Am I correct in assuming for an online league, when generating HTML I only need to generate history once a season (at the end)? Or do I need to do it every time in case it gets overwritten?

I suggest once a season, after the awards have been announced :)

Wow Markus i have to admit i hated 2006. I have been playing the preview copy and have already spent way more time on this version. Although it is not the 6.5 interface i find it much easier to get around than 2006 was. The facegen is great, especially when trading a player and seeing his uniform change. Overall i am very impressed. There was a bit more trading than i like but i didnt even look into changing any settings yet. It was very nice to see the Nats trade Soriano for a couple of quality propects and then check their front office and see that they are rebuilding. Great job so far.

You have two levels of tradding lower than the default one so if you want less or more trades, it's easily adjustable.

I'm about to go out of town for 8 days on business. Is there any way this can be released on Friday, because the thought of having a decent amount of time to play this game, and not having it, is seriously bumming me out.

Just got started a little last night with the preview. I tend to look at interface and mechanics assues as I don't cover the stats as well as some other guys around here.

The Good

Facegen is really cool
Thank God for the offer player trade option and star ratings
Much easier to get around than in 2006
Player's countries of origin seem much more realistic, but one season is a very small sample
The "fun" factor is way up. It feels much less like work then 2006
Age ranges in the minors looks much better, especially rookie ball

The Problems

Scouting difference between SISA and the team scout is too high. I'm regularly seeing my team scout rate guys as 5 star potential and SISA has them as 1 star potential. If this happened occasionally it would be fine, but it's happening a lot. Starting a career with a draft really shows the issue. Guys drafted in the first few rounds of a dispersal draft shouldn't have such wild variances between SISA and team scouts.

The dispersal draft also caused weird issues with payroll because of the scouting issue. Players with very high salaries that were drafted early based on a 5 star potential were assigned to minor league teams. I had two 5 mil+ pitchers with a one current/5 potential playing in AAA. I don't mind drafting on potential, but those guys shouldn't be drafted so high that they eat up so much money.

Can we please have sortable columns in the world screen? It would make scouting nations much easier.

There's still a big problem with staff that doesn't start at the major league level. I saw no coach or scout with double digit ratings that didn't start in MLB. This means that the only movement of staff comes between MLB teams. There is no use in promoting or searching other minor league talent.

I really don't like the limitation on shopping players. I think the 3 per day rule just needlessly aggravates. There is no real limit on how many guys I can shop(if I do three a day starting Jan 1 I can shop over 600 by the deadline), so this rule doesn't really accomplish anything other than making it more difficult for the player. I don't want to have to remember to start shopping a day before the deadline because I want to shop four players. A possible solution would be to only allow a player to be shopped once per calendar year.

I haven't played much and probably won't be able to play much with my remaining days. It seems to be a big improvement over 2006, though. If I get much farther in the game I'll post some more impressions.

I don't uderstand. SISA does not give any star/overall ratings, it just rates the skills. And it is intended that it is off a bit, although this was tweaked and SISA is much closer now than in 2006.

I'm not seeing this. Players with low actual ratings go to the minors, where they get minor league contracts unless they are on the 40 man roster.

I agree, but I didn't have time for that yet :(

Staff does develop over time, they get better as they gain experience, and eventually get big league jobs if they are lucky. Just like in real life.

Markus: I should clarify a couple of points. On the scouting issue it is a matter of potential ratings. I'm regularly seeing guys my scout has in the mid teens that SISA has in the mid single digits. For example the pitcher the AI drafted for me in the third round of the dispersal draft my scout had at 14/15/14 for potential and SISA had him at 5/6/5. He's just one example, but I'm finding them all over the league. The AI was also drafting guys early in the dispersal draft that had these kinds of discrepancies when I looked at other rosters with my scout's eyes. It's fine for this to happen occasionally, but when it's a regular occurance in the early rounds of the dispersal draft it seems to say that the scouting error between SISA and scouts is too great.

The salary problem is tied to the scouting problem. Because scouts see these 1/5 star guys as studs they're drafting them very early which I guess gives them a big salary. They aren't anywhere near ready to be MLB players, though, so they get sent to the minors. It's not that the decision to send them to the minors is bad, but it's not realistic to have guys making 5 mil playing in the minors. Two of the top three salaries on my team after the dispersal draft were pitching in the minors on Opening Day.

I hope staff develops like you say. I know they didn't in 2006 and I won't be playing long enough on the preview to find out.

As I said, this version looks much better than last year's.

A couple more things.

The Sim screen doesn't default to Spring Training during Spring Training. I'm I doing something wrong or is that by design?

When I scout draft prospects I'm getting way too many MRs in the top twenty. My scout said there were 5 MRs in the top ten and 7 in the top twenty. These weren't mislabeled starters either, all of them had an endurance of 6 or 7. Having that many low value positions makes it hard to compare accurately to the SION rankings that had no MRs in the top ten.

I may be missing something. What type of league set up do you have. When I draft players they only get min salary until they are arbritration eligible. In fact they make nothing (relatively) in the minors. Are you talking about signing bonuses? So even the first overall draft pick would make $350,000, or whatever the league minimum is, if he is in the Majors.

In the new recalculate mode you would be at a big advantage but not necessarily so in the classic mode. My thinking is the idea behind the new mode of play is generate results and player development very close to real life. Injuries can factor in but for the most part you can expect a player's career in this mode to very accurately mimic what he accomplished in his real career.

In the Classic mode the player development is much more like in a fictional world. So while there is a good chance that Schmidt and Sandberg will become superstars it is not always the case.

SISA (just like your scouts) can be way off when players are very young and have no experience. That is by design.

This salary problem is this: Once the draft is over, the game assigns fictional contracts to the players and calculates the financials based on that. Now, when you have that young player on the active roster / 40 man roster instead of in the minors when the draft ends, he'll get a salary.

Design. I'll change this next year :)

The players are rated relative to the talent of the league at their position. So, it looks like this draft had some very highly talented MR in there. Nothing wrong with it.

JPhillips

SISA (just like your scouts) can be way off when players are very young and have no experience. That is by design.

But all the teams in the league seem to be drafting guys early that SISA says are crap. I think at least for a dispersal draft that the ratings between SISA and team scouts are too far apart. If every team in the league is using top five round draft picks on guys SISA says are mid-single digit potential something isn't adding up.

The players are rated relative to the talent of the league at their position. So, it looks like this draft had some very highly talented MR in there. Nothing wrong with it.

So I shouldn't see this many MRs in every draft? I'll run a couple of seasons and see what I get. My problem is that my scouts rating of the top twenty is so dominated by MRs that I can't accurately assess who's fallen in the draft and may be a mid-first round bargain. It also just seems odd that my scout is saying 1/3 of the best players in the draft are MRs.

Wondering how sim times are for those of you playing. My current 16-team test league just took 10 minutes and 55 seconds to get from 10/01/2002 to 09/30/2003, in a league started in 2001, with other programs running in the background. That's quite a bit faster than 6.0x and 6.5x.

Was this an invite thing only or is there an actual demo out there?Anyone at FOFC who PMed Duffy by a certain time was invited to get a free full-featured 5-day preview. Also, a certain number of customers who pre-ordered were chosen (randomly, I think) to get in on the preview.

Just shut down all background programs, and turned off facegen.

Simmed from 08/01/2004 to 07/31/2005 in freaking 3 minutes and 11 seconds.

I have one league at each minor league level, and no college or high school leagues. Remember, this is a 16-team league, but still, that's approaching Mogul-esque speed.

When I really play OOTP, I tend to sim a month at a time, so I just timed one month. July 2006 took me 31.25 seconds.

I hope to have my preview review up over the weekend. Aside from Facegen being cool, I'm super impressed. Don't get me wrong, there's still a few faults here and there, but most of them are known and either being worked on, or are on the radar.

There'll be a release version demo when the game is ready for the public - these preview versions are 'beta demos' and as such are still work in progress builds ... for this reason they are invite only (although Duffy's been rather 'liberal' on the invite part at times ;) ).

It's in there. While it may never replace DMB as the defining standard for replay baseball, it's about 95% there.

The flexibility of the application, however, makes DMB look like it was written ten years ago (which is't far from the truth). The fact that you can play any season in history (along with the myriad of other fictional options) for $34.95 makes it a no brainer.

This will probably be my last sim speed check-in. I created a universe with 24 teams in MLB, and corresponding numbers in AAA, AA, A, short-season A, and rookie ball. I also created a 66-team mini-NCAA (all the football-playing schools in the 5 major football conferences, plus the Big East). Finally, I created a 64-team Georgia High School Association (4 teams from each of the 8 Regions in both AAAAA and AAAA). Point being, other than foreign leagues, this is a decent-sized universe, and probably the configuration that I'll end up using when I start playing for real. I started in 2001. Here are the sim times for the months. April's the longest month in this config, because I set high schools to start on March 1st. April ends up being the month where the most leagues are playing.

04/2002: 1:13
05/2002: 0:52
06/2002: 0:44
07/2002: 0:38

For a universe of that size, it seems *very* fast to me. When I first heard about multiple leagues, added minor league levels, and full minor league rosters, my first thought was that it would run too slowly for any of that to be a value-add. However, I can say without hesitation that it is very feasible, at least from a performance persepctive, to run some pretty massive association configurations.

Are great defensive players noticeable this year? In the past, it was hard for me to tell a great defensive player from a medicore one as the ratings to me, didn't translate well on to the field.

Is this year any different? Can say, Jim Edmonds get to more pop flies when you have him in the OF then say, putting Taguchi in CF?

I guess what I'm trying to say is, can you tell when you are playing a great defensive team vs a not so great defensive team? Is it plausable to put Taguchi in LF and sit Duncan late in a game?

Can you separate a player's history? I would like contracts in one area, awards in another area, not all under the one, "Player History" heading.

Basically I would like for them to be grouped like FOF 2007.

Forgive me, but I don't remeber much from the new interface last year. If I want to see when McGwire won the MVP, I don't want to read every line looking for it - I want it to be under "Awards" on his player card.

Can this be done from within the game?

Are great defensive players noticeable this year? In the past, it was hard for me to tell a great defensive player from a medicore one as the ratings to me, didn't translate well on to the field.

Is this year any different? Can say, Jim Edmonds get to more pop flies when you have him in the OF then say, putting Taguchi in CF?

I guess what I'm trying to say is, can you tell when you are playing a great defensive team vs a not so great defensive team? Is it plausable to put Taguchi in LF and sit Duncan late in a game?

Yes, you'll notice this. Your team pitching BABIP will be lower, thus less runs will be scored because your defenders take away more hits :)

Re: the expansion draft

Is the date of the expansion draft customizable in a multi-year sim? From what I've gathered, the default expansion draft date is mid-November. However, in OOTP free agents aren't really 'free' until after this date (sometime early the next calendar year IIRC). Therefore, you have players who are technically free agents, but are still part of their former team's organization and still have to be protected.

IRL, free agent contracts expire before an expansion draft, so their status in the draft is not an issue. Thus my question of customizable draft dates in a quick-sim.

This could be a problem. OOTP should mirror real life in this case.

Anxious to see how ootp runs on my new Core 2 duo pc!

Well, I don't have dual core but I just dropped a gig of RAM in my dual channel.
I was in the preview group, wish I'd have had the new RAM then. The game did run nice though with just 1 gig so 2 should just be adding gravy.

For now I'll have to test it out on EHM.

I love the sim speeds. I finished a few seasons with fairly large almanacs in just a few hours. I have to figure out how to save history, but not every boxscore, just the current season ones. I made an upload for my league and somehow included every boxscore for 5 seasons. Was a big file!

If you have not yet made that purchase, first check out this fan made video (http://montoyahome.com/baseball/ootp2007/whatsnew1a.wmv) and then if you like it why not place your pre-order (http://www.ootpbaseball.net/buy.php)

First thing I'm going to do is to expand the American League with current rosters to 16 teams and take over one of the expansion teams. The question is, how are the cities and the characteristics (owner, budget, etc) determined? It will be fun to do an expansion draft with that team. I have been waiting for a text sim to have this option for quite some time. The last one I can recall is FOF2.

If you run a historical replay but with fictional players, how does the computer handle player names? Do you get names that are era appropriate? It would detract from the overall immersion of the game to have Chico Escuela and Chan Ho-Park playing for you in 1901.

Here's a quote from it:

In the end, everyone from Bill James to Baseball Prospectus seems to come to the conclusion the players peak at about age 27 (give or take a year), with pitchers maybe a year later. But, of course, it's more complex than that. Baseball skills don't develop or erode at the same pace. Walks are an "old player skill," for example, while triples a "young player skill." Previous versions of the game, however, had every skill rising and falling in a standard umbrella pattern. OOTPv2007 is different. For the first time, it is modeling each skill as a separate component.
Granted, I don't expect perfect aging, but this is a HUGE step forward for the OOTP series.

I already know how I'm going to play my first league: run a 20-team league (structured like the above one, with one less team per division), from 1975-2000, to clear out all of the original players. Then, I'll start with an expansion draft after the 2000 season, adding four new teams to the league for a 4-division, 24-team format. I'll run an expansion team.

That's the way I have always played the game and in this version, I think you have to make you don't recalc or something like that.

Right now I am not sure, I really like the summary printout. Maybe there's a way to customize the reports to get something like that instead of the extraneous garbage that's there now.

You'll want to play "classic" style without the recalc option checked. Personally, I don't see any use for the recalc feature unless you are playing a strict replay season or want to sim accurate (but alternative) history for the MLB before you take over a team. Playing with recalc means, barring injuries, you know how a player's career is going to go, by and large. Even down to when Eckersley or Smoltz transitions to the bullpen. I won't be using that option at all.

Ditto. I thought about preordering as I'm almost 100% certain to get this based on my experience with the preview copy, but I have no time to play on Thursday so that eliminates the allure of the most recent preorder offer. If my plans fall through to go out Friday evening, I can always just order at that time. However, most likely I won't order and start playing until Saturday.

Agreed. Using "recalc" would give a massive unfair advantage over the CPU. I'm going to sim from the start of baseball until one of the expansion years and then take over an expansion team.

I like the "recalc" option for simming a fictional history before taking over. I assume I'll be able to turn it off when I take over (probably in the 1970's).

I like the idea of it, but in reality, I don't think I'll ever use it. One of things I want to see in my league is some context for what occurs. So when Tony Congliaro suddenly loses it, I want there to be a reason for it in the game apart from what I know really happened in real life. Guys whose careers got cut short by injury are the ones I have an issue with - we can pretend they just fell off a cliff within the game, but we won't see any pretext, no warning signs (no major injury or signs of having "lost it"), for why that happened.

Or, take when John Smoltz moves to the bullpen for another example...if he's a dominating starter, I want some contextual reason why the game would make him a closer. What if, based on the unknown factors such as injuries, free agency, etc., Smoltz is healthy in the game, pitches effectively in 2000 (based on a combo of his 3 or 5 year averages, let's say) instead of sitting out with an injury, the Braves have a great team and pitching staff, and in 2000 they sign Robb Nen to a 3 year deal as their closer. Now, in 2001, the game changes Smoltz to a closer because that's what happened IRL, and all of a sudden, based on circumstances that have no bearing on the context of the game, you've got 2 superb closers and a hole in the Braves rotation. Or, even worse, if you do the 1-year recalc, does Smoltz simply disappear for no reason for 2000, no injury or any pretext for missing an entire year?

Bottom line for me is that there are some things that just "happen" in baseball - Joe Charbonneau and Jerome Walton are one-hit wonders, and I can deal with that if they pop up and are quickly gone in looking at my league's history - but there are others that are completely contextual and have to bear some relationship to what is going on in the game. And with players who had CEIs IRL or changed positions, I don't see it working all that smoothly. On the flipside of the Smoltz thing, what about guys like Pete Rose or Craig Biggio who switched positions? What if the Astros didn't need a second baseman in 1992 - say, they signed Robbie Alomar the year before? The game doesn't know it's about to have his position switched, so the AI makes decisions based on present need only and ends up with no catcher and 2 all-star second basemen.

Things like that are what is bothering me about the recalc feature, even if I'm not going to actively play while it is being used. Of course, I had a conceptual problem with how the Back to the Future movies played out, too. :D

From the sounds of it, this game will be playable out of the box. That's pretty exciting, because after the debacle last year, I wasn't looking forward to the release, but preordered last month anyway figuring that I'd want to try it out when it came out.

Tomorrow should be a great day if this is worth the hoopla we're hearing. And that's a great thing, especially since I'm moving until next week so I get the weekend to veg and immerse into it.

According to Markus, the game is finished and ready, so it looks like no major delays before release.

I want to start a 1901 historical league, and play a lot, so what happen when, in 2000, I will be like 120 years old ?

And with the automatic expansion of the league, do the minors league update too ? If the MLB get 2 more clubs, do the AAA, AA and A league get 2 more club too that are affilated with the new major's one ?

If they are claiming a 1am release, I suspect that it will probably be 1am GMT as the entire SI team is based in Europe.

(That is under two hours from now, as we are just four hours ahead of EST until our clocks change this weekend)

For those who will get the pre ordered game today, i have created a fictional players real MLB pack and template.

It's a MLB07 template and graphics pack, with all the correct team names and affiliations for 2007, from MLB to rookie levels. No players included, so when you create a game based on this template, fictional players will be generated and you will run an inaugural draft. You can also use this template as base to create your own, adding more leagues etc before starting the game.

Before starting the universe, remember to edit the template in advanced mode to fit your needs and likings as the options have been setup how i like to play the game (for example 1-10 ratings scale etc). To use it, start a league from template and choose the icy-mlb07 template.

It includes all the following graphics:
MLB real teams colors
MLB real logos
MLB real caps
MLB real jerseys

IL AAA real teams colors
IL AAA real logos
IL AAA real caps
IL AAA real jerseys

PL AAA real teams colors
PL AAA real logos
PL AAA real caps
PL AAA real jerseys

AA real logos

A real logos

SA real logos

R real logos

I might work on AA and A jerseys etc in the future, but after some months betatesting the game and creating this graphics, i want to play the damn game now :D

Those graphics will be stored in your data folder and will be used everytime you start a new game with the correct team names, for example when in the future a real rosters pack is released by somebody, this graphics pack will be 100% compatible.

Here is the 1.0 file, enjoy and please post here about any error or problems.

http://www.prodeportes.com/ootp07/Icy-MLB07-pack-1.zip (11Mb file)

Instructions:

Unzip the file to your OOTP07 data folder (for example)

c:\Documents and Settings\your user\My Documents\Sports Interactive\OOTP Baseball 2007\data

When asked about overwriting existing folders answer yes (it won't overwrite anything).

Only one problem by now, right now there is no way to store the texture name in the jersey logo name, so the colors are saved but not if the jerseys have stripes, or pinstripe line, etc. It means that you could have a NY Yankees with he right colors but without stripped lines in the jersey as right now the texture is randomly assigned (i just requested it to Andreas). You can edit it easily in the teams options and colors screen, selecting the stripes jersey texture.

To have all the logos etc working properly, i suggest to do the following:

1- Go to Game setup
2- Go to the Players and Pictures options screen
3- Click on all the buttons in the "Team picture functions" section:
Reset all teams logos
Reset all caps logos
Reset all jersey logos
Reset all caps textures
Reset all jersey textures

An important note on Icy's template (or any template): if you start a league using the template and change your league structure during league creation (say you only want 24 teams in MLB, but want to use the real logos, for example) make sure you regenerate your league's schedule. (If you change league structure during league creation, no warning is generated to remind you to do this. If you change league structure at any other time, it will warn you to recreate the schedule.)

However, all teams in this template are set to not allow beards. So you may want to go into each teams uniform editor and enable that option again :)

To use it, start a league from template and choose the icy-mlb07 template.

Okay, I've downloaded and unzipped everything in the data folder. The icy-mlb07 template is in the World Template folder, but when I try to start a league with a template the game is not letting me do it. I pull up the Create League from Template option, but there's nothing listed. What am I doing wrong?

Do you use a MAC? if so, when you unzipped the file, it created a folder named "Icy MLB pack" into the "data" folder. It doesn't happen on Windows.

If that is the case, just take all the stuff from into that "Icy MLB pack" folder and put it one level above, in the "Data" folder.
