I don't think they had a choice financially. It was a given he had to go and everybody knew it. No real chance for hardball there. That's the biggest thing I miss about CM02/03, man was it fun to run the Leeds FC. Now, it's just depressing.

Not that I am a fan of Leeds but it was just a lot of fun to use them in CM.

In 02/03 cm3 Leeds was a freaking MONSTER. good amount of cash, great roster.

Mills - Woodgate - Ferdinand - Harte
Bowyer - Keane - Kewell - Bakke
Smith/Fowler - Viduka/Bridges

Beat ManU for my second straight Champions League Cup:

Looks like Leeds truely got shafted. Last week Liverpool offered 7 million pounds for Kewell, but Kewell's agent said they'd turn down the move and wait a year till he could leave for free on a Bosman unless they got a 2mil cut of the money. Leeds think 5mil is better than zero in a years time so agree, but now mysteriously Liverpool drop their offer to 5mil. Looks like Kewell and his agent have used their "give us 2 mil or we'll veto the deal" on both sides.

Leeds United look truely screwed, financially a mess and their players leaving for way less than their value(except Ferdinand), it's looking like they'll be heading for another run in the lower divisions. As somebody who used to like Leeds in the 70's (they had Harvey, Bremner, Lorimer, the Gray brothers, Jordan, McQueen, all good Scottish internationals) this makes me a bit sad.

I've always disliked Liverpool too, Scouse gits.

I think I'll go give Leeds United a try in CM4.

Leeds is now in total rebuilding mode, I'm sure they are going to dump off as much salary as they can, hope to stay in the Premiership for 2 or 3 years, then try again on a somewhat fiscally responsible level. Risdale did a good job of running that team into the ground chasing European dreams: the perfect example of how not to run a club in today's European market.

Care to explain what happen, and how to do it right?

Liverpool got a steal on Kewell at 5 million pounds. Leeds is headed for a relegation battle. I was never impressed with Leeds even when they had the best young team in the Prem. I just wish Kewell would have gone to Man Utd and not Liverpool. 'pool have to be favorites for the Prem title with this move.

Do they? I don't see it. Instead of having no creative wide players, they now have one. It's hard to handicap the Premiership until Man U, Arsenal, Newcastle, and Chelsea are done shoppng, but I'm not convinced that Kewell is worth a four-place jump. Man U and Chelsea will still have better defences; Man U, Arsenal, and maybe Chelsea and Newcastle will still have better offences.

kewell is a trouble maker. i am not sure he'll help liverpool much, more cause disruption. he seems to miss a lot of games too.

Well, they L'pool still paid the 7-8 million, the difference just went to the agent instead of Leeds. Not sure he's a 'steal' at that price, but at least we finally got some width (looking forward to seeing him and Riise hook up on the left side). BTW - I offered, 12MM for Kewell in CM4 and got turned down, so by that measure maybe it was a steal.

I also don't think Liverpool are the favorites this year, unless they play more like they did two years ago. Last year, there were alot of holes in the team that one player alone can't fill (although Finnian should help the defensive depth tremendously). And we still have 20 million+ pounds wrapped up in two stirkers (Heskey/Diouf) who scored about 10 goals combined last year. Ugh.

I never got that impression...but since you're over there, I'll defer to you...what's this troublemaker bit about?

Didnt he pretend to snort the sidelines chalk like he was snorting coke, or was that someone else?

What happened was, he went out and spend millions (most likely overspending along the way as well) and basically mortgaging the club's future, putting all hope for success on the back of making the Champions League on a continual basis. Admittedly, at the time, they were looking good, as they reached the quarters/semis (don't remember which) of the Champions League, but didn't qualify for it for the following season. The thing Risdale did wrong was assume that Champions League revenue would be there to help pay the debts he was building up. Meanwhile, TV revenues in England were dropping dramatically, so that's two sources of revenue they had been counting on, but never had in the first place, that were gone. Basically they've gone into a freefall, and what you see now is the result of that.

As for how to do it right, if I knew for sure I would probably be over there doing it myself ;) But, just like you would hope to see here in the U.S. in baseball and hockey, a little fiscal responsibility, and not spending more than you have, is a good way to start.
