How would I go about running a historical SP game?

Check the reference thread at the top of this forum, download the historical rosters and drafts. Then import the roster for the year you want to start using the "alternate roster file" option when starting a career, and every year import the draft file for that given year, and there you go!

You don't have to do this but you can also import that year-appropriate draft class too each year too.
Extract the draft file to someone easy to find,e g. your desktop. Click the import button. Click on the draft file. It's there.
I'm sure there's a better way to do it, but I have to use the idiot approach.

An even easier approach is to download and extract all the Nilodor draft and roster files into a directory thence you can find them all in one place.

The problem with Nildor's files is that there aren't enough players to fill out the draft and so you have to draft nobodies for 5 rounds. Some people think it's fun to watch the Lynn Swan's dominate the league. I find it defeats the purpose of running a historical sim.

I agree that more depth would be great but there is no way to merge the real life draft files with GOOD cpu created players...or is there???

Don't think so, if you import a draft file I believe the rest of the class will be generated as "roster fodder"
