View Full Version : Active Roster Position Distribution

Hello all -
I've been playing the game since November and having a blast; addictive as sin. ;-)
I have a question concerning active roster composition. All things equal (i.e., no injuries, no TEs that can play FB well, etc.), here is a position distribution that I would prefer (I play the 3-4):
3 QB
3 RB (2 RB and 1 FB)
10 OL
5 WR
3 TE
1 K
1 P
6 DL
8 LB
4 CB
4 S
Total: 48
So I'm over the 46 man limit and need to make 2 of the above inactive. I know everyone probably has a particular preference, but my first cut would be one TE, but where else is it normal or traditional to cut the fat? For example, is it wrong to ever go without 4 CBs or 4 Ss in a game? How do people usually compose their active roster?
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
Cheers.

I haven't played in a couple of weeks, but I think I would cut a Safety, a DL (probably a DT),an LB, and a TE. I would then add a RB/FB.

You could cut the O-line rotation: 10 active O-linemen seem a bit high to me.
I usually go with:
3 QB
3 RB
1 FB
2 TE
4 WR
8 OL
1 K
1 P
8 DL
7 LB
4 CB
4 S

I usually go with:
3 QB
3 RB
2 FB
2 TE
4 WR
2 C
3 G
3 OT
1 K
1 P
4 DE
4 DT
4 OLB
2 MLB
4 CB
4 S
I wouldn't skimp on DBs because of the Nickel and Dime formations (regardless of 3-4 or 4-3). I think you can trim some fat with your TE and OL.

It's neat to see all the different setups, I go with:
3 QB
3 RB
1 FB
2 TE
5 WR
1 C
4 G
4 OT
1 K
1 P
4 DE
4 DT
4 OLB
2 MLB
4 CB
3 S

Surely it's based on special teams players and mentorship/youth. So there shouldn't be any hard and fast guidelines. But I agree that 10 offensive line players and 3 tight ends seems a bit excessive.
I'd start from having the base minimum and then assign the remaining spots to mentors, young players getting mentorship, kick/punt returners or cover for players that are prone to injury or have low endurance. If I don't fill the roster based on that then I'll bung in a 5th WR

Just for the record, my ideal base is generally (4-3):
3 QB
3 RB
2 FB
3 TE
5 WR
8 OL
1 K
1 P
7 DL
5 LB
5 CB
3 S
But as pointed out below, tends to vary a little depending on special teams, return skills and mentors.

Thanks everyone for the information and input. I have a much better idea now of how to approach configuring my active roster.
Cheers :-)

I run 4-3 and I like
3 QB
3 RB
2 FB
3 TE
4 WR
8 OL
1 K
1 P
6 DL (5 if 3-4)
6 LB (7 if 3-4)
4 CB
4 S
1 KR - either a WR or DB who's specialty is running back kicks - since it's rare to have one of my regular 45 who also has this ability - I try to have the best special teams in the league, so I'll get a specialist KR if I can. All things equal, I'd prefer him to be a #5 WR, but that's not always possible.

It matters if the mentor is active for mentorship? I thought as long as the mentor was on the roster it'd be good enough. He can still be on the sidelines providing mentorship, even if he (the mentor) isn't active, right?

I think, but I'm not sure, there's a small increase (in how much he mentors) if he is actually on the active roster. There was some kind of research on this, but I'm too lazy so search right now.:D
