View Full Version : Confidence as a rating

The more I think about football IRL, the more I think there should be a confidence rating (hidden or not) that affects player performance. There are numerous examples of players who are talented, but for whatever reason they lose confidence in themselves, etc, and their on field performance suffers. Or the opposite, a player not as talented as their performance indicates but sometimes can be attributed to being more confident in themselves and their teammates.

Thoughts?

I think it is a good idea. I would call it "form" rather than confidence. I recall this being discussed years ago. I have a feeling Jim has already considered something like this but decided against it. I forget why. Perhaps one of those interviews he did on here years ago.

I don't like the work confidence but the idea is not too bad.

Actually many very good GMs think their are hidden performance-related ratings (I do not subscribe to this theory personally).

The reason I would use "confidence" as the word is because one often hears things such as "his confidence is shaken" or "his confidence is high". But the word doesn't mean as much I guess as the idea of it. It would explain why a QB who has very good ratings could have a bad season or two with a team IRL ... and putting that in the game, if it is not already, would add to the draft. For instance, drafting a QB 1.1 but putting him on a team that has a terrible OL would ruin him IRL more often than it does in the game, and the "confidence" (or whatever word one chooses to use) could be one reason

I'm still waiting for someone to make a football sim crossed with RPG. MLB Power Pros (Jikkyō Powerful Pro Yakyū in Japan) had a great mode like that in which you succeeded or failed at daily tasks and that carried over to your game performance.
