No big injury and was under contract when all of a sudden he retired, worst dice roll ever or something else?

In the same season, New England lost former #9 pick QB Tommie Osborne after 6 seasons. His retirement sort of makes sense, he was a starter for his first 4 years and then a backup to two 16 year veterans for the last 2 seasons, and decided to call it quits.

But Lyons leaving after 7 is certainly unusual. He would have turned 30 this next season. He lives in California, just 260 miles from where he played for the 49ers.

Maybe it was the pass attempts? He usually threw more than 600 times a year. 103 attempts in 2 playoff games last year.

Maybe he's seen the drama revolving around Dustin Grossman's return for a 17th season, and decided that he wants no part of the fame and attention of being an elite eNFL QB.
