My first go round in this game, I cleaned house. Traded away alot of veterans, for 1st, 2nd or 3rd round picks. Traded alot of picks to move up in the draft and select the top QB. Big mistake because it took him 4 years to develop into an average QB.   Needless to say, my best record was 6-10 in 4 years. I gave up.
My second go round, I traded picks for veterans and made a splash in free agency by grabbing alot of middle tier guys. Guess what? Super Bowl 2nd year!!!!!! :D :D :D
Best way to build is to get yourself a couple of superstars, and surround them by alot of middle tier guys. :) :) :)

Maybe you just suck at drafting? You actually have to spend time and fully evaluate these players as best you can. Don't go ranting on this message board because you failed to do so.

I've seen four or five teams in MP leagues go for the major overhaul through the draft and never seen any of them succeed. I always chuckle to myself when I see someone do it because I'm reasonably confident how it's going to wind up.
First season they are expectedly horrible and go about 2-14.
Second season they seem to improve and things look up, they go 5-11.
Third season expectations are high and the team is bad, they go 5-11 or 6-10
Fourth season they look for a new coach and go 5-11
Fifth season, well usually the owner gives up and quits the league and someone else comes in thinking they have great young talent to rebuild with then find themselves in cap hell with the renegotiations of all these guys that got drafted 4-5 years before.

Just like RL in the NFL, you have to find a middle balance. You need vets and rooks to have a team that will be successful.

Agreed. To build a winning team the draft is almost always the base in MP, and very often a couple of big trade acquisitions give the team that final push. Its hard not to win in SP, its no test really.
The leagues best players are all drafted. To say you can't build through the draft, is just an indicator of poor drafting skills.

You most certainly CAN build through the draft.

If you have a cohesive plan and are dedicated to it, you can build through the draft. However, if you stumble to the left, lurch to the right, try this and that, you're toast.
In SP, there's no point in discussing it. It's way too easy.
I agree, building your team through the draft is pointless if you don't know what you are doing.

The only route to "long term continued" success in MP is the draft.

Or reloading through trading draft picks every year..
I just dont think a mix works.

You most certainly CAN build through the draft.Well the examples I've seen were where teams got 20 or so draft picks, maybe 5,6 or even 7 first rounders and did this for a couple straight seasons. I've seen it tried several times in MP and I've never seen it work. If you made it work then great, but my experience is building solely through the draft doesn't work online. In SP I've done it myself many times, although it's harder with the current version of the game.

In SP the best strategy is - of course - a combination.
You almost never see the real stud QBs, DEs and OLTs in the free agent pool, and it's a lot easier to win games with a couple of these guys...
In the newest version (2007) the AI is maniacal about LBs as well, and it's hard to get these even during the draft.

They're probably having serious cohesion issues.

So true. If you play in a top-flight mp league, it is really tough to compete unless you are an adroit drafter.
I'm not talking about just top 5 picks either - you need to be able to identify the fourth and fifth round creepers that will form the interior of your o-line or linebacking corps or other position group someday.

Any fool can win a one off title in SP FOF.
It's building a genuine dynasty that takes effort.
