This one's a tough one to search for on google. I can't be specific enough in my description to get the good info.

Anyway...

On the 'standard buttons' bar, i have some icons to the right that do: mail, print, edit, discuss and messenger.

the Edit one is the funny one because on my browser, sometimes it reads "Edit with Microsoft Word" with a pulldown to choose alternative 'edit with's' and sometimes it just says 'edit' and i get no choice HOW it edits.

(the pictures show the diffent icons but not the 'tooltips')

so....

anyone know why this is? I'll likely never use this feature but it bugs me when stuff happens that I don't get.

On the newer versions of Windoze, there's the possibility to set for a specific file type various actions associated with it. For the file type ".htm" or ".html" Word is the most common editor if you have Office installed and no other html editors such as Dreamweaver.

Now, with regedit, you can alter this by entering new values to the ".htm" file type:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm\OpenWithList]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm\OpenWithList\notepad.exe]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm\OpenWithList\WINWORD.EXE]

If you copy the text above and paste it into an empty text document, and rename it "edit_htm.reg" then you can double-click it and get a second option for the edit button in your toolbar, with notepad in addition to Word.

not.... really what i was asking.

I'm more curious as to why it sometimes gives me options and sometimes not.

I've got homesite on my machine but its not picked it up as an HTML/PHP/whatever editor. I may use your tip to add it to the list.

OK, I'll elaborate - the editors are tied to what the file type is, and in the above example we have notepad and Word for the ".htm" file type. Now, it's possible for pages to be either one a large number of file types such as .html, .asp, .php and so on. If you don't have the preferred editors assigned to those file types in the registry then you don't get that choice in the toolbar.

but....

My homepage is set to google.com

When I hit the blue 'E' in my quicklaunch.

I get google with no options for editing, just one 'edit' button and its greyed out.

When I hit 'Home' then i don't see any difference to the page shown, but the edit button is no longer greyed out and now I can choose between a number of editors.
