dramatically. Like, normally I'd make a lot of moves and do crazy things. I didn't do that. I made trades that I posted and left the rest to the management and they turned things around on their own from there.

The other thing I did, mostly to mix things up since it doesn't really matter in an alternate universe is to import my D2 and D3 parallel saves into the game but as draftees for other leagues (USBL and Canadian League) which means you're going to end up with really good players who eventually sign deals with NBA teams. I lowered the number of players the game imports from my normal "All" to 500 and I might lower it more and more as it goes on, but with how many leagues I have, it seems like it'd be worthwhile to have as many draftees from the game imported into this as possible.
The idea of having D1/D2/D3 players into the game keeps things interesting for me even if it means too many good players, but it'll also mean you'll get good players overseas in leagues that they'd normally not end up in, provided it works how I think it will over time.

I've redone the FBCB files for D2 and D3 so that the talent is reflective of that level rather than D1 in D2/D3 clothing and so I'm going sim a decade or so to flush things.

I think I've done a minor league basketball journeyman GM dynasty before and I need to search for it to see how it went, but I'm intrigued by that again since I've got so many leagues active in this particular setup.
