CGL Season 4 Final

Preview
Montreal's dominance over the past 2 seasons has been breathtaking. Ottawa won the first 2 seasons, with Montreal remaining competitive during that run. They grabbed the torch in S3 and haven't looked back since, being the best team overall in the league's short history. They are led RB Jeremy Folland and DL Mitchell Jones who are both at the top of their games.

Saskatoon's season has gone pretty much exactly according to what they hoped when they were able to lure QB Tony Klassen away from losing ways in Calgary. They have the best OL in the league and a strong running game to pair with a good pass attack. The defence has looked shaky against the run, which has to be a concern heading into the final game.

CGL Final Game Report

Saskatoon gameplanned all week to stop star RB Jeremy Folland. The problem with that approach was that Montreal had a second RB who could be dangerous in RB Malachi Wilson, who used to be Saskatoon's until he left for FA in a surprise move. He was all over the field and took advantage of some fakes to Folland to run wild.

Saskatoon's defence made a couple big plays early but any chance for a competitive game was snuffed out when long-time standout DB Noah Blood (who previously starred for Vancouver) returned an interception 8 zones for a safety, breaking Saskatoon's spirit and effectively ending the game.

Montreal wins their second consecutive CGL championship in convincing fashion!

Hi - thank you so much! I really appreciate feedback - it's been a fun hobby and nice to know people like it!

I stopped using my excel helper and have been using a self-made app to run games. I did quickly throw then into my old template but there will be a few issues:

1) Didn't update play calling charts
2) Some defensive players might be out of alignment based on position
3) Didn't update player roles

PF Changes
Calgary brings in a dedicated QB coach to try to help Tawnia Davis with her development (PF+1)
Saskatoon is seeing a locker room that’s “gelling” after last year’s strong season and hope (PF+1)

Coaching changes
Halifax’s Rick Kimball runs out time – looked for a moment like they would be able to turn the corner with his guidance but another season of regression costs him his job. Halifax turns to brash smash mouth college coach Alpha Bundy and his play action based scheme.


Vancouver (PF5/NC) (5-5)
Vancouver was disappointed by their season but there was more bad news to come in the off-season. WR Eunice Lave got tired of playing “second fiddle” to WR Tommie Kingston and departs for FA, while long time stalwart OL Ron Cornaire departs for retirement.
On defence, they lose perennial all-star Wai-ho Tao and his fellow big body Bert Farrall who tests FA. This team has their work cut out for them in the off-season…

Edmonton Elk (PF5/NC) (5-4-1)
Mixed bag of an off-season for Edmonton. They get better on offence, with OL Marketta Porthen taking her place beside Saskatoon’s Sam Smith as a “perfect” OL – but see regression from Zaire Willis on X-factor and HB Alexandria Humphries loses a step in the pass game.
The main disappointing news is the regression of DB Tyreek Grimes, who will almost certainly be cut after a long and storied career and the shock departure of DB Griffith Herman, who made many big plays for Edmonton over the past 4 seasons.


Calgary Gunslingers (PF5/+1)(4-6)
Pretty even split between steps forward and steps back – most disappointing would be the regression of QB Tawnia Davis. With the off-season hiring of a QB coach, virtually certain Calgary will be looking to fill that spot with a more reliable (or high potential) option.

Toronto Blizzard (PF4)(5-3-2)
Nothing but good news for Toronto’s offense as WRs Walton Sweeney / Roy Neilson and QB Dean Suchanek round into form. Toronto has a tonne of talent on paper and are very young….a team to keep close tabs on.

Ottawa Aces (PF4)(4-6)
League legend Ronnie MacDonald decides to retire after 12 years. Sidelines by Avis Short in year 3, he continued to happily play a supporting role, grinding out tough yards and supporting the team. He was absolutely dominant in the first 2 seasons. On defence, age is starting to catch up with wanderer Alice Hibbs, who will lose some physicality vs the run.
Ottawa will also be disappointed by the regression of QB Dylan Henderson, who’s likely to have played his last game in the CGL.

Montreal Machine (PF5)(9-1)
What happens when the best get even better? The rest of the league will find out, as stars RB Jeremy Folland and DL Mitchell Jones reach peak performance at the same time. Defence will be the question mark as solid run stopping LB Zack Bernier choses FA and young DL Jake Thompson takes a step back that likely puts him out of the league.

Halifax Schooners (PF3/-1)(4-6)
New coach Alpha Bundy has his work cut out for him with this squad as they see rampant regression. He needs a reliable pass catcher to support Mark Harry and the defence is loaded with opportunities to improve…

Saskatoon Storm (PF5 / +1) (5-4-1)
Saskatoon comes into season 5 on a wave of optimism despite a crushing defeat in the S4 CGL championship game. There a sense of camaraderie and hope in the locker room, buoyed by the fact that a lot of the younger contributors on an already strong defence got better. They do have a gap to close on the DL as Ben Brown choses FA.

Regina Raiders (PF4) (5-5)
A strong late season push almost snuck Regina into the playoffs and likely saved them from QB Elroy Dawson choosing to seek a different team. They do lose WR Joey Heaton, who got sick of sharing touches with standout WR Brett Charron. Defensively DB Monty Lamb stepped up as a past defender and veteran DB Mile Hamler might be looking for work after losing a step.

Winnipeg Swarm (PF5) (4-6)
The happiness related to a really strong off-season overall is at least partially dampened by the decision of star DL Aaron Jarrett to leave the team. Jarrett was clear that he knows time is running out on his career and he will only “settle” for a team that has championship aspirations.

Toronto had as close to a perfect off-season as you could imagine, but it's Regina that comes out firing on all cylinders. Regina star OL Thanos Parastadidis was excited to get a chance to scoop a fumble and run for 4 zones in this one, showing the strength and agility that made him a high pick in season 3.

I've been dabbling in Python, on and off, for about three months... far from proficient. Can you recommend a good tutorial. I want to try to create a Gridzone ... its a simple game... should be a basic project. Any tip on how to approach such an app.

I started with a book called "Automate the Boring Stuff with Python" by Al Sweigart. From that I learned how to read and write data at a basic level.

A website called Zetcode was where I started learning about GUI basics.

Then it was tonnes of youtube, books and practice.

I would definitely get to know classes and focus on getting an app through "print" before trying to tackle a GUI - I started with GUI for my first run at Gridzone and it slowed me down so much it stopped being fun.

My structure for the current prototype is:
Coaches - stores team PF, play calling tendencies
Player - stores player data and formats data for writing to database
Teams - team data
Event charts - each of the outcomes from the die rolls has it's own function - got faster as I went as I could share some of the generic ones - but this took longest by far
Database manager - I actually load all the player data from csv files but then stats get output to a SQL database

Then my "main", which ties everything together.

A good problem to have - but realistically, hoping to get this season wrapped up soon and then will have to put it on the shelf for a bit - I'm about halfway through automating off-season but there's no way I'll finish in the near future. Took advantage of a rare day off to get this done - off-season usually takes 3-4 hours and I won't have that time again for a while. Will have to leave this off here for a while - but definitely looking forward to picking it up again.

Will likely plug away at some off-season automation using Python to remove that as a barrier going forward.

Finished automating the biggest chunk of the off-season, which is progression rolls for every player in the league. Probably cut 2 hours off the process.
Managing free agency and setting up the rookie draft will be the next parts to automate.

I'll probably play through the first couple of weeks a bit slower and talk about off-season moves as I go. Two teams increased their "power factors".
Toronto hired ace college coach Chase Anderson to bring his high flying aerial attack to the CGL and Calgary hired some front office help who were perfectly in-sync with HC Jonathon Jesse.

I ran a couple of test sims of the season to make sure my new automation wasn't breaking anything and got some interesting results. Montreal dominated in one but not in the others, so it will be interesting to see what happens in season 6!

Vancouver likely got quite a bit worse in the off-season, with the biggest pain point being the departure of young star LB Chae Daoust who left for Calgary.
They replaced what they lost positionally - but none of the replacements matched what the originals were bringing.

Winnipeg also lost a couple of free agents but in their case the replacements worked out pretty well. The replaced an aging OL with a rookie just as good and then picked up former Toronto standout WR Roy Nielson to compliment Phillipa Pippy and brought in RB Jeremiah Morris from Saskatoon.

An entertaining debut to season 6 as Kevin Frye outduels Leelannee Haynes. Both teams making huge plays in the air in this one. A key interception by WPG DB Griffith Herman was the turning point where WPG turned on the boost.

The 3x champion Montreal Machine will try to reload and take another run at the title in S6, but it won't be without some adversity. Itchy footed DL Aaron Jarrett choses free agency for the 4th time and he was a big part of their last 2 runs. The bigger loss was perennial defensive MVP Thurman Leonhardt who left for Calgary. They were able to replace Leonhardt with up and comer Dixie west, who essentially traded spots with Leonhardt. Montreal also lost long time OL stalwart Margaret Herzog and DB Noah Blood, both replaced by rookies - so it will be a new-look team - but standout RB Jeremy Folland looks ready to run again.

Edmonton appears to be a team on the rise. They made the final last year and they only got better on progression rolls and added the above mentioned DL Aaron Jarrett. Must be confidence inducing for the Elk to get a player who's become known for chasing rings.

Edmonton with a huge statement win as their defence does an admirable job containing Foland. T12 sees 3rd year DL Jake Thompson strip the ball from Foland in his own endzone for a safety and then offence go into ball control mode to win a game that was well played on both sides and a potential preview of another title game matchup!

The Calgary Gunslingers had a mixed bag of an off-season. They lost star LB Dixie West but were able to quickly replace her with perennial all-star Thurman Leonhard AND Chae Daoust from Vancouver, turning the LB position into a major strength. They lost long time OL stalwart Jeremy Russel, but replaced him with promising rookie Craig Boutilier. QB Dashawn Alsbrook looks ready to take another step forward as the coaching staff schemed to put him in situations he's most comfortable in.

Ottawa decided to continue on with their new look offence. First overall pick WR Brad Docherty will be a key contributor but it doesn't seem like Ottawa has done enough to pull themselves back into the hunt.

Thrilling game as newcomer Docherty and RB Avis Short led Ottawa to a 28-0 lead early. Alsbrook started adding on pressure as the game progressed and CGY's revamped defence make a couple of key stops to cue a win in the opener for the Gunslingers.

The Saskatoon Storm had a tumultuous off-season, losing OL stalwart Gordie Borowski to rival Regina. They replace him with a rookie Ze-min Gai, necessitating a shuffle as the rookie is not the pass protector Borowski was. Their big acquisition was WR Walton Sweeney who left as part of the Toronto mass defection. The offence looked to get more explosive on x-factor plays while the defence had a mix of ups and downs.

For Halifax, new coach Alpha Bundy had a great first season, leading Halifax to their first post season ever. WR Tiffani Gauthier takes another step forward, as does DL Ward Legault. They improve on the OL, signing OL Jeremy Russel (2-2-2-7) from CGY. They'll look to repeat their strong performance.

Sweeney and Klassen wasted no time getting acquainted with a bomb on their second play for a long TD. Rookie OL Ze-min Gai shows his athleticism by scooping a fumble and running 6 zones for score, RB Lynda Coleman plays well and the defence harasses Halifax severely all game, resulting in an opening week blowout to embarrass Halifax in front of their own fans!

Complete disaster for Toronto offensively as 4 players take last seasons poor performance so personally they feel compelled to leave and seek a new start. QB Suchanek takes a step back in passing. New coach Chase Anderson was hired to bring offence to Toronto and he’s have a lot of room in which to make his mark. They add WR Dave Maclean from WPG (3-0-1-3) from WPG and add rookie WR Borders with pick #2 to try to show a new look on offence.

Regina was within shouting distance of a playoff game and had a relatively strong season over all. They look to be improved in the run game on offence. The defence looks to have made a leap forward in the run department as well. Their big FA acquisition was signing OL Gordie Borowski (2-2-2-8) from Saskatoon and they add LB Kennie Singleton (0-2-2-0) in the draft.

Super long hiatus, got the bug to look at this again. I bought version 2 yesterday - going to play this a bit and decide whether to update or not. With the long break, the risk of me making a catastrophic mistake is high....but hopefully can finish the season out.

One of the things version 2 fixes is something I ran into in this league, too many high quality FA's. Unfortunately, the "fix" appears to be having a higher portion of them disappear...
