I just wanted to say that I shot my lowest round ever last night in my company league, a 38 !!!!! Woot!!!!
Anyway, I usually shoot in the mid-80's and I have an USGA index of 14.96
I just had to tell someone!
BigJ
Sorry, you've lost me. Was it stroke play? 9 holes? *confused*
Anyway, congrats.

I play golf every sunday (try to lol).
In france, the first index ranking is 53.5 and I am 47.5 (after just one competition, played last november)
I started Golf 3 years ago and it has become a real fun experience, and a great hobby.
I'm now in the mood for doing more competition and trying to lower that index a little...

I have not been able to play much golf here in Turkey except when I go on vacation.
I am about a 5 handicap unless you count the flubs and the penalty shots then it's about a 20 or 25, but who counts those???? :)
Looking forward to playing golf again in a few months when I finally return to the States.

Funny, I just had my best 9 holes ever also - 39. I played 18 holes and didn't warm up or practice putting or anything before the round, so my front 9 score was a 50! That's quite a spread to go from a 50 to a 39.
Anyway, I've only broken 90 3 times and my best score for 18 was an 86, but I've gotten a ton better lately. I've been playing for about 15 years and the last 2 rounds I've played I have 2 of my top 3 rounds ever. I guess that's what happens when you start to play often.
Hopefully I'll get to play this weekend.

My best on 9 is a 43. I just cannot seem to put together a good 18 holes, and usually average somewhere in the mid 90's.
And I'm one of those weirdo left handers, too. :)

I think I might have shot under 100 once.....in nine holes. I've been thinking about trying it out again (just don't tell my wife :)).

I play in a Wed night league, this year we choose a harder course. My best was a 49 for 9 holes. Well, I started subscribing to Golf Digest and learned I should try the interlock grip. Yesterday I tried it and shot a 47! Much better shooting the ball straight and my putting was on. I can't wait to practice this new grip more and more.

Nice job bigj...I am an avid golfer...i usually come in at 85-90 with my best 9 being 39.
I think I have done a 42 on nine holes, but that was a long time ago.

Crap! This golf talk has made me want to play this weekend, but I don't think I'll be able to.

I've been playing once every two weeks :( for my golf league. Nine holes, different course every match. So far, I've shot 41, 42, 43, 48, and 40. At least I got it back in the right direction after my 48, although taking 4 hacks from the weeds tends to lead to higher scores. My best legitimate score for 9 holes was either a 33 or 34 (on a par 36). Played that round at the country club I worked at in about 45 minutes, trying to beat the storms that were rolling in.

I played quite a bit of golf in high school and college and I generally shot in the low 90s with a smattering of 80s here and there. I could post a occassional 9-hole score in the 30s, but I could never put them back to back. I did all of that with a 10-finger grip.
After college, I went a few years playing less than a dozen times a year. I also tend to play with some guys who prefer longer, tougher courses (we usually play at 6,500 yards), so the last few years I have been unable to break 100. I've been very inconsistent. I had one round where I played the first six holes in about 12-over, the next 6-holes one-under and the last six holes 19-over. That will drive you crazy.
I finally relented and have adopted an interlocking grip. I've always been a big hitter (I once drove a 360-yard par 4), but I'm also trying to cut down on my swing so that I'm playing a little more in control. It's difficult to do. I've been working on it in the range, and I have had some success, but not enough.
Good luck with the grip change. From a fundamentals standpoint, it's for the best and should help improve your game in the long run.

Dola -- anybody here recommending any good golf reading? I've tried some of David Ledbetter's tips, but they haven't always sunk in for me. I usually try to skim through Nicklaus' Golf My Way before every round to get my mental game ready. Just curious if anybody else has some books/tips that work for them.

Actually, I recommend watching Tin Cup, and taking the advice of 'grip it and rip it'.
Thinking screws my game up beyond belief.

Fore!
I haven't played in close to a year. I suck anyway. I'm really wild. But that makes for a good story.
About 15 years ago, I was playing when I was home from college during the weekday, so the course was pretty quiet. Teed off and hit a HUGE slice into the next fairway and the ball looked like it was going to hit a lone golfer over there. I called out FORE, but it was a long drive and I'm sure he didn't hear me. So I watch the ball almost plunk him in the head, shoulder my bag and start the long, embarassing trudge over there. I'm head-down, because that rocket came close to nailing the guy.
Well, I get there and the he was a she! I looked a bit closer and, lo and behold, it was my 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Harper. Whom I hated because she was a major bitch. I almost flunked out of 5th grade because of her. Well, she's waiting on me.
She gets a good look of me and the look of recognition starts to cross her face. As she opens her mouth, I cut her off...
"Shit, I missed"
As she stood there dumbfounded, I grabbed my 3 iron and proceeded to hit the most beautiful shot - about 200 yards right to the green. Shouldered my bag, jammed the 3 iron into it and walked off. Never said another word and she never got one out either. Made par, too.

Or another:
I was playing during a weekend and the course was crowded. I'm sitting in the left-hand rough (no trees) on the first hole waiting for the green to clear when I hear the tell-tale sound of a ball landing pretty close to me. Thunk - about 10 yards away - and rolls up close to me. I turn around and look at the tee, but nobody called "fore" and nobody seems to care.
So I shrug, wait for the green to clear, hit my shot and go on...
Get to the second hole, I'm in the fairway this time and again, waiting for the green to clear. THUNK! About 5 yards away this time...so I turn around, make an exaggerated shrug move so they could see it. I'm pretty pissed - getting hit by a golf ball hurts. So I wait, hit my shot into the green and go on...
Third hole. You guessed it...I'm in the middle of the fairway waiting again and about 10 feet away IN FRONT OF ME - THUNK! I was steaming and it appeared the guys on the tee are laughing about it.
So I grabbed a tee from my pocket, teed the ball up and proceeded to wack a helluva good drive right back toward the tee. Sure enough, the ball flew straight and true and - I'm not shitting you - hit the tee box. The foresome scrambled for cover - two dove to the left and two dove to the right. Literally. My partners (all of us students who were drinking the night before) start laughing their asses off.
So one of them comes roaring up in a cart and starts yelling and screaming. With grass stains on his pants. So while he's venting, I take out my 5 iron and calmly lay up short of the green (it's a par 5). I put my iron back and grabbed my wedge and proceeded to start chasing this guy around the fairway. Needless to say, he jumped in the cart and roared off. I think my comment while he drove away as "hit into us again and we're going to kick all of your asses".
He did tell the course marshall, but the pro knew us, so we didn't get booted.

Yes, the 10 finger grip was too inconsistant and I started to lose interest in golf, my friends were getting better and better and I was getting worse. I still can't hit my drives that far with this new grip, but my irons are deadly.

I played this weekend at a Bobby Jones course nearby and shot an 87!
I'm liking this game more and more.
