I just bought this game a few days ago, so apologies if any of these are common knowledge already...

1. How do you guys handle the preseason? Do you let the backups play/start mostly, like in real life, or do you just have your regular starters play? I have injuries at 150, so I'd hate to risk injuring all my regulars, and I want to develop my younger players too, so Im leaning towards giving the backups a shot...

2. What's the real difference between split ends and flankers, talent-wise? I'm pretty sure flankers are bigger, while split ends tend to be lighter and faster, is that right?

3. I notice when I sim a few weeks, my GM will have made some releases/signings. Is there a way to make it where I have total control over all transactions?

4. On the flip side, is there a way to put the AI in control of all teams, including mine? (sometimes I like to just sim and watch a player's career unfold, but it would be a lot easier if I wasnt in control of a team and could just "watch" the league's progress)

1. Regular starters games 1-3, with low PT; backups game 4. Any injuries I bench, even if probable. While you want to get backups time, you want to develop your young starters, and also get good cohesion and rust elimination.

2. In real life, yes, but not sure about in this game.

3. Global settings.

4. Global settings.

1) FWIW, I usually rest any starter that has played more than 6 seasons, and is maxed out, for the entire pre-season. At most I will play them maybe a little bit in the last pre-season game.

What you want to do in pre-season is play your starters Gm 1 and Gm 2. This will eliminate their rust. Then, you rest them 3 and 4, allowing any injuries to heal and eliminating the rust of your backups.
