For the next year or so I am living at home and would very much like to have my computer, located about 50 feet away from the family computer, and on a different floor. I am open to wireless, but am worred that I won't get a strong enough signal to make it work. There is no phone line in my room either (we have DSL). Is there really any practical way for me to get internet?

Spend 50 bucks for a phone guy to install a line in the room.

I've got DSL also. My router has 4 or 5 output jacks so I just ran cable to the desired locations in my home. I can take my laptop all around and access the internet. Works like a charm.

Wireless should work fine.

Hell, my sister just moved over a building, and temporarily left her router in the building next door, on a different floor.

And it worked.

There's probably about 50-100 feet horizontally between the computer and the router, and another 20 feet vertically. Plus two building walls. I think you'd be fine in your house.

But I'm no expert - this is just my single account on the matter.

Just pick up a DSL router from a computer store (or online) and the cable you'll need and you should be in business. Any specific setup info for the 2nd computer would be available from your provider.
