Front Office Football Eight News – Football Frontier (http://www.solecismic.com/frontierblog/uncategorized/front-office-football-eight-news/)
After probably the longest and most intense development cycle of my career, I feel confident in announcing the pending release of Front Office Football Eight. When, you might ask? I’m hoping it will be out on Steam on Wednesday. But that will be up to them. I will submit a final build by Monday morning.
You’ll notice a lot of changes in the new product. I think it looks a lot better. Another fantastic main background and branding from Cyril Chong – he’s also been wonderful working with my admittedly intense and varied development schedule. A new menu system designed to get you wherever you want in lightning speed. Non-modal windows mean you can have a lot of information on your screen(s) all at once.
There’s a new game planning system that’s modeled after how NFL coaches prepare for each game. And, each year, you’ll be able to install your own playbook, complete with plays designed to fit your team’s strengths. Of course, Rex is improved, and you’ll have more options for letting him get you through the complicated stuff at first.
Numerous other improvements and new features round out the package. This is definitely the biggest leap between new versions I’ve ever tried. This is the final major piece of new development for my vision of Front Office Football. After a good rest, I hope to start on TCY2. No promises there, but the vision has always been about having both products.
The price of Front Office Football Eight is $29.95. I will offer a 10% discount upon release to reward existing customers who know this is something they want right away..

Are you f'n kidding me! Yay. Thought it may happen next year, but this is great news.
Awesome! I'm new to the franchise, having only played FOF7, but I've got about 30 seasons into my FOF7 franchise and will love to try the new game. I'm hoping it has more flexibility and immersion for those who play custom/fictional games, but we'll wait and see.
Questions for those veterans of the series ...
Is there normal any compatibility between versions? (Ie. Will FOF7 saves work on FOF8?)
Secondly, I know FOF is typically a rock solid game with no big bugs/issues and good stability, but is that normally right after release, or are there typically a few patches/updates that come out before veterans normally start their "long-term" games?

Game is usually pretty good upon release.
I don't recall a lot of patches, but they usually happen pretty quickly. Updates seem to be a new thing and a roster update.
But I might be remembering incorrectly.
FOF is typically a game you can buy the first day and not worry about a bunch of problems.

This has always been one of the most stable games coming out of release that I have every played. Very impressive how Jim releases FOF almost seemingly bug free. There are other games I enjoy that are not nearly as polished upon release.

From reading the development blog on this game and what Jim has written on the boards, I doubt an FOF 7 save is going to work with FOF 8. It seems like a fairly decent sized change from the last version.
Bugs? Stability? Usually pretty damned good from the second you fire it up.
As someone who has owned every game in the series, this is an automatic day 1 purchase and I'm planning on spending a lot of time this holiday weekend playing it. I don't think I'm the only one here with that idea. That should tell you something about the history of this title.

That's it?? No Single Player Revolutionizing?!?!??
My BIGGEST 'Grip' wasn't the GUI, perse. It was the inability to carry-over a career from one of FOF to a new FOF. I have both seen and read that Jim will work with MP Online Leagues so that they can carry over their careers, keeping all of their seasons and stats intact. Why??? Why won't Jim do this for us SP guys?? I'd even pay a fee if I needed to so that it could/would happen.
I'm very excited, but I'm holding out being overly excited. I'm a first day buyer, no doubt, but.....I sure hope we will now have the option to carry over and import a league....even in SP/Single Player Mode. =/

It'd be fun to hear something, to get excited about new features, etc - not sure why we have secrecy for a game coming out in 3 days. But, Jim has always done things his way when it comes to this stuff, and the end result is always good - so whatever works for him.
It's a little bittersweet for me. I'm going to Thailand so it would've been awesome to play on the long flight Tuesday.
BUT it will be a purcase as soon as I can get it.

I guess the end result being always good is relative, but I must agree that the stance on PR/promotion for the game is a bit odd. However, I understand the limitations of a one-man operation and obviously it's better for him to be coding than promoting. That being said, it's a reason I always wished FOF would have joined forces with Out of the Park Developments. Jim could focus on coding and they then have a PR team that could get the word out and help build buzz and grow the community.
Also would have been nice to see a game with the rock solid engine of FOF combined with the good GUI and interface/graphics of OOTPD games.
I feel although FOF has done well there are many many more people who could be reached if the game had better PR and/or aesthetics.

Well, it wasn't always this way. There was some buildup leading to the release of TCY (i.e. screenshots, chats, interviews). A few people, my then-teenage self included, didn't handle it well when the game didn't quite meet our expectations.
Since then, Jim has always been real tight-lipped on development until the game was near imminent release. This way nobody has false expectations about the game and Jim can spend more time in development. This approach is certainly unorthodox but I think it's ultimately what's best for him, the company, and his customers.
Kudos to him for this progressive approach. A lot of developers crave that pre-release buzz. Jim looks beyond that "fun" and simply produces great games.
With that said I can't wait for the latest release, but history has taught me that it'll be well worth the wait.

I think the screen is designed to show off the fact you can have multiple windows open at once, which is pretty cool.
However, whIle overall it is a bit cleaner aesthetically I agree it's not really a revolutionary new look otherwise.
Ben E Lou
11-21-2016, 08:21 AM
Anyone expecting a "revolutionary new look" hasn't been paying attention for the last 18 years. This text (or something very similar) has been on his web site for years, and he's made numerous comments along these lines on forums as well.
My primary goal is to provide cutting-edge sports simulations with clean, simple interfaces. I'm not going to waste valuable development time with expensive graphics. I will continue to work on presenting as much information as humanly possible on each game screen, in ways that are clear and easy to understand.
Sporkimata

Hell the addition of multiple windows is something I never expected to see. I am psyched. I wonder if extra points will be as janky as it has been this season.

Well I haven't been around for 18 years of this game, the only previous version I've ever played is FOF7. This game is not a graphical paradise and never will be. The UI is designed to give you the information you need , not go "whiz bang, OMG, look at that ultra HD picture of this fake player from 2054"
The idea Jim talked about was always being able to open more windows on a multiple monitor setup.
From pure information standpoint, look at all of the information you can see with just this screenshot:
The DE on the player card show was a 1st round pick from Cincy. He played 9 seasons there. In the 9 seasons, he missed a total of 19 games. (125 games played, 144 would have been possible)
He got a ring. He was converted to a 1 gap DT. He is the 5th ranked FA of the class.
SF franchised a DE and allowed a pro bowl caliber CB move on. (did they have young CB's they liked, is their line horrific if that DL leaves?, do they have a high pick and like a CB for that slot? Cap room? Attitude? Scheme? Already franchised him and the cost would be astronomical if they did it again?
Philly has two tackles in the top 30 free agents and franchised neither one.
Just in that single screenshot, I'm involved in that universe. I would love to see the reasoning behind each teams decision.
Some people get excited by pretty graphics. I'd be happy with a plain spreadsheet if it gave me the information I was looking for.
Edit: As with SD, I hope this doesn't come off as harsh to new users or old expecting different things. I never figured the graphics would change with the looks of the screens. I figured it was how the information was laid out and how easy it would be to get to different spots.
Sorry..that didn't come off the way I intended it to newer users. It was just meant to say that unless Jim has a massive change of heart/direction, I don't see the game getting a huge new "look" being a priority to him.
No worries, no apology needed, I know what you're saying.
I knew of FOF for years but never really took the plunge and gave it a fair chance until FOF7, as I'm not as much a football fan as other sports when it comes to sim games. That being said, once I actually got used to the game and realized how solid it is, that's when I got hooked. That's what counts in the end.
In the end none of us play these games for eye candy anyway, although it never hurts. I wish something like Facegen could be added to the game though, that would definitely be something to add a lot of life to have players have actual pictures to represent them.

Those that are around this site are tried and true in their faith in the product and will purchase no matter what. But the UI is stale. I understand how it presents information all in one go and one previous user stated seeing all of that puts him in that universe.
But as I look at FOF 7 on Steam it is disheartening to see 111 reviews.
Users clamor for a football game that will immerse them and is playable and they can get "into". And the options are lacking. I would say having a football game on steam Steam should be an easy win. But the users on this forum are not the targeted audience I would think.
I still feel like looking at that screenshot, I am looking at any other version of FOF going all the way back to the game I bought way back when.
While I am still looking forward to FOF8, (not to be critical) but it is more like FOF 1.8.

There might be 111 review, but there's about 7,000 owners via steam: Attention Required! | CloudFlare (https://steamdb.info/app/344340/graphs/)
Plus, this game was already owned by tons of people outside of steam, like myself.

I am excited for this new version. However, I would like to see some things added that were lacking in previous versions:
Practice squads
Facegen or some type of player photo
News items
Search function in-game to find a specific player or position
I have my doubts that any of these things are in FOF8, but they would create more immersion and perhaps upgrade the game a little in the process. A revitalized UI would be nice but as a fan of this game for many, many years I realize that Jim is not interested in updating the GUI and thus, I don't worry about it too much.

Agreed. Many did have before Steam. Count me as one of them. But I don't present that "111 reviews" stat as being overly comprehensive as to owners of the game. But going to Steam I would imagine was a way for Jim to get the game out there to more people were unaware of the game. To get in in the hands of those outside of this community.
It may have even been successful. My main point, a small one based on what the game is, is that an overhauled and more streamlined UI would have been great.
I won't lie. I initially saw the screenshot posted on OS, and I just thought someone used an image from FOF Seven as a placeholder. When I read it was a new screenshot... I sighed.

I'm not going to flame you. If you feel that way, so be it.
But this game is not about the graphics. Anyone looking for that type of upgrade was always going to be disappointed. The quote from the website is how this series is made.
The improvements from one to seven have been massive. What you call 1.1 to 1.7 is an entirely different game, even in single player mode. The multi player add on speaks for itself. What you are saying is the game looks like 1.8.
To me, that is not only fine, it I'd preferred. I love more open screens and easier to get information. That's the only ui thing I care about.

I've always liked Jim's spreadsheet style. It's a text sim. Spreadsheets are probably the most efficient way to present information. I've always found other text sims to be a little disorienting, my eyes and brain don't always lock onto their presentation of the data the same way they do for Jim's games.

See being an old fart like I am I love that the basic maneuvering of stuff is staying the same. I unfortunately get frustrated trying to learn a new sport sim if it does not function like something I am familiar with. Just one of the reasons OOTP, FOF and FBCB are my favorites. Honestly it is not that I cannot learn but I like to jump right in and get started without having to learn something new. Man I have become my parents!

Definitely since FOF4 (2002, I think,) the game doesn't really *look* much different. However, just about every new version since then had something that was a big step forward in actual game play.
(And yeah, when I worked in an office I wanted it less color and more spreadsheet-looking.)

Hell, I breathed a sigh or relief when I saw the screen shot. I was happy to see fof8 keeping the look I am used to and not reinventing the wheel. Multiple open screens and player cards with more info available in one look is going to make playing so much more enjoyable for me.
I would have liked to see the ability to have a photo on the player card and have user made face-packs, but not a game-breaker. Team helmets or logos will have to do:)
I just hope Steam is up to speed and gets it out on Wed.

Need practice squads so bad
Practice Squads would be great if we had a lot of injuries to deal with. I suppose, in SP and a high injury setting, I could see the value.
And I'm not going to discredit the value of practice squads in this game...but in MP (where the injury settings are kept relatively low), there is hardly any discernable difference between anybody left in Free Agency that I wonder who we would actually place on our practice squads and why?
Now...if there was some sort of bonus for being aware of the coaches playbook, then I could definitely see a benefit.
And FOF8 does have something akin to playbooks apparently...so who knows!

I am excited by the idea that a DE making $19M can identify as a "1-Tech. DT". It add a whole new layer to team building when you have to put complementary pieces together instead of knowing what 3 positions you need big bars.
It's also interesting to see the combines for a 9-year vet - wonder if that changes over time?
Last 2 year stats on the player card is a nice change, just one less thing to click

I'm not sure what their policy is on previous versions. In the past, I have always stopped selling the prior version when a new one is available.

NEW IN VERSION EIGHT
For those of you who have played Front Office Football in the past, there are dozens of new features in the game. This is our most ambitious new product to date, and you'll find it a much more realistic professional football experience.
Custom offensive playbooks. Each year, during training camp, you can create a book of up to 200 offensive plays to use during the season. Of course, as with all the management features in Front Office Football, the game's AI can create a playbook specifically for your team if you like.
New player participation charts. You can select your starters based on personnel groupings. This gives you much more control over who is on the field in every situation.
More realistic game planning. Rather than filling out extensive charts, you can write scripts for the plays your team will run in every situation. Create a list of plays for use in the Two-Minute Drill. Save your best plays for those critical third-and-three situations. This is much closer to how professional teams handle in-game play-calling. On defense, your plan will cover how you react to what your opponent is doing. You'll have fewer choices to make, but the choices will have a big impact on performance.
Instant history (or at least history created as quickly as your computer can run). At the press of a button, you can generate up to 50 seasons of "history" for your league, with the AI running every team.
Enhanced Multi-Player Support. A fuller set of options for maintaining your multi-player games. Additional security features to prevent "hacked" stage files and file compression to shorten load times and reduce the FTP space needed to run a game.
New player cards with quick access to all the information available about each athlete.
Create graphs showing how many wins each franchise has over any time period in your league to highlight potential dynasties.
A playoff probability simulator so that late in the season you can determine each team's chances of reaching the playoffs or gaining a first-round bye.
A brand new menu interface. Front Office Football will never be the prettiest game in the world, but the the new menu will quickly get you any place in the game.
Interface improvements. Switch between using various screens within the game. You can even take advantage of multiple monitors and have all sorts of varied information available at once. Front Office Football has always been about displaying as much information as possible.
Quote of the Day. Every day, you can read a quote from the vast store of collected wisdom within the Front Office Football universe.
Extensive improvements and fine tuning within the game engine. Little was left untouched. The heart of Front Office Football is in the play results and the simulation of thousands and thousands of games.
A 2016 player file and coach file.
Thanks for taking a look at Front Office Football Eight.

You got that right sir!
I've never purchased FOF on Steam.. is there a way to update logos and what not?
Can't say I was not disappointed when I saw the screenshot at OS main site, the game looks almost the same as it has in the last few years. For some reason I thought that Jim had a designer working with him on it, and honestly it's exactly the type of design that Jim has done all by himself in the past. With redesign I was not expecting a big move, maybe just the windows looking a little more modern than windows 3.1 or just improving the default team logos at least would have been an advance.
After the initial shock, I realized that after all these years not changing his mind... why would he now? Would a new interface give him more sales in Steam? of course yes. Does Jim care about what people think about his interfaces or those potential extra sales? seems not, and it's his game as his decision, so it's respetable. I guess his experience while working with EA in one of the old versions spoiled him about trying to be more mainstream.
Do I really need a pretty interface myself? Well I wouldn't say OOTP or even FM are pretty, but they are functional (imho) while helping a to the immersion factor, while still remaining as "text sims". Something that is hard for me with FOF the same way I can't really feel immersed into Minecraft or Dwarf Fortress, but that is just me, and the true is that millions of people don't care at all about those games graphics, heck i still play Steel Panthers despite being a really old and graphically outdated game because it's a great sim.
What surprises me a bit is how exigent and sometimes even harsh FOFC is to other text sims developers and how permissive is about FOF interface in 2016 so I couldn't just shut up this time even if this won't make me very popular here and at the risk of offending Jim, that I admire and respect for keeping his passion after that many years.
So ok after this little rant and thoughts, let's focus on what he does well, that is an almost perfect stats generator that must be incredible difficult in a game with as many variables, specially now with more gameplans options that for sure will be be tried to exploit specially in MP.
In the past despite the interface I managed to get immersed due to the great sim engine and features, so I'm I'll do again and for sure will buy it as soon as it's available today.

Quote of the Day. Every day, you can read a quote from the vast store of collected wisdom within the Front Office Football universe.
Many other internal changes. Little was left untouched. As always, the long-term value of Front Office Football is the simulation itself. Much of development includes continued refining of the statistical engine, as well as continuing to improve the game's AI so that you can have a competitive single-player experience. This is the heart of the Front Office Football experience.

I am not overly worried about the UI, to be honest I have really never had an issue....its functional and provides me all the info I want. Much more focused on stats, roster management, draft, game planning, etc. The thing I am most eager to see is the new play/game planning features. Not sure if this is a compliment or insult (not intended as an insult) but due to low expectations regarding Jim's take on graphics when I saw the screenshot I was actually impressed. I really like how it looks. OOTP seems to be trying to blur the line between text sim and something resembling a console game, FOF has and seems always will be a strictly hardcore text sim game. It is what it is so thebest thing to do is appreciate the modest gains in the graphics dept. I haven't played the last version of FOF but this new game looks like the slickest version yet. It looks great, although technically you need to qualify that statement with "...for a FOF game".

Sports Radio. Are there any quarterback controversies in the league? If so, you'll find them here, and that may explain a team's current difficulties.

One of the first things that jumped out at me from the offensive document:
Every year, all players are tested in the combine events. Front Office Football does this because you
don’t have actual tape to watch, as real professional coaches have.

Jim, THANK YOU for clearly explaining where players will be lined up. The bits about gap assignment will be huge going forward, but the clear and concise explanations of exactly where players are on any given play is huge and clears up all misconceptions.

This might be the single biggest thing I'm excited about now. Knowing Jim, I know it isn't going to be cut/dry. (he lost .3 in the dash so he went from a starter to a bench player) But it is going to give me the ability to see those guys who clearly have lost a step.
I can choose to be like Bill B and trade the guy right away or I can start the player another year and plan for FA and the draft. It should give us a little more detail when someone has an "off year" as to why that is.
ugh, I know it's 6 hours away, but I still refresh steam every five minutes hoping they've made it live.

Very well put, Icy.
My sentiments exactly.
Oh, I'm buying the 'game', of course. I'll mod it like I do every edition released before (well, that is if reshacker will work on/with FOF8).
EDIT: I had always felt that the FOF UI looked like cardboard, and while I prefer a more vibrant interface, FOF8 does appear to look much more clearer/sharp.

Can you install or transfer a game through Steam to another computer? I have a Mac, but run Windows through Parallels off of a USB drive. Away for the weekend, though, and forgot to bring the drive. OOTP is fine but
A. It's Pretty much an annual release at this point
B. Has it really been any different for the past 5 or 6 years?
Serious question. I see small tweaks but the sim and trade engines have seemed identical for years now and the tracked stats seem the same.
This is a release 3 years later that is probably way more complex than the prior version and probably isn't compatible save wise.

The last version of OOTP allowed use of multiple processors for simulating, making the game much more optimized and faster while simming.
Sure, most sports titles, whether they are arcade or sim, get yearly releases and they don't reinvent the wheel every year, however I would personally pay for a new football sim every year if I enjoyed it. Even if it's just for new rosters and a couple of tweaks.

Loving the expanded defensive options, QB spy in particular. Presumably that will take a man out of coverage to snuff out running QBs.

Beyond that, I'm not sure how "hard" we are on other text based games.
The constant complaint most of the die hards have over other text sims is getting information presented in a way that actually makes sense. Beyond, that, we attack the AI of any game and attack it hard.
I probably wrote 25 or 30 posts on how great the DDPB was. I think probably 0 had anything to do with the AI. I've been massively critical of OOTP and it has nothing to do with the UI. Unless a UI absolutely sucks, I won't be paying attention to it.

For single player leagues, I'm sure REX is going to be fine. I don't know how much of an advantage it'll be in multi player leagues. I guess it all depends on the league. As a primarily single player guy, I probably won't care.
Now that I actually have more time available, multi player is tempting though.

Rex is fine, Rex can make all your plays for you if you don't wanna do it. You can also rename the plays you create. You can also create half the plays and let Rex do the rest. There aren't any "cheeser" plays from what I have seen, because there is a way to defend everything. These plays are about using your personnel how you want to use them, that's all. If I have a guy who is great at getting downfield, now I can use him on slants and screens and things like that. I love that. If I have a guy who tears the top off a defense, I can send him on 9 routes a lot.
