View Full Version : TCY Kentucky 2004: Cloud of Dust

In searching for a very tough TCY challenge, I tried to pick a team that met this criteria...
1) Low intitial Academic Prestige
2) Low initial Team Prestige
3) In a tough conference.
4) From a somewhat small state, to make recruiting more difficult.
5) Hasn't been used in too many other dynasties.
I settled on Kentucky. They seemed to fit this criteria the best. On top of that, here are the additional rules I set...
1) I can only recruit players from Kentucky, West Virginia, and Tennessee. This can be expanded in several ways:
Any small state (single digit electoral votes) can be added if I have a winning season.
Another small state can be added if I beat Louisville.
A medium state (10-19 electoral votes) can be added with a bowl victory or an appearance in the SEC championship.
An elite state (20+ electoral votes) can be added with a victory in a million dollar payout bowl or a conference championship.
I will add states that are closest to me and spread out from there.
2) I can only recruit players that have an SAT score of 1000. The only exception is a player that idolizes my school.
3) I can only visit/call a player once per week.
4) I can only make one staff change per season (unless more than one person retires of course.)
5) Time Management: I can't simply set everyone to 50 study the first couple years to increase the academic reputation. There is a limit of 30 for scholarship players and 35 for walk-ons.
6) And the most important challenge of all: No passing. I cannot gameplan a single pass play. We will run, run, run. I will set 100% for all running situations. Since I know passes will still be called from time to time, I will also set my passing distances to 100% for screen passes. If you're gonna throw it bitch, it will be behind the line of scrimmage.
Other settings:
Difficulty: All-Star
Hire/Fire Coaches: Yes
Include Suspensions: Yes
Use Bowl System: Yes
Random Reputations: No
Solecismic 8: Montana (Using a Montana school list that I love)
I have no idea how this dynasty will turn out. I fully expect to get creamed and eventually fired. But it should be excruciating fun!

I meet my initial staff...
Offensive Coordinator: Donald Crichlow
Play Calling: Lousy
Injury Avoidance: Terrific
Rehabilitation: Very Good
Congeniality: Very Good
QB: Very Good
RB: Poor
WR/TE: Terrible
OL: Excellent
K: Very Good
Current Offense: Single Back Offense
Years with Offense: 5 Years
I have to keep this fool this year, but after that I expect to throw this sissy single back idiot out of Kentucky. Meanwhile, he better study up on how to call the Power I.
Defensive Coordinator: Irv Foley
Play Calling: Lousy
Injury Avoidance: Lousy
Rehabilitation: Poor
Congeniality: Poor
DL: Very Good
LB: Decent
DB: Pretty Good
Another useless coach. Will be history first chance I get with my house rules.
Syndicate Coordinator: Donnie Vaughn
Academic Eligibility: Pretty Good
Syndicate Investigation: Excellent
Solicit Funds: Terrible
This guy will do for now. Nobody will want to solicit funds if we don't win games anyways.
Scout (Southeast): Lawrence Farrell
QB: Fair
RB: Fair
WR/TE: Excellent
OL: Decent
K: Fair
DL: Pretty Good
LB: Terrible
DB: Good
I have some other scouts on the staff, but I'm not sure why. Gonna be a boring season for them.

We start off ranked 60th, but I figure to finish much worse than that. Louisville only starts at 58th. Stealing a win from them would be very helpful for recruiting purposes.

I just realized that I can only set run %'s as high as 99, so there may be a few more passes than I want. Thankfully I can still set screen passes to 100%.

Week 2: Kentucky at Louisville
We're able to put together a nice drive early in the 1st, but it stalsl on a failed 4th down conversion at the Louisville 29. My "island" defense is going very well, as Louisville can't get any offensive momentum and suffer an INT and two fumbles early on. The 2nd fumble is costly.

We get the ball at the Louisville 42. We drive to the Louisville 25 and only 4th and 5, we go for the FG this time. Louisville gets penalized for running into the kicker, giving us a 1st down. Two plays later MArsh runs for 15 yards, setting up a 2 yard TD run by Kulik and amazingly we have a 7-0 lead! This lead does not last long, as Louisvilel returns the kickoff to our 43 yard line. Three pass plays later, it is suddenly tied 7-7, where the score stays until halftime.
Both teams trade 3 and outs for most of the 3rd quarter. I'm really proud of my defensive performance. Louisville eventually gets a drive going near the end of the quarter, getting down to 8 yard line after a 29 yard reverse play. However, on the very next play, Burke intercepts a pass at our 2 yard line. Backed, we put together an admirable drive, taking 7:23 off the clock while taking it to our 47 yard line. Several more 3 and outs, until a big sequence takes place with only 1:36 left in the game. We get the ball at midfield and on 3rd and 2, the idiot QB attempts a pass which falls incomplete. We decide to punt, but Louisville has one more mistake to make. Their return man fumbles the punt and we recover at the Louisville 23. We are unable to pick up a 1st down, but Hamilton hits a 35 yard FG to give us a 10-7 lead with only 29 seconds left. There's still a scare as Louisville makes a great return and completes a 39 yard pass to get into FG range. However, they miss the 41 yard FG and we walk away with the 10-7 victory.
What a terrific start! I've already achieved something as I can add a state to recruit from next season. While Louisville made a ton of mistakes, I'm still extremely pleased with how my defense played. I was very fortunate to get two competent CB's to start the dynasty,
Not sure how far you are, but if you're looking for a challenge, I'd suggest evening out your offense. As is, you're not really required to recruit receivers and to a lesser extent, quarterbacks. You can be very one dimensional with linemen and tight ends as well.
One of the reasons I like the double wing is for those very reasons. However, if you're looking for more a challenge, you might try throwing the ball some...so that you have to at least consider receivers and quarterbacks who can throw.
Just a suggestion.

Actually I've done very well with the Double Wing, even getting a QB to throw for 2,500 yards in it. While I will be able to ignore receivers and throwing QB's, I think the other challenges, (having to run on 3rd and 10+, limited recruiting) make it enough of a challenge as it is.

Week 4: Indiana at Kentucky
Our running offense is pretty sharp at the start. We don't get on the board in the 1st quarter, but completely control time of possession and field position. It finally pays off int he 2nd quarter, whena 10 play drive from midfield results in a 33 yard FG and a 3-0 lead. Unfortunately, Indiana comes right back down the field and answers with their own 25 yard FG to tie it up right before halftime.
Three plays into the 2nd half, we intercept an Indiana pass at their 27 yard line. After picking up a first down, we kick another FG to go up 6-3. Indiana's offense goes nowhere, with several 3 and outs to close the 3rd quarter. Early in the 4th, another INT sets us up at midfield. We pick up a couple first downs, chew up 5 more minutes of the clock and kick another FG to go up 9-3. Once again, Indiana goes three and out. This time Harris returns the punt to the Hoosier 13 yard line. Two penalties back us up and we face 1st and 32 from the 35 yard line. However, Bolock pitches to WIlliams on an option play and he streaks down the sideline for a 35 yard TD to give us a 15-3 lead (after the failed conversion) with 6:03 left in the game. Indiana's offense is still inept and they never threaten, We add another FG for an 18-3 victory!
Suddenly we are 2-0 and our defense looks like one of the best int he nation. However, I realize this will all change as we start the SEC schedule. I'm still thinking a 4-7 or 5-6 record is our best bet, but it sure is a fun start.

The Game
Kentucky at Florida
Things look good when we intercept Florida's first pass of the game. Then Florida fumbles a punt and we take a 3-0 lead early int he 1st quarter. However, our island defense just can't match up with Florida's fast receivers. a TD pass puts the Gators up 7-3 late int he 1st. The Gators would get two more TD passes and a TD run int he 2nd quarter, and the rout was on. Our only TD would come on a 67 yard TD run by backup QB Bert Linquist. Meanwhile, Florida QB Jessie Sutter would throw 6 TD's, although we did manage to pick him off 3 times. The final score was 56-10.

Week 6
Injuries
RB Troy McCreary suffers ACL damage to the knee and will be out for 40 weeks. He only had one attempt in our first three games.
Recruiting
Kerry Raumaker, an inside linebacker, has decided not to accept your offer and will attend North Carolina next season.
Gary Gredzinski, an inside linebacker, has decided not to accept your offer and will attend Florida next season.
The Game
Ohio at Kentucky
We go to 3-1 by completely dominating Ohio. Our offense was at it's best, taking up more than 40 minutes of the clock and putting up 363 yards on the ground. On defense, we only allowed 5 total yards rushing. Ohio did manage a couple big pass plays against our island defense but we made up for that by picking off two of them and sacking their QB three times. When it was all over, we had won by a 41-9 score.
A 3-1 start is great, but now we hit the real meat of our schedule. Alabama, South Carolina, Auburn, Miss State, Georgia, Vandy, and Tennessee. We have to win three of those games to become bowl eligible, which will be very tough.

Week 7
Injuries
Backup CB Stephen Weaver is out for 20 Weeks due to a torn knee ligament. He is not an important player.
Recruiting
Marlon Jenkins, a defensive tackle, has decided not to accept your offer and will attend Northwestern next season.
I still have no recruits. This is going to be an ugly recruiting class.
The Game
We were dominated in this game, but kept the score close due to numerous Alabama miscues. After the Tide went up 3-0 in the 1st quarter, we took advantage of a fumble and hit a 41 yard FG to tie it at 3-3 in the 2nd. Alabama's offense kept putting drives together, but the defense admirably kept them out of the end zone and the Tide could only manage one more FG by half time to go up 6-3. Alabama added another FG early in the 3rd quarter and probably would have started to blow us out, but we stopped them on 4th down and intercepted them three more times to keep it close. The back breaking play was when my idiot QB decided to THROW A PASS. Of course it got intercepted and Alabama scored a TD on the next play to go up 15-3. We could not threaten for the rest of the game.
Not a bad effort from my guys. Alabama was ranked #6 coming in to this game and we kept it alot closer than I expected.

Very cool Larry, you are Lexington's Anti-Hal Mumme. :)
Very encouraging results thus far.. How does your Defense create so many turnovers.. WOW!!
Hopefully you can take the games at MSU and at home v. Vandy. That will leave you one win short of a Bowl... A upset in Lexington over USC or UGA is all you need then.
A Bowl at UK is quite an accomplishment.
Good Luck!

Very encouraging results thus far.. How does your Defense create so many turnovers.. WOW!!
I run a Man-to-Man or Bump and Run 75% of the time, have 0% double coverage and line up my corners by WR coverage instead of side of the formation. This frees up the rest of the team to stop the run or pick off passes over the middle.

Week 8
Injuries
The Alabama game was pretty brutal to us. We lost starting Safety Conrad Webb for the season. He had 2 INT's so far. Starting DT Lamar Wynn is listed as Doubtful for 4 Weeks. Also hurting are QB Bert Linquist and DE Carlton Mills.
Recruiting
Finally some good news on the recruiting front:
Rico Grant, a cornerback from Shelby County High School in Shelbyville, Kentucky, has accepted your invitation to play for your school next season.
Ty Garner, a quarterback from Paducah Tilghman High School in Paducah, Kentucky, has accepted your invitation to play for your school next season.
Grant is the #364 recruit in the nation, and CB is one of our most important positions given the defense I run. Garner is the # 827 recruit in the nation. He's not a promising passer, but has good rushing stats.
The Game
Kentucky at South Carolina
As Myles pointed out, this is a crucial game for our bowl chances. Unfortunately, there's not much to report here. Our defense created turnovers once again, but South Carolina still moved the ball well enough, while we couldn't do anything against them. We kept it close early on (3-2 at the half) by recording a safety, forcing two fumbles and picking off two passes, but South Carolina began to pull away in the 2nd half. Despite my gameplan settings, our QB's threw 26 times and were not very successful. We suffered a 24-2 defeat.
