I'm gonna go back to the 3-5-2. The 4-4-2 experiment has failed me. That being said, I need to buy some midfielders.
I have a Central D who I'm really happy with.
Currently, my starting D looks like this:
Aldrich - Costa - Chance - Braxton
Costa is my anchor (he consistently outplays Chance).
Now, which one of these should I sell:
Greg Aldrich
103 000 US$, 19 years, passable form
Has wretched experience and inadequate leadership abilities [Head]
Stamina: excellent Keeper: disastrous
Playmaking: wretched Passing: poor
Winger: passable Defending: inadequate
Scoring: inadequate Set Pieces: inadequate
Currently, I play Aldrich on the side, and sometimes set him to "Offensive"...
Delmer Chance
121 000 US$, 19 years, solid form
Has wretched experience and weak leadership abilities
Stamina: inadequate Keeper: disastrous
Playmaking: wretched Passing: solid
Winger: wretched Defending: passable
Scoring: wretched Set Pieces: poor
Helllp. should I stick with Aldrich, and keep him on the side in the 3-5-2? Or should I sell Aldrich and put Chance out there?

This is just my opinion as someone who trains defense. Your second guy *may* be able to generate a higher bid because of his form and higher defense/passing skills. The first guy strikes me as more useful because of his Head specialty and scoring/winger/set pieces. I don't know what I would bid on either guy personally because they are both 19. Sorry if that didn't help much.

If you're going 3-5-2, I'm assuming you're going to pull a CD instead of a WB for your extra IM. In that case, you'll want a better WB than CD left, since Costa outplays Chance. Therefore, I think you should keep Aldrich and sell Chance.

Yeah, what both NAIWF and Vince said.
You should be able to get more for Chance because of the passing, especially with the expected change coming up. I don't know if the winger skill actually affect the quality of the wing defense or not. I suspect no so you shouldn't have any problem defensively, if you decide to put him out there. I've played a weak winger out there (albeit, with a "defensive" instruction) with no problem. But it does contribute to your wing attack. You'll pretty much get none from Chance and you'll be paying for the solid passing which you will get nothing from.
Another thing though . . . if you are going to play an inadequate defender out on the wing with an "offensive" instruction, I hope either Costa is insanely good or you have a keeper that can rival the Seamen's Jernigan because that side's wing defense is going to be thin.

I'd keep Aldrich but if you can spare it, try training defending til he pops a level (don't know how long that will be for him). With his passable winger, he should do great on the outside.

I'd keep Aldrich cuz I like the head ability, but if you would rather keep Chance, he'll play fine on the wing with a defensive instruction (I always have to play one wingback who has no winger skill, and it seems to be OK if played defensively)

If Chance is repeatedly being out-played by your other central defender (Costa), then he would be the expendable one. Aldrich looks like he would be a fine wingback, especially with a little more defensive training to get him up to a passable/passable level. Naturally, the Head specialty is a big plus to have on your back line.
Depending on your situation, though, you might consider holding onto Chance as well, and training him if you can. With the upcoming changes regarding defenders and the passing skill, Chance could become more valuable. That solid passing skill could prove quite nice, depending on the level of impact the passing defenders rule change ends up having.

I think I'm going to just ride this season out and keep Chance. The season has been somewhat of a disaster, and I recently sold my top rated mid (Wendell Oneal) because he was playing so bad, and had some nice value (I can't believe someone actually paid nearly his full value, either)...I'm at about 200k debt now, but should be out soon, as I expanded to 18 000 seats and have 3 of my next 4 league games @ home :)
Ahhhh building for next season...
One more question, here are my goalies:
Jim Browning
160 000 US$, 29 years, passable form
Has disastrous experience and weak leadership abilities [Unpredictable]
Stamina: poor Keeper: passable
Playmaking: disastrous Passing: wretched
Winger: wretched Defending: disastrous
Scoring: disastrous Set Pieces: passable
and
Ardo Põlluste
72 000 US$, 21 years, inadequate form
Has disastrous experience and inadequate leadership abilities
Stamina: weak Keeper: inadequate
Playmaking: disastrous Passing: disastrous
Winger: disastrous Defending: disastrous
Scoring: disastrous Set Pieces: poor
Think I should sell one? Or should I keep a decent backup? Anyone have a goalie injury before?
Oh yeh, Data, here is Costa:
Alexandre Figueiredo Costa
49 000 US$, 19 years, excellent form
Has disastrous experience and inadequate leadership abilities [Unpredictable]
Stamina: solid Keeper: disastrous
Playmaking: wretched Passing: weak
Winger: poor Defending: passable
Scoring: poor Set Pieces: weak
If you look at the game logs, he's the second-lowest valued D of them...and he's usually the best...pretty much every game he plays he's my POM. Weird @ that value.

None of my keepers have ever sustained a significant injury, but I've seen it happen to others. When that happens, it's nice to either have a backup on hand, or the cash available to purchase one. Personally, I prefer to have two keepers on the roster. That way, your primary keeper only has to play one match per week, halving his chance of getting injured.
Browning is obviously the better keeper. Keepers are supposed to be the slowest to lose their ability after age 27, so his age isn't really a concern in that respect. But if he were to get injured, it would take him a while to heal, so having a backup on hand seems like a good idea to me. Also, I don't think the sale of Ardo would bring in enough money to make it worthwhile (10k?). To be honest, I have no idea what inadequate keepers are going for these days.
As far as Chance goes, it looks to me like the solid passing skill is seriously skewing his assessed value, explaining the big difference between him and Costa. I also notice the Costa is in excellent form. Does he tend to be in good form (solid/excellent)? I've found that players with such good base form are quite valuable to a team, a lot moreso than their assessed value might indicate.

I had one of my keeper trainees get a +5, so it can happen. Oh yeah, and the keeper I sold to clear my debt got injured for +6 or so the first time he played for his new team.

My clown always plays. He is a passable scorer I pulled at the start of the season.

Yeh, he's awesome :) I'll hold onto chance and hope things turn around

Delmer Chance

Stamina: inadequate Keeper: disastrous
Playmaking: wretched Passing: solid
Winger: wretched Defending: solid
Scoring: wretched Set Pieces: poor

Update - I sold Delmer Chance this week, as his value had slipped $36k in the last few weeks (peaked at 128k, now at 92k), and his form had gone from solid to weak.
Date Type Players To/From Price Value then
8/24/2003 Sold Delmer Chance to Sparrows 161 000 US$ (92 000 US$)
:)
Now I'm almost 100k in the black...time to buy a 300k midfielder!!! :)
