In preseason I had some issues. My roster is at 60, but when I tried to sim the first game it told me I had to reduce my active players to 46. What's the point of preseason of at all I can't use those extra players?

You can have 60 players total on your roster for the preseason, but you can only have 46 active players for a game. In your Roster Screen look at Position Distribution to see a more detailed breakdown.

I think he's complaining about the fact that there's any limit to active roster in pre-season.
My best guess is that coding the game for a different pre-season active roster would be unnecessarily complicated for Jim.
I've noticed that even players on the bench have their numbers change during training camp and after week 2, so this does not seem like a huge issue. I'm using the extra slots to check out some promising rookie free agents each year. None of these are players I'd expect to be playing a big role in my team unless I get lucky. Most of them get cut after pre season anyway.

Gotcha. As long as numbers fluctuate based on play that would have occurred in real life I guess it makes it still worth it.
Thanks!

The extra players you get for the preseason are exactly why *I* carry that many. If I could carry more, I would.

A 46/60 preseason -> 46/53 regular season just means you have to cycle your extra 7 inactives if you want to get looks at or develop other players.
To repeat my unsolicited suggestion about preseason: nobody cares about it, let everyone take 70 players into camp and simulate all the preseason rust/development/age/injuries that come with it for every player. Like Summer League, but for everybody!
And then get on to the real games.

Agreed. It's where a number of my SP careers have foundered: sometimes just can't be arsed to go through preseason for the minor benefits it gives
