View Full Version : So...6.3b TCY Importing?

It's definitely better. Has anyone played a long-term career with it? I've messed around some, and here are my initial impressions...
Great to have more variance in height/weight/age in the draft class. Now that height and weight matter a little more, it does intrigue me to see what kind of production I might get from a 6'6" QB or WR with 45/45 type ratings. I don't think those players exist at all in game-generated classes. Or maybe one of these kids that hit the league really young might play 18 or 19 years
Talent level feels actually *more* like an NFL Draft than an FOF Draft. NFL Draft=even the 1.1 isn't a sure thing every year. FOF Draft=the top five will virtually always be studs, maybe just not a position you like.
I don't care about the "OH NOEZ!!! A GUY WHO DIDN'T PUT UP GOOD NUMBERS IN COLLEGE WENT 1.1" stuff. I know some do. It's still there. I don't see how you can get around that without TCY having much better player usage AI and a more robust transfer system.
Talent at some positions may be capped a fair bit below normal FOF standards. For example, I think the highest-rated TE I saw in around 10 seasons of importing was like 64/64. (They do have BPR ratings now, though.) Sample size was small, so maybe an 85/85 guy comes along once every 15 years or so and I just didn't get one.
Perhaps related to the second bullet: seems much more rare to have guys with roughly-equal bars across the board. I would *think* this would create more of the ability/desire to go after players with certain skill sets.Anyone else messed around with this?

What the heck? I figure I'll just start from scratch and sim a few seasons...
TCY Settings
Put Sol8 in Alaska and that is "my" team.
No suspensions (I figure that'll reduce some of the guys who don't play in college and get drafted top 5)
Everything on otto and fastsimFOF Settings
Default roster set, starting in 2009
Began importing 2009 TCY into 2010, which means that all imported players will have been recruits who played in TCY for their full careers2009 CLASS
a 6'6" QB and a 6'6", 238-pound WR
Birthdays range from 1/21/84 (26 years old on draft day) to 8/22/91 (technically 18 on draft day...19 for the season)
Best player is QB Karl Hernandez. CLE takes him 1(1). He's 39/57-->37/58

2010 CLASS
There's a 6'7", 234-pound no-combine QB with a 34 (blue) Solecismic score, 44% developed, 14 formations, and interesting bars. Remind me to check on Marvin Lofton from K-State in a few years.
I'd say it's a toss-up between the best two players: QB Brady Caldwell and QB Wally Freeman. Best combines definitely belong to WLB Randy Merrill. Freeman goes 1(1) to KC. Caldwell goes 1(4) to CHI. Merrill goes 1(14) to TN. Initial camps are....
Freeman: 43/72-->50/70
Caldwell: 39/66-->unsigned
Merrill: 36/67-->19/45 (VSOD)
Age range of 19 to 27.

2011 CLASS (2012 Draft)
Top WR is 6'5", 228 pounds and has 3 blues and a red. I'll make sure to check in on Leland Emarlos in a few years.
This looks like one of those years I mentioned above where there's just not anyone of what most would consider FOF Top 5 Quality. Put it like this: I just loaded up several MP draft classes. All but one had a guy with a total score of 400 or better by my Analyzer Weights, and all of them had 4-8 guys in the 300s. This class? Top guy=255. You just don't see that with FOF-generated drafts.
Age range still 19 to 27. I'll stop checking that at this point. Looks darn near static.

The set of historical draft files that the HFL is using is edited TCY files, so I can see some similarities to your conclusions, for example the talent cap. We do get the uber-studs, but they are extremely rare. Owners are complaining about the lack of talent in the draft, but there's some interesting projects each year, like Scott Mitchell in the latest class. We've been running for so long that most teams have starters in the 40/40-35/35 range, where in leauges with FOF-generated drafts rarely have to reach that deep in the pool.

2012 CLASS (2013 Draft)
Huge drop-off after the top two guys. Actually overall this class is probably a little worse than last year's. The difference is that there are two worthy top picks in this draft. But from there, it really falls off the table to guys I'm pretty sure would be bottom 1st/high 2nd type picks in a strong MP league.
No particularly intriguing guys this year because of height/weight, although still definitely more tall WRs and QBs than game-generated classes.

I'm thinking I'll report on the first five classes, then do 20 years of importing and see what the league talent pool looks like.

2013 CLASS (2014 Draft)
J.R. West looks like a pretty monster QB.
WR Lincoln Adams comes over with a 4.29 dash, 6.93 agi, but only 7 bench. Heh.
INSERT: Forgot to write down pre-camp ratings for West and Adams. End of regular season, they are 41/59 and 39/45.
