Birth of a LLama

So I'm excited about the online trivia league that has been talked about earlier this summer. I thought I would share my progress in this initial season.

First off, the league is called LearnedLeague. It is a head to head league where you are pitted against one person a day to see who gets the best score. There are six trivia questions each day. Everyone in the LearnedLeague plays the same questions. The key to it is the number of questions answered correctly doesn't matter as much as the points you get from answering them.

Points come from your opponent's idea on how you'll do in a certain category. For the six questions, everyone chooses a defense to give your opponent. You must choose the following numbers...3,2,2,1,1,0
Note that one of the questions will not be counted. And one will be worth 3. So you give the 3 to the question you think your opponent won't know. And the 0 to the one they are going to breeze through.

There are 2 big rules in LearnedLeague ...
1. Though shall not cheat.
You are allowed to only use your brain and possibly pencil and paper. No calculator. No map. No asking friends.
2. Thou shalt not Forfeit.
Play everyday.

Each person is put in a group called a rundle. You play only members from your rundle. And since I'm new, I'm in a rookie rundle.

The other cool thing is next season relies on how you'll do. Relegation and Promotion.. Woohoo.

The title should be explained. People in the LearnedLeague are called LLamas.

A couple of things about my rundle.
1. We have 20 people in it, so I will be playing 6 of them twice.specifically the first 6 I play, I 'll play again.
2. You are in the league of the one who refers you. in fact they have branches so you can see where you came from (game wise). I am in Rundle R Delta Div 2. There is no difference between Div 1 and 2. it just means there were enough in our league and level to have 2 different rookie rundles.

So for Rundle R Delta Division 2 , I have several goals.
GOALS
1. Get more than half the questions. this means by the end of the season I should have at least 75 correct answers.
2. Get put in Rundle B.

There are 6 levels for LLamas. R, which I am in, and A,B,C,D,E. The trivia elite are in A, the next best B, and so forth.
In my particular Rundle, The Top 3 go to Rundle B. The next 4 go to Rundle C. The next 5 go to Rundle D, and the last 8 go to E.
2a) So If I can't make top 3, then I want to be NO worse than 7.
3) I would like to have more correct answers than my referrer. Just because I'm competitive like that. :)
4) I also would like to finish ahead of the other guy that was referred by my referrer.. Again Competition is a healthy thing. :)

So the number in the parentheses is the number of questions correct. The number outside the parentheses is the number of points gotten by getting the questions correct.

Of the six questions, I missed the World History question. The answer was Zapata and I went with the other possible answer I thought of...Villa. My defense was perfect, but only because my opponent got one right. And I thought it was very easy so I hit it with a big 0.

We need a FOFC rundle bad. Then I'd come back. Maybe I'll do this at some point. League would be way more fun if Quik or some else was doing the questions.

Good luck this season though, rooting for ya! Defense is really important, it took me half a season to realize that and once I did, things got way better. Don't give them points on obvious shit, make them earn 'em.

This was a harder group of questions than day 1. There was only one that was an obvious answer to me. However I was able to figure another out. The third was between two possible answers. This time I chose correctly.

+2 on getting half the questions. It's early yet though.

I used to put the 3 on questions where it seemed esoteric or hard or something you doubt they'd know based on their history of answering questions. I'd look at each matchup when you have time to figure that out, and it tended to work okay.

This was a rough batch. I had heard of all the answers, but they were out of my head. And lucky for my opponent, he played a perfect defense and I didn't. I fell to 4th. But I haven't played any of the ones ahead of me yet.

A word on referrals.
New members enter the league at the start of each season. Luckily several members of our fine community have been sharing their referrals with us. Most folks have either one or two. LL75 will start on November 13. Before that, I assume that the LearnedLeague post will be alive and well with people who have referrals to share. Unfortunately I have promised my next season's referrals already. I appreciate y'all paying attention to my little dynasty.

In the rookie rundle, you're flying blind and have to base it mostly on the questions alone. Once you get assigned to a ladder rundle, you can see people's question history and know to pretty much always assign 3 to classical music questions for me.

Today I thought the questions were a little easier than yesterday. I had a moment where I got upset with myself. I immediately said one answer...yellow dog contract...then said no that can't be right. It's yellow dog democrats. I must be wrong. So I just put an answer up to fill that spot..yellow paper... I felt silly.

Day 6-10 are gonna be harder. I'm playing several of the better folks. Including my referring person's other referral.

I think I will probably rejoin next season and do a private rundle so that we can host FOFC-esque games there now that there a bunch of you all playing (which is great.) I don't really enjoy beating everyone else in the game, but playing against familiar folks with our own questions would be a lot more enjoyable.

The next 5 games will be much more difficult than the first 5. The next three matches are against the folks in 5th, 6th, and 1st respectively. This ext one coming up is important anyway (Yes, I realize all the games are important) since it is against the other referral of the one who referred me.

At the 1/5 mark...How stand the goals?
1.half the questions correct? check. I'm at 18 correct after 5 days...at a +3 there.
2. am I in the places for Rundle B? Rundle C? check. The top 3 go to Rundle B and I am currently in 2nd.
3. Am I ahead of my referrer in Correct answers? check. it's close but currently up by 2.
4. Am I ahead of the other referrer ? check both in placement and in total answers! woohoo! points by 2 and Correct answers by 3. ( This could easily change in the next grouping of games!)

So far, I am a little above where I supposed I would be. But as I said, this next group of games is really going to sort out the top pretty well.

This was a HUGE win for me. I suspected all day that he had beaten me. (This was his first non win all season) But as Young Drachma keeps preaching...D Fence! My opponent hadn't gotten a games/sports question yet so I tossed the 3 there. and a 2 on the Theater question. My misses were less obvious to him. the World history and Bus/econ questions made me scratch my head.
I am now in first in my rundle. with 14 points. I'm actually tied with Pollock in points but I am ahead of him in match point differential...(the amount of points I beat my opponents by. )

So I 'm happy where I am at the moment.

There are stats of all types, and since Young Drachma has hit on the importance of defense really hard, I will mention that my Defensive Efficiency (DE) is 0.760.

DE is calculated by the total number of UfPA(Unforced Points Allowed.....or the number of points above what a perfect defense would have given.)that I could have but didn't allow divided by the total number I could have allowed...

Yes you read that correctly. I got what is referred to as an eggroll or as drinking the beer. The one That I almost missed was a question about a diary in 1600s London. I almost put another Samuel...Johnson, but then remembered it was Samuel Pepys. There was also a nice easy one about picking one of the newest MLB expansion teams. I'm very pleased with myself today.

The one I missed no one in this rundle got it. The New York Times Theatre critic...I had zero clue. I had to think about a couple of other answers and one about a seller's monopoly was a wild guess based on assuming it ended in a y and wasn't too many more letters than monopoly. Myself and PollockJ are still tied with 24 points to be in first and second with a Match point differential of 8 in my favor keeping me in first. This will likely expand in the next few days as two of the next three battles are against serial forfeiters. Every point is important though and I will try to get all the answers even on those days.

There was a question that I am embarrassed I missed. The number of elements was asked. They gave the name of the last element that was named last year...(oganesson) We had to get it right within 5. I put 218 like an idiot. the answer?...118.
I feel foolish! The only consolation I have, was that didn't hurt my placement.
Tomorrow, I have an opponent that will answer the questions. So I can't make those kinds of errors then. But on Friday I will face the second person whose forfeited away the season.

Needless to say, I am very happy with this result. I've had some very good results recently. I hope I don't have any let downs. If I do have a slip Pollock could get the win for the Rundle.

1)half the questions correct? oh yes! I am at 58 correct answers so I am at +13 . I am almost to the point where I am averaging 4 questions right a day (-2 on that)

2. will I be in Rundle B? C? I currently have 36 points and if you have more than 30 (3rd) you are in Rundle B next season. Currently the last person going to each rundle is the following:

There is a thing called Battlefield promotions for Rookie rundles.
If you win your R Rundle AND have more TMP than the winner of B Rundle then if there is a spot available you would then be eligible to move straight to A Rundle. Both in R Delta Div 1 and in R Rundle Div 2 there are battles for the titles. Each of the 4 of us has more TMP than the winner in B Delta. So there will be 2 eligible for Battlefield promotion in Delta this season. As a note...It happened in Delta last season.

There's a fun minor league baseball one day today. A one day has 12 questions and you money 5. Each question is worth 15. The money questions if correct, are worth 15 plus the percentage of incorrect answerers for that question.

Also starting Monday are 3 minileagues on a variety of subjects. I'm doing the 1960s one and the movie one that is all images

I was in 2 mini leagues.

I stunk up the jont in the 1960s one finishing 11/12 with a record of 3-8
In the Just Images Movies, I had a record of 7-2-2 and was this close to being a finalist to get to do the championship. (I ended in 3rd)

Since then I have done a couple of one days.

Alabama I got 8 for 88%
Pop Culture Law: I got 7 for 57%
One of these things is not like the others I got 6 for 30 percentile.
Luthur & Lutherans: I got 8 for 71 percentile.

Plus I tested the one day Presidential Runners up. (That was fun)

The first batch of Rookie invitations have been sent, and both of my referrals have signed up.

I can't wait until the start of LL 75 on November 13!

1. Don't get sent down. Bottom 7 get sent to rundle C at the end of this. AVOID!!

3. Beat last season's number of correct answers. ( For information purposes it was 94 correct)
4. Beat both my referrer , the other person referred , and both my referred players. those that I play , I of course want to win that match, but for everyone determined by correct answers)

Well, a B league should be more difficult than the rookie league. Defense wins it as my opponent goes perfect on my defense and I don't. I assume I'll win a few of these close ones too.

A word about A and B rundles...They are made so that there are exactly 26 players in them. So I won't play anyone twice.
Tomorrow, I play one of the three sent down from A Delta. I may need some luck there too.

A big win! my first in B Rundle. moved me to 11th. ( I know. its really still too early for everything to normalize. wins and losses have a big impact on placement this early. ) I thought this group of questions was a bit easier than the last group. hopefully that trend continues tomorrow.

Wow! today's set of questions had me all befuddled! The only question I got was about the Doppler effect guy. (Doppler) I could have saved a tie if I had put songs about cops with Cop rock. BUt no, I saw the song "Let's be careful out there" and went immediately to Hill street blues. D'oh!

THis was another day that I knew the ones I got relatively quickly and the ones I missed I didn't know. (Although I had to think about the Tim Rice question before I realized that Andrew Lloyd Webber didn't write the Lion King)
So I'm currently in 13th with 3 points , record is 1 win, 2 losses, and now 1 tie.

I got an invite (thanks, radii) and am 3-2 after my first week in what I presume is a low-level rundle. I really enjoy the questions that I'm sure I sorta know, but cannot summon up right away. Sometimes the answers come, sometimes they don't, but I really like that little precipice a good question can create.

Quiksand, you're in what's basically a ranking rundle. Next season you'll be in your promotion/relegation rundle. Where everyone is roughly the same level. There definitely have been some good questions this season so far.

This was a good win versus someone who was in A rundle last season and is pretty high in the standings so far this season. I'm now 2-2-1 and in 12th, but everyone is still pretty tight. So I still need to continue to be on my game.

This is the 5 question mark so I can start looking at my goals to see how I'm fairing so far.
So, without further adieu...

1) Am I out of the relegation zone. bottom 7 go to Rundle C
19th place has 4 points and a match point differential of -4. I have 5 points and a MPD of 1. So solidly in the middle of the pack. Any loss would send me hurtling that way though!.
2. Am I in the promotion range...Top 3 go to A.
3rd place has 8 points and a MPD of 5. I have a ways to go to get in that company.
3. Am I on track to beat 94 correct?
I currently am at 18 correct. So assuming the same rate the rest of the season, I'm told I would be at 90 correct, so -4 to that goal it appears.

4. Am I beating my referrer, the other referee with me, and my referals?

It's a mixed bag... Remember I am at 18 correct

Well another loss. that stinks. Especially since that person is in the relegation zone. It just goes to show you that everyone here can beat you on any given day.

Well it is day 10 so time for a goals update!

1) Am I out of the relegation zone. bottom 7 go to Rundle C
19th place has 8 points and a match point differential of -7. I have 10 points and a MPD of 2. So solidly in the middle of the pack.Only a bad loss from getting close to that zone.
2. Am I in the promotion range...Top 3 go to A.
3rd place has 15 points and a MPD of 9. I have a ways to go to get in that company.
3. Am I on track to beat 94 correct?
I currently am at 36 correct. So assuming the same rate the rest of the season, I'm told I would be at 90 correct, so -4 to that goal it appears.

4. Am I beating my referrer, the other referee with me, and my referrals?
I have beaten my referrer in a head to head match... so YAY!
on questions answered, he is at 33, so I am at +3 on him currently (and ahead of him in the standings)
the other person that was reffered at the same time as me is at 32 correct ( and behind me in the standings too, but only by MPD)
both of my referrals are at 32 correct so I'm up by +4 on them.

One of my referrals is on track for Rundle B, the other is currently headed to rundle C.

Quiksand, you're in what's basically a ranking rundle. Next season you'll be in your promotion/relegation rundle. Where everyone is roughly the same level. There definitely have been some good questions this season so far.

So, I ended up in the same ranking rundle as Comey, who blew my doors off. He's being placed in a good spot for next season, me not so much. I finished 13-11-1 and in 18th place... just down into the top spot of the "you're relegated to the worst level" tier.

Suffered some bad luck, I guess... there were only 4 people in the whole group who scored more points than I did (Comey among them) but I either played poor defense or just drew bad opponents for specific weeks.

So, I guess I have to play a season down with the dregs and try to earn promotion back to the real players are. So it goes.

We're less than a week away from the start of LL76.

I ended up in 9th place for the B rundle. So I am pretty fixed here for next season. Neither of my refferrals made it to B. One will be in C and the other would have been in D. ( He's taking the season off however, before hopefully coming back) The other person who was referred at the same time as me, stayed up. I can't wait until Tuesday for day 1

LL76 has started. I'm in BDelta again and figured since we have completed day 5 I would share where I am. BDelta actually has 30 folks in it for some reason, so I won't actually play everyone like I did last season. This year top 6 promote to ADelta while the bottom 7 go to one of the C Rundles we have in Delta.
Currently, I sit in 17th place with a record of 3-2-0 for 6 points. Actually places 8 through 17 have 6 points. However I am dead last in the group of folks with 6 points in terms of MPD ( match point differential). MOst times I get more than half the questions. ( When I haven't I lose) One day was very bad and I could only get 2 out of the 6 questions. Twice I have gotten 5 out of 6. The goals this season are to get 100 questions right. (my high is 95 last season) and to at least not drop. and if I can get to A then all the better. My fellow refferee is also in B, so I definitely want to beat him. And iwant to answer more than anyone I have referred too.

Some of those will definitely be a challenge. But we have to have goals!
