WR LANG LEAVES UAB

WR Matt Lang suffered a degenerative hip condition and has to leave the UAB Blazer program before his eligibility is up. It's unfortunate for the guy. But in football terms, the loss only hurts our depth at WR. Ben Patton has established himself as the guy to go to when we pass (him and TE Dean Snyder).

THE BEAVERS WANT ME

Oregon State, for the second straight year, is trying to get me to go out west. But I'm not moving yet, at least not until the Koehler/McLemore era is over.

Unfortunately, there weren't many good replacement candidates out there that were willing to come to UAB, so we're stuck with our defensive coordinator for another year. He should consider this a second chance.

Let's break down the rosters.
McLemore, Kim 10 QB So 32 73
Weaver, Seth 14 QB Jr* 24 66
Raphael, Charles 11 QB Sr* 19 45
Cox, Deron 18 QB Sr 17 17
Hurnblad, Dixon 19 QB Fr 12 85
McLemore will return as starter, while Weaver will remain the backup. Hurnblad will redshirt, but he'll be good in the future.

Castillo, Alvin 33 RB So* 64 80
Koehler, Juan 44 RB Sr* 56 90
Razo, Mercury 39 RB Sr* 49 61
Kemp, Cole 28 RB Jr* 23 70
Barrows, Tyrell 36 FB Jr* 49 49
Fox, Edgar 31 FB* Sr* 9 18
Koehler will still be our number one RB. However, it is possible that he gets less carries this year, as Alvin Castillo is a real threat. We're going to utilize both our starting tailbacks a lot. In any case, the Thunder and Lightning era is over. It'll be the Castillo and Lightning era from now on.

Barrows at FB is a no-brainer. We'll definitely be recruiting a FB this year.

Snyder, Dean 86 TE Sr 70 100
Clark, Tom 83 TE So* 42 43
Cook, Al 89 TE Fr 22 70
Dunn, Arnold 84 TE Jr 18 42
Harrison, Earnest 88 TE* Sr 13 13
Patton, Ben 6 WR Jr* 30 66
Reyes, Phillip 85 WR So 24 52
Cofield, Phillip 87 WR Sr 16 32
Shelton, Matt 9 WR* Sr* 5 5
Snyder returns at TE (hopefully without injury), while Patton will be the starter at WR.

So far, so good on offense. :)

Peachey, Dale 56 C Sr 57 67
Henson, Donovan 57 C Jr* 23 71
Carlisle, Ty 69 G Sr* 34 74
Lerner, Everett 70 G Sr 26 42
Bullock, Trevor 75 G Jr* 21 29
Hutton, Derrick 65 G Fr 21 84
Pirtle, Dominic 63 G So* 17 58
Perlman, Jackie 78 G Sr* 16 38
Pietraszak, Grant 74 T Jr* 56 72
Downs, Colin 66 T Sr* 43 56
Osburn, Jim 61 T Sr* 17 18
Westbrook, Bryce 73 T Fr 17 72
Evans, Kendrick 68 T So* 12 40
Coates, Marlon 67 T Sr 10 10
At C, Peachey returns for his last year here. At G, it'll be Carlisle on the left and true freshman Hutton on the right. This will be the weaker part of the O-line at first, but look for these two guys to improve a lot. At T, it'll be Pietraszak on the left and Downs on the right.

Harper, Eddie 17 P Sr 44 44
Finley, Bernard 2 P Jr* 33 64
Douglas, Allen 13 P* Fr 10 10
Garrison, Jake 4 K Sr* 33 86
Harper, Jose 15 K* So 4 48
Windsor, Van 7 K* So* 0 20
Harper will be the new punter and Garrison will keep his job at kicker.

The offense looks improved! Of course, I'm sticking with the Wishbone. I'm beginning to think we can succeed with that formation here.

Now for the defense (which will be in a 4-3 formation again):
Davila, Michael 92 DE Sr 49 54
Riffle, Les 76 DE So 37 67
Harms, Howie 98 DE Sr 31 32
Brady, Ralph 97 DE Fr 22 55
Ornelas, Broderick 90 DE Jr* 16 30
Norton, Jeremy 50 DE* Jr 6 6
Welch, Rod 91 DT Sr* 43 78
Ponder, Devin 72 DT So* 28 77
Desmond, Deron 60 DT Jr* 20 32
Stowe, Dominic 99 DT Sr 17 26
Kindred, Rico 96 DT Fr 16 89
Salvatori, Brady 79 DT Jr* 15 52
Riffle and Davila will be the starting DEs, while at DT it'll be Welch and new starter Devin Ponder.

Guthrie, Lincoln 53 ILB Sr* 18 40
McCrory, Gerald 95 ILB Sr 15 47
Franz, J.T. 40 ILB So 14 18
Cohen, Leo 52 ILB Fr 12 45
Bertsch, Derrick 47 ILB* Jr 8 23
Barnes, Bubba 41 ILB* Jr 5 5
Schroeder, Leon 55 OLB Jr* 48 80
Roosenraad, Kurt 58 OLB Sr* 38 38
Stubbs, Al 54 OLB Jr* 32 50
Palma, Vinny 93 OLB Fr 18 76
Rutherford, Derrick 51 OLB So* 13 63
May, Darnell 49 OLB* Sr 6 6
Sims, Floyd 59 OLB* Jr* 6 6
It'll be Schroeder and Roosenraad on the outside (Palma will redshirt), while on the inside Guthrie will start over injury-prone McCrory. Cohen was disappointing this spring.

Roberson, Bart 48 CB Sr 76 76
Owens, Blaine 42 CB So 44 83
Costello, Byron 45 CB Sr* 33 41
Durham, Bobby 37 CB Jr 24 29
Smothers, Todd 22 CB Fr 7 49
Halbert, Andrew 25 CB* So 10 25
Gambrell, Emmanuel 38 CB* So 2 2
Springer, Brenden 34 S Sr 61 83
Caban, Warren 29 S Sr* 28 58
Blake, Edward 27 S So* 26 66
Jaster, Don 30 S Fr 25 68
Tavares, Heath 24 S Jr* 21 48
Dole, Jose 35 S Sr 18 42
Schwarzhaupt, Greg 23 S Fr 16 53
Oh, I was right the first time... Roberson returns. It'll be him and Owens at CB. At S, All-Everything Brenden Springer returns, along with Caban.

We still have a hole in the middle of our defense (ILB) - that worries me. Hopefully Guthrie will improve quickly, and hopefully Cohen will add something in 2010.

NOLAN: First, the non-conference games. Fairbanks comes back to Alabama for the 2nd straight year. UAB should be much improved from that debacle against them last year.

FORBES: Hopefully.

NOLAN: The Arkansas State match should be a win as well, but of course, there's the Buckeyes...

FORBES: As much as I would love to see an upset there, it ain't happening... not in Columbus. This OSU team is stacked.

NOLAN: Now for the C-USA slate... the Blazers play all the heavyweights: Louisville, TCU, Tulane and East Carolina.

FORBES: They beat Tulane and ECU last year, but not Louisville, and they didn't play TCU. I'd say they lose 2 of those.

NOLAN: I agree. As for the rest, they should be able to beat Army and Houston. USF gives the Blazers trouble sometimes...

FORBES: They should be able to beat the Bulls again... that team is down. And for Memphis, that game is always tough, but the Blazers should come out on top as well.

NOLAN: So we're looking at an 8-3 year, 6-2 in conference. Will that be good enough for the conference title?

FORBES: Depends on how well Louisville, TCU and/or Tulane do.

NOLAN: Let's look at the coaches predictions for C-USA:
Tulane 0-0 USA 34 44 39.00 37
TCU 0-0 USA 36 31 33.50 34
Louisville 0-0 USA 46 73 59.50 52
East Carolina 0-0 USA 54 75 64.50 61
**UAB 0-0 USA 65 82 73.50 68
South Florida 0-0 USA 78 80 79.00 78
Houston 0-0 USA 84 104 94.00 90
Memphis 0-0 USA 98 93 95.50 98
Southern Miss 0-0 USA 104 99 101.50 105
Cincinnati 0-0 USA 108 84 96.00 104
Army 0-0 USA 118 112 115.00 119
NOLAN: UAB is 5th... wow, no respect, even though, talentwise, UAB is at least as good as last year.

FORBES: I can see putting us behind Louisville and TCU. And Tulane will be good. But still... at least 3rd.

NOLAN: I think coaches believe that the close games will start to go against the Blazers this year.

FORBES: Let's hope not... let's hope for a good year...

Texas Tech 20, South Florida 17
Tulane 14, Temple 3

RECRUITING
Same rules apply:
*Due to our conference championship last year, our recruiting radius has been extended to 500 miles. This takes us into Texas, Ohio, Indiana, Virginia, and deep into Florida.
*A winning season brings us an additional 50 mi. A conference title: +100 miles. An unlikely national title: +200 mi.
*Only those players with over a 1000 SAT score are recruited.

This year, we're going after these positions: RB, FB, WR, C, G, T, DT, ILB, CB, S, K (walk-on).

THE BEAVERS WANT ME

Oregon State, for the second straight year, is trying to get me to go out west. But I'm not moving yet, at least not until the Koehler/McLemore era is over.

If my vote counts, I vote that you just stick with the Blazers and lead them to a National Title. :D

Convert an OLB to ILB?

I like the way your team is looking. Biggest needs look like FB, ILB and CB. I have noticed that some of your senior players look underdeveloped, might want to look for players with better Athletic Prep if you can.

Yep, your vote certainly does. If I can win a national title with UAB, that would be awesome.

Thanks for the advice. You're right - I've certainly neglected Athletic Prep... I'll be paying closer attention to that from now on.

And I've been thinking about taking true freshman Vinny Palma and moving him to ILB and removing his redshirt. We have plenty of good prospective OLBs in this year's recruiting ranks, but no ILBs (like usual). Anyway, I'll have to do that after the first game (already simmed).

UAB 31, Fairbanks 0

BIRMINGHAM - A UAB-record 44,000 fans showed up at Legion Field to see what could be called "The Kim McLemore Show." The sophomore QB became the first Blazer QB to rush for 100 yards (he had 109 total), and he also threw for 279 yards, breaking the previous passing record set by himself, as UAB (1-0) slaughtered Fairbanks (0-2).

"Everything just clicked for me today," McLemore said after the game.

WR Ben Patton had 3 catches for 91 yards. However, the lone TD pass of the game went to RB Juan Koehler, who had a miserable day, by his standards. He had only 3 carries and 24 yards rushing, both career lows. Meanwhile, UAB's much-hyped freshman RB, Alvin Castillo, had only 3 yards on 3 carries.

This begs the question, did McLemore carry the ball himself so much because he was on his game, or because Koehler and Castillo were very much off of theirs? Some are wondering if there's something wrong with Koehler, who usually shines against weak teams like Fairbanks.

Despite the McLemore display, it would be unfair to say that he won the game singlehandedly. UAB's oft-criticized defense answered cynics by shutting out a team for the first time under the B.B. Gunn era.

COLUMBUS, OH - RB Alvin Castillo had his coming out party, rushing for over 100 yards, but QB Kim McLemore had a terrible day, throwing for 4 picks, as UAB (1-1) went down in Columbus to the Buckeyes (2-1).

Shocking a lot of people, UAB made this game a true contest, holding the lead twice, once in the 2nd quarter and once in the 3rd. But in the end, McLemore's mistakes cost UAB.

"I think he put too much pressure on himself," said FB Tyrell Barrows. "He was trying to live up to what he did in the Fairbanks game. He just needs to relax and be Kim."

Coach B.B. Gunn was nevertheless pleased with the effort. "To come to the horseshoe and keep it competitive like we did, and not get blown out... that shows where we are now. This team is a good team, and they showed it today. We're not on the level of an Ohio State, but as you can see, we're close."

BIRMINGHAM - UAB overcame a horrible 1st quarter to rally and get the victory here at Legion Field.

Arkansas State (0-3) would take a 14-0 lead by the last minute of the 1st quarter. The next 50 seconds would be wacky, as on the next kickoff, Bart Roberson fumbled as he was being tackled on the kickoff return. ASU took it into the end zone for a 21-0 lead.

On UAB's next valid play after that, QB Kim McLemore threw an interception that was returned for a TD. Like that, UAB was down 28-0.

Amazingly, UAB (2-1) didn't let that get them down, as they went ahead and dominated the next 3 quarters. They finally took the lead in the 4th quarter, when Jake Garrison's field goal kick made it 29-28. ASU would regain the lead later, 31-29. Then with less than 2 minutes remaining, FB Tyrell Barrows ran in the winning TD.

"This team blows my mind," said TE Dean Snyder, the Game MVP. "We didn't give up after being down 28-0, and we ended up winning. Amazing."

LOUISVILLE - In front of a regional TV audience, UAB (3-1) avenged the only C-USA loss they had last year by defeating the Cardinals (2-2) in Louisville.

UAB held the lead for most of this one, but it was a close match for a while. Louisville had more yards by far in this one, thanks to a 465-yard passing performance. What eventually did Louisville in were the penalties and turnovers that they had.

Juan Koehler was the Game MVP. "Lightning" is quickly making people forget about his horrible Fairbanks game.

Meanwhile, people heard a bit of "Thunder" today, as Mercury Razo made his first 2009 start, replacing Alvin Castillo. The RB has 22 yards rushing and a TD, while also receiving for 22 yards and a TD. Castillo, in his first game as starting FB, did not have a carry.

BIRMINGHAM - UAB won its third straight game, defeating the Green Wave (4-2) in a game devoid of any offense.

The Blazers (4-1) won the game by going to the air, passing for more yardage than Tulane, a team better suited to taking to the air.

51,500 fans attended the game at Legion Field, breaking the previous record set earlier this year against Fairbanks. Looks like the Wishbone is beginning to make noise in Birmingham.

WEEK 8 - PREVIEW
Army (2-2) at UAB (4-1)(-15) - TV4
This is a game for first place in the conference? UAB will take it. Army is 2-0 in C-USA, including a surprising win over TCU last week. They've had to win by defense; their run-and-shoot offense has been terrible. They're good at limiting rushes by opposing teams - not a good sign for UAB.

BIRMINGHAM - Juan Koehler had another big game with 178 yards and a TD, and the Blazers came from behind in the 2nd half to defeat Army 27-21 to take sole possession of first place in C-USA.

QB Kim McLemore, who had trouble running the offense early on, let his emotions get the best of him. He shot the finger at UAB fans who were booing his performance, earning McLemore an ejection. Backup QB Seth Weaver came in and did a good job, playing an important role in UAB's (5-1) second half comeback.

UAB 27, South Florida 6

TAMPA - In a place where UAB often has trouble playing, they didn't have much trouble today. UAB (6-1) won its 11th straight conference game as they dominated USF (1-5).

The win was perhaps the first "true" Thunder-and-Lightning game. Star tailback Juan Koehler had a monster day: 188 yards and 2 TDs. Meanwhile, Mercury Razo had 52 yards and a rushing TD. QB Kim McLemore, in his first game since being ejected against Army, went 11-16 for 123 yards and didn't throw a pick.

UAB is now bowl eligible for the second straight year. They have a big test coming up against East Carolina next week in Birmingham.

WEEK 11 - PREVIEW
UAB (7-1) at TCU(5-2)(-3) - TV4
The biggest game of the C-USA season to date. The winner will have the inside track to the conference title. TCU's rushing attack has looked good recently, and figures to give UAB a hard time. However, UAB is the Horned Frogs' toughest opponent on its schedule. The same can be said about TCU for UAB as well. This will be a good game.

FORT WORTH - TCU re-established themselves as C-USA's top dogs with a thorough whipping of the UAB Blazers (7-2). TCU (6-2) now sits in a first-place tie with UAB, with this game, of course, serving as any tiebreaker.

UAB's 12-game conference winning streak came to a halt, as did their overall 6-game winning streak. UAB also lost a chance to enter the Top 25 for the first time.

BIRMINGHAM - UAB dominated the clock with great running by star RB Juan Koehler as the Blazers (9-2) knocked off their rivals Memphis (3-8) in C-USA action. However, the celebration was short-lived, as TCU eliminated the Blazers from title contention with a big win at Louisville.

"It's sad," said UAB coach B.B. Gunn, who has coached the Blazers to their best season ever, "but what can you do. We lost to TCU. We had a chance to wrap up the conference, and we didn't, and we're paying for that."

The C-USA title will go to either TCU or Tulane. The two teams don't play each other this year, so the conference champ will be determined after Tulane's game against East Carolina next week. Meanwhile, UAB hopes for a bowl berth in two weeks.

PREVIEW - MAUI BOWL

UAB (9-2) vs UTEP (9-2)(-7) - TV2

UAB goes bowling for the second straight season as they travel to Hawaii to face WAC champions UTEP in a game that will be on national TV in the first week of bowls.

The Miners run a balanced offense that tends to favor the run, something that might spell trouble for UAB. UTEP won the conference by beating highly-ranked Fresno State and San Jose State, one reason why the Miners are favored in this contest.

MAUI BOWL GAME LOG
Since I'm sick at home today, I'll be doing this game in a running commentary format, for your viewing pleasure. And here we go!

Welcome to the Maui Bowl in beautiful Wailuku. UAB takes the kickoff first. McLemore puts together a good first drive, complete with several good option runs in tandem with Juan Koehler, and finishes the drive with a 9-yard TD pass to Koehler. After about 7 minutes, its UAB 7, UTEP 0.

Then UTEP puts together a good, balanced drive of its own, and ties the score with 3:57 remaining in the first quarter. UAB 7, UTEP 7. They just announced the attendance. Only 15,600 people are in attendance here in Wailuku. Too bad... they're missing a good game here.

After a UAB drive that was killed by terrible penalties, UTEP makes its way down the field again for another TD. At 11:59 in the 2nd quarter, it's UTEP 14, UAB 7. Their QB, Ameche, already has 105 yards passing on us.

We go 3-and-out on the next drive, then UTEP once again makes its way into the red zone. This time, our defense prevents them from getting into the end zone, and they settle for a field goal. UTEP 17, UAB 7.

We have yet ANOTHER drive killed by horrible penalties. Something must be done about all the penalties we have accumulated this year. Anyway, we punt, and what do you know, UTEP drives down the field for another score. UTEP 24, UAB 7. 4:45 left before halftime.

Finally, we get another decent drive going. But with 4th-and-10, and 1:30 on the clock, the OC decides to go for it!!! McLemore is sacked for a loss of 8 yards, and the ball is turned over on downs. This game is not going well for us. Just TWO plays later, thanks to a big 50-yard pass to set up a 9-yard TD run, UTEP is up 31-7 with less than a minute remaining. We can't do anything on the ensuing drive, and we go into the locker room with our heads down.

HALFTIME: UTEP 31, UAB 7.

I give one of my usual low-key but forceful halftime speeches. McLemore was pressured into making bad throws all throughout the first half. I tell him to calm down and just run the wishbone like we usually do. I also tell the D that it's up to them to hold UTEP to 31 in order for us to win.

UTEP takes the kick. On the first play from scrimmage after that, ILB Vinny Palma comes up with a HUGE interception for us. We take the ball on the UTEP 47. However, two plays later, McLemore attempts to throw it into the end zone from the UTEP 39. It's picked off by the Miners in the end zone. Damn... We make up for it, though, as the defense comes up with a drive stop and forces the Miners to punt for the first time in the game. A few plays later, McLemore connects with Koehler on a big 56-yard pass that takes us to the UTEP 8. Koehler dazzled, gaining 35 yards after the catch. But two plays later, McLemore fumbles the ball as he is sacked, and UTEP recovers at their own 10. DAMN...

UTEP drives down the field, and the UAB defense comes up with a BIG stop just short of the red zone. UTEP turns the ball over on downs. However, their RB Stewart is having a big day against us. 90 yards rushing so far...

On the next drive, McLemore gets another big connection to Koehler out of the backfield, this one for 34 yards. At this point, we have 202 yards passing, and only 78 yards rushing. Meanwhile, UTEP has 165 yards rushing, and 226 yards passing. No wonder we're losing.

3:15 left in the 3rd quarter now. We still have the ball... But then McLemore throws 3 straight incompletions, and we have to punt. The story of the game... The defense does its job, though, as they stop UTEP and force them to punt as well. McLemore then throws 3 more incompletions. Garrison attempts a 54-yard FG, but it just misses the crossbar. DAMN...

After another big stop, we get the ball back. McLemore connects with RB Mercury Razo for 32 yards. As we head into the 4th quarter, however, we lose momentum when McLemore is sacked. Garrison tries a 56-yarder this time, and this time he makes it! UTEP 31, UAB 10.

13:17 left in the game... UTEP fails to get a first down, and they punt. The defense is doing what I told them to do at the half. UTEP hasn't sniffed a point yet in the 2nd half. Now if only the offense can do something...

McLemore makes a big 31-yard pass play to TE Clark, taking us into UTEP territory. Then, again, McLemore throws 3 straight incompletions. Garrison then misses another 54-yarder. UTEP takes the ball. UTEP gets into the red zone, but the Blazers come up with a stop. Their kicker makes a 27-yarder. UTEP 34, UAB 10. 6:23 left in the game... Looks like it's over for us.

McLemore, after getting into trouble early, connects with Clark on a 42-yard pass, but then throws a pick on the next play, sealing the loss for us... that is, if it wasn't already sealed.

After an insurance TD by the Miners, Seth Weaver comes in for mop-up duty, but can't get any points.

FINAL: UTEP 41, UAB 10

You could say that the loss of TE Snyder will hurt, but he was oft injured and never reached his true potential. With his concussion syndrome, it's a shame to see such NFL talent wasted.

We lose the anchor of our OL, C Peachey, and we lose a LOT of key starters on defense: sackmaster Davila, Harms, Roberson, Springer, and McCrory. The OL and the secondary will be fine, but our DL takes a hit.

Anyway, so long guys.

Except at ILB, we recruited well to replace our losses. Devore and Burroughs will more than make up for the losses of Roberson and Springer. Meanwhile, with a redshirt season to get ready, McCormick should step in nicely when Koehler graduates next year. Welcome aboard, guys.

We took a step forward. Improving from 7-5 to 9-3 helps our prestige. But it would've been nice to win the conference again, and to get our first bowl win. We have many of the pieces to do just that in 2010. Let's go for it.
