Is it possible to get fired in the single player mode? If so has it ever happened to anyone?

Yes it has happened to me, though really for it to happen you have to be really bad in the profit margins. At least that has been my experience. Typically it happens for me when I build a new stadium or relocate or some such action that requires a lot of funding.

but, to clarify, it also gives you the option of overriding it and staying in control.
