I was wondering what skills are used at a position, in general.

The specific question is that lots of wingers are passable or solid, but their playmaking is weak (or worse). How much is PM counted when playing/purchasing a winger? Does it only count if played "to middle" or always, or never?

Defender: Primary skill- defending
Secondary skill- ???? (i have no clue)
Wingback: Primary skill- defending
Secondary skill- winger (or other way around???)
Midfielder: Primary skill- playmaking
Secondary skill- stamina
Winger: Primary skill- winger
Secondary skill- playmaking
Forward Primary skill- scoring
Secondary skill- passing

Is this about right/fill in the blanks, please.
Also, what, if any, tertiary skill would you look at at a particular position?

I am sure this could help lots of rookies as they come in (FAQ material?).

Thanks

For a winger, the secondary skill would be passing. Playmaking will allow that winger to contribute to midfield. And, given the importance of midfield play in this game, it's why it becomes something to look for and appreciate. But as a 'winger' go, it's passing.

Playmaking counts for winger regardless of instructions. Playing 'toward the middle' just give that winger's playmaking skill a boost at the cost of his winger skill.

Defenders have no secondary skill. But playing them 'offensive' will allow their playmaking to contribute to your midfield play. Supposedly, passing will also have some minor effect on offense next season. I would guess that playing 'offensive' will passing will also give a boost to central attack.

For midfielders, I would say that both stamina and playmaking are considered primary skills. They sort of go together and your midfielder with low stamina will not do well. I would consider passing to be secondary skill there.

Wingback is kind of an interesting one. I'd think which you place first would depend on how you play your wingback. In my case with a 3-5-2, I want the defense so I place the importance on defend. If I was to turn amphibious and go to a 4-5-1, I'd go with winger skill first since I'd need all the offense I can get my hands on.

Hey daedalus, I caught that :)

Seriously, the best site I've found to answer my questions regarding positions, special orders (and their effects on skills), and to explain the pros and cons of the different formations is ABC of Tactics (http://hem.passagen.se/hammervald/abc_of_tactics/abc_of_tactics_index.htm)

In part 2a there, you'll find a section called "The basics of player selection". I think it represents fairly well what goes on regarding player skills and the position they can play...

What's a good day of posting without a few insults to the amphibious amongst us? :D

Heh, heh... :) Just for your information though, I alternate between 4-5-1 and 3-5-2. Got both of them at either solid of excellent, depending which I've just played with... Right now it 3-5-2 in league play because I want to put points on the board, and 4-5-1 in the FOFC cup...

Definitely good idea. I was going to do that as well. In some situations 4-5-1 just definitely works more to your advantage.

here, to finally answer the first question asked, here's the transcript of the table found at the ABC of Tactics site...

Position Most important Second in importance Third in importance
Goalkeeper Keeper
Wing back Defending Winger
Central defender Defending
Offensive central defender Playmaking/stamina Defending
Defensive winger Winger Defending Playmaking/stamina
Normal/offensive winger Winger Playmaking/stamina Passing
Winger towards the middle Playmaking/stamina Winger Passing
Inner midfield
(offensive or defensive) Playmaking/stamina Passing or defending Defending or passing
Inner midfield towards wing Playmaking/stamina Winger Passing/defending
Forward Scoring Passing
Defensive forward Scoring Playmaking/stamina Passing

Not to say this is the absolute truth, but it's what I base most of my decisions on, regarding player/position...
