I ave several player in the final year of their contracts, nd I would like to renegtiate with them before allowing them into free agency. My problem is I don't have alot of money to do it with, and will ned o release some players. My question is this: Can I only renegotiate with these playes During the season, or can I wait until the year is over and then renogotiate. The reason I ask, is because I don't want to rel;ease players who can still help me win now. So when exactly will thse players become FA's after I've moved on the the coach/scout hiring period? or the Franchise tag/stadium period? When will the game no longer allow me to renegotiate with MY players who are due to become Fre Agents?

You can negotiate until the Super Bowl is over. Once that game is over, the season ends and you can't make any roster moves.

Sometimes, re-signing a player from your roster DURING the season can help you win some bucks over trying to sign him the following offeseason.

Also, offering a contract extension to a injured player is usually a good means to get him for cheaper that his real worth.
(the guy will want to secure himself a roster sport for next year while injured and uncertain about his own future so he will be more willing to accept a lesser offer)

Would I be cheating the A.I in this instance:

I am knocked out in te second round ofthe playoffs, but the sper bowl hasn't been played yet, so I release all my high priced flunkies in order to free up salary to renegotiate with players want to keep who are asking for some big numbers. I do just that in order to keep them from entering free agency. Does the A.I. do this once the season ends?

Players "earn" a portion of their salary each week, so the "savings" from a release decrease as a season wears on.

By week PS2, your high priced flunkies should have been paid for the season already. Releasing them this late should not help.

yes, it may not help my balance sheet, but it would free up cap room wouldn't it?

It's 2/3rds through a season. I want to re-negotiate some of my contracts.
I want to pay the players at their current salary but increase their pay for next season. How do I do that?
When I try, the negotiating screen keeps adding what I'm offering to the current year salary.
But I want to pay him at his current salary this year, and raise his pay next year.
Is there a way to do that?

Thanks.

PSU:

Yes, it does free up cap room. I'd say that it isn't cheating if the AI does it as well. However, upon inspection, none of the AI teams cut anyone at that point, so in a sense it would be cheating the AI.

Sky- take a look at a season's transaction log. Seems to go like this :

Retires
scout and coach hiring
renegotiated contrats (which I am attempting to do myself)
released players (again same for me)
trades
Franchise players
Unrestricted FA signings

my point is this: I don't beleive a human player can renegotiate contracts when the A.I does. It also appears the AI is releasing players in order to do so.(although I'm ot sure whether the renegotiations are 1st, or whether the releases are) If this is the case, maybe it isn't cheating the A.I Can you confirm one way or another?

I think I figured it out. The A.I is re-negotiatng contracts for THAT particular year, not the year I had just moved on from.

It is not supposed to.
