So I'm playing in 2007 as the Bungles and I have two solid MLB's:
9th year 63/63 with 2 yrs on his contract (base salaries of $3.4M&$3.8M)
3rd year 50/78 with 3 yrs on his contract
So I decide to trade the 9th year guy and none of the GM's will even trade for him! No recent injuries, nothing like that. Solid tackle pct. of 17.4% and played pretty well last season, but nobody wants him. Kinda weird. In 2004, I thought for sure I could at least get a solid draft choice for him.
Thoughts?

That's a pretty risky salary for a guy who's skills are going to be declining pretty quickly. I wouldn't trade for him.

Dola, he's ranked as the 13th best ILB in the league. Guess he's not as appealing based on that, since many teams only use 1 ILB and there's 32 teams.

Yes, I've found it hard to trade away a guy like that with a large salary. Good Luck.

I think the years might be the biggest factor in this. I haven't given the trading AI a true test yet (any kind of test yet), but I'm not sure how many teams IRL would give up a decent draft choice for a 9th year player. Usually when I see veterans that old traded (IRL), they are usually part of a deal (usually including a draft pick) to get a younger player, or a sweetener for a trade to move up in the draft.

Dang, if he's that good you should keep him. ;)
Maybe renegotiate his money into bonus and someone will eat the base?
I don't know. Hard to justify that kind of money, trading potential for a season or two of middle third productivity. I think it's good to see the AI thinking that way. Oh, and I've seen a fairly large number of guys like this in FA and asking for lesser salaries so the AI seems to be dumping them and the players seem to be realizing why but this is strictly anectdotal but I look for my LB's in the FA and at decent prices so that does color my opinion a bit.

At 9 years he's likely to go into freefall almost immediately. Add the fact that they could probably get someone almost as good on the free market and I've a hard time seeing why anyone would offer much for him either.

Why not move to a 3-4 for a while?

Here's hoping Jim tweaked the premature aging just a little bit for good players like this. I know Junior Seau and Zach Thomas are definite exceptions to the rule just off the top of my head..
