View Full Version : Were any of these things fixed/improved in v8

Enjoying rediscovering this game after many years. But surprised at some things that are lacking, like:
- First and foremost, a user manual worth a flip. 7's is weak, to be kind. EVERY field in EVERY window should be explained, and EVERY term (excluding generic terms like "FB" obviously, I mean stuff specific to the game and how it works or how you do it etc) and how to do ANYTHING should be easy to find.
- Make most if not all windows resizable. Why that wasn't done from the start I'll never know.
- The other teams/owners/GMs in single play NEVER offer up a trade. Not too realistic. They also tend to be hard to trade with unless you make an offer ridiculously unbalanced in their favor. This should be reasonable more often.
- Almost every player totally totally sucks at KR/PRs. That's really unrealistic. Most WRs at the very least should have at least a modest ability...certainly almost no WR or CB (or even RBs) should have a zero.
- Speaking of zeros, these should be extremely rare in general. This is the NFL. Even big fat DLs can run a LITTLE...even lightweight DBs shouldn't have a zero in "punishing hitter" (well unless it's Deon Sanders lol). etc
- Make interviews more useful. I've used these a number of times and the yellow dashes are almost always exactly the same as the blue ones or very close to it. I should be uncovering more gaps, esp if I have a staff highly rated in scouting/interviews.
- The whole "coaching draft" thing is odd and doesn't make sense. e.g. why is my order the same every time regardless of my record?
There are a few other minor things (like salary cap should be displayed on more windows so I don't have to go back n forth during FA/draft time, some more editing ability would be nice e.g. so I can change the "FOF Bowl" to the "Super Bowl," maybe add more graphics, etc..and how about finally a little sound ability, I'd love to add the MNF theme before the draft for ex), but those are the notable ones I can think of offhand.

Give FOF8 a try.

One other: is the "this position change is permanent" nonsense gone?
Answers appreciated by those in the know.

Yes that was about as useful as corbes' answer. Hilarious too.
I guess nobody knows much about FOF8 yet....

The manual is very detailed. It explains more about what things in the combine mean, what ratings are useful, height/weight, and much more.
The windows are not resizeable, but none (except the in-game simulation window) is forced on top of another, so you can have as many windows open as you want.
In the off-season I average 3-5 trade offers at different times. They are usually for a young player of mine for a draft pick. I also have been able to make trades I find to be very fair involving players for draft picks. Or even a couple to move up in the first round a few spots and giving up a mid round pick in exchange.
Yes, lots of players still have zero ability to return kicks. It's fine, even if you disagree.
The bars still have zeroes from time to time, espcially D-Linemen with pass coverage.
Interviewing doesn't seem that much changed.
The coaching draft order is based on your profit. While different than 'real', it prevents the user from just stacking any coach they want if it were done free agent style. It's a compromise of mechanics.
All-in-all, I am having much, much more fun playing FOF8 than I ever had playing FOF7.

Grasshopper, if you must, you might find some of your answers by re-reading the help file and searching these forums (and you might find that some of your assumptions are wrong).

I have the "FOF2007PlayerGuide.pdf" and even doing a search on the word "combine" produces just 1 result, which tells me nothing. The in-game help (F1) is about as weak.
The windows are not resizeable, but none (except the in-game simulation window) is forced on top of another, so you can have as many windows open as you want.Yeah it's not a huge crisis, but still, annoying at times, esp as it's so easily fixed. I was writing programs with resizable windows in the 90s for petessake. :)

Interviewing doesn't seem that much changed.Darn.
The coaching draft order is based on your profit. While different than 'real', it prevents the user from just stacking any coach they want if it were done free agent style. It's a compromise of mechanics.Well they could compensate by making better coaches cost a lot more, but I see what you're saying.....(that reminds me, are scouts back or do the coaches still do all of that)
All-in-all, I am having much, much more fun playing FOF8 than I
ever had playing FOF7.Is there a short answer why? Why is it so much better?
Anyway, really appreciate an actual answer; wasn't sure I was going to get one.

dude, why don't you just buy FOF8. If you don't like it, get your money back with the Steam refund policy. If you like it, keep it. If you want to know why it's better or not better, there's a thread with over 500 posts by people saying why they like it or don't like it. There are a bunch of reviews on Steam. At this point, it sounds like you're just griping about everything.

I was specifically talking about the FOF8 manual/F1 help guide. Which is what you were asking about.

I'm not buying something before knowing if it's worth it, that's why. I'm not into the hassle of returning something I just bought if possible. If FOF8 is mostly the same with a few little hard-core tweaks here and there (esp if it's about stuff I don't care about much), it's not worth it. Based on screenshots on Steam it would seem so, but it's hard to say just from that.
As for the thread, thanks, but I don't have the time or interest in wading through 500 replies to (maybe) get a few answers to a few questions. Reading reviews on Steam is even less useful, mostly just people going "this is great!"
I'm not griping, I'm trying to see how much this has changed (if at all) in specifics ways and if this is worth my while.

Also......in 8, can you withdraw a contract offer you've made (you can't in 7)?

Yes, in the top right corner of the FA period screen there is a 'withdraw offer' button.

Also, you asked if the CPU makes offers. They do, you just need to pay attention to your email anytime you advance anything, if there is a trade offer or a veteran holdout during any phase, it will say ***IMPORTANT*** on the bottom where it says how many emails you have. However, if you advance again past that, the alert and offer will go away.

you can get trade offers when you enter FA1 and late-FA
edit: you can also get them right after the draft and right after training camp, they're a lot more frequent now in FOF8.

They're also better offers than what we'd get in FOF7.
And the AI definitely made offers to you in FOF7, they weren't terribly frequent and were definitely not very enticing (as a balancing issue, I assume).
