override coaches player selection - help

I'm trying to get my 3rd year quarterback some playing time to reach his potential during exhibition games. Before the game - he is deactivated, so I activate him & deactivate another player. I've tried overriding the coaches depth chart prior to each game under the "Controls - single player options". Then I go to Game Day - offensive personnel and put him in. But when the game starts - it says I haven't set my lineup. I've checked all the other player and can't see any problems. It removes my 3rd year quarterback from the QB options and deactivate him? Any ideas?

Just curious with everyone else's experience with depressed players -- do I go ahead and sign him long term? Is it like a hamstring pull or turf toe -- eventually he pops up "healthy" and there are no long term effects?
