Life in the Fast Lane: The Car Thief Mini-Dynasty

I've been playing this game quite a bit in the past week, over such games as the new improved FOF and Port Royale. I'll get back to those, but for now this is a fun little addictive game from Maxima Games (http://www.maximagames.com/index.html).

The plot: You're a person with limited skills (except for one specialty), a little money, and few tools, but you want to make your living on the streets anyway. There are opportunities to make money by picking pockets, and breaking into homes, stores, and even banks. But the main money making opportunity, as befits a game called "Car Thief" is by stealing cars. The cars range from scooters that will barely bring $200, to exotic sports cars that, when fully worked on, bring over $200,000. The more valuable cars are USUALLY better protected, but not always. Gotta love it when they leave the keys in the ignition...

You start in one of several cities (Philadelphia, Boston, Miami, Kansas City, Houston, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles). There are training facilities and stores in every city where you can improve skills (for a price) and buy useful goodies (for a price), respectively. You have skills in several categories such as lockpicking, driving, and electronics that determine whether and how well the dirty deeds get done. They can be improved by training, through some equipment, and through experience. The most important rating (other than health) is the respect rating, which determines what kind of things you can do.

You start out owing lots and lots of money to the loan shark, who needs to be paid in increasing amounts every 30 days. You win by paying the loan shark off and making a final escape to an exotic location. You lose by dying or getting arrested three times.

Ah, enough of this. Let's get to the backstory.

BACKSTORY: The boss called me into office last Friday. He had a sour look on his face. I knew the news wouldn't be good.

"You're a technical whiz kid," the boss explained. "But times are hard and business is down. I'm gonna have to let you go."

I was stunned by the news that my precious job vanished just like that. But I think that perhaps this is for the best. My friend Tudy says I should put my electronics skills to good use hotwiring cars around Philadelphia and selling them to him (he's a car dealer). I was never much of an office person anyway, so I decided to take my chances in the underworld. Will I succeed? Or will I die trying?

NUTS & BOLTS: I start the game at normal level, with an electrician speciality. My ratings are as follows:

Day 11 - The first 10 days went pretty well. My cash is up over $27,000. I even picked up the acquaintance of a cop who's on the take. He's telling me there's going to be a raid in Philly tomorrow, so I'm going to leave town for awhile. But I'll be back.
Day 21 - I fly to Houston to meet with Wicked Joe, the loan shark. I make my first payment of $29,000 and he seems somewhat appreciative.
Day 30 - I've survived! I end the month with $43,347 and a Honda Accord. My respect is up to 20, meaning I can now break into houses.

Day 34 - Oh boy. Trying to steal a Mercedes and took too long. A cop comes walking by and eventually they sent a squad car and motorcycle after me as I tried to escape. They slapped me in the pokey for a night. They think they taught me a lesson. But I've only hardened my resolve to beat the system.
Day 36 - Yarrrgh! The local gang is trying to put me out of business! They've got guns, and I've got... a baton. No way I'm going to win this, so I try to escape. The good news is I do. The bad news is that I'm heavily damaged and lose respect. They'll pay for their rough treatment, one day.
Day 40 - I try to make a big score by stealing a Ferrari, but some nosy pig gets in my way. She calls the big boys and the chase is on. They're too good for me and I have to surrender. That's two times in jail; once more and I lose. I also lose respect.
Day 48 - This is a big day: I finally train myself to a 47 rating in shooting and buy myself a Magnum Baby Eagle. Take THAT, dirty pigs!!
Day 56 - Tried to get greedy and take on another Ferrari. The cops surrounded me as I tried to escape. They poked several holes in me, and I was dead even before I hit that tree.

This mini-dynasty is over, but I think I'll try again. Watch this space for details.

Day 13 - Did all right in KC, ended up with over $20,000. But it's getting too hot around here.
Day 28 - Bouncing around between KC, Houston, and Vegas. I have enough to pay the first payment to my loan shark, with about $10,000 left over. Not bad.

I end the month with $10,725 and a Pontiac Bonneville waiting for me in Houston (I hope). My respect is up to 19.

It should be. In fact, I'm pretty sure it is.

In order to sell a car, you have to be out of it. Press the "get out" button if that's there. Then press the "sell" button.

As you can tell if you read the logs closely, I meet all kinds of interesting people in my travels. Dealers in stolen cars from other cities, crooked cops, and several kinds of criminal specialists. Once I get my reputation high enough, I can add a partner. Eventually, if my respect gets high enough, I can have up to three others working with me.

Anyway, on with my life.

Day 37 - Tried to steal a Dodge Ram in KC. I underestimated how much time it would take, and how much heat was still there. A security guard came, then a cop on foot, then another security guard, and then a bike. They shot me to within an inch of my life and they put me in the slammer. Not the worst thing - the heat is completely off me now.
Day 39 - Went to Houston to pick up my car and see what opportunities there were to make a little cash. I saw this mansion in an out-of-the-way place that looked ripe for the picking. Unfortunately, it took a long time to jimmy the lock and a policeman caught me in the act. I barely escaped. No damage! Whew! Over $17,000 from this haul. But how much do you need when you're dead?
Day 44 - Tried to break into another mansion in KC when some security guard stopped by and started asking questions. The wad of bills stuck in my mouth prevented me from answering. He called the cops and the race was on, again. I didn't make it out alive.

Day 5 - Aw man, another sweep. Let's see if I can get away. With two bikes and a squad car, they quickly surrounded me. As this was my first arrest, they let me off with a night in jail and a stern lecture. Like that's going to do any good.
Day 20 - I'm hearing my name mentioned too often in the underworld circles. Time to head to Kansas City.
Day 22 - Trying to steal a juicy AC Superblower when some jive turkey cop comes strolling by. He's not buying my excuses, so I take off running. More cops swarm to the scene, they start shooting, and the next thing you know they're slapping the cuffs on me. Two down, one to go.
Day 26 - Down on my luck, and bucks, I notice another AC Superblower in great shape. Keys in the ignition! Yum! A $43,400 haul!
Day 27 - I head to Miami and pay off Wicked Joe. The debt seems to stretch endlessly, but I'll eventually pay it off. If I survive.
Day 30 - Still hanging out in Miami, though I'll be leaving soon. I have $15,645 in cash, the Pontiac Grand Prix I'm driving now, and I own the Saturn SL2 that's waiting for me in Houston. Respect is up to 19.

Day 33 - The police spotted my car as I was on my way from Houston to Kansas City. Their cars and bikes quickly swarm on me as they pepper me and my car with bullets. They surround me, cuff me, and send me away to prison. Game over.

As you can tell, these games play out VERY quickly. Let's try something a little different, shall we?

I've decided to take another tour as a locksmith. When I first started playing this game, I was a locksmith and moderately successful. Here are my ratings:

I'm starting off in Houston again.

Day 8 - Stole a $48,000 Ferrari! Yes, the keys were left in the ignition. That always makes me smile.
Day 13 - Tried to steal a Honda Accord. The alarm was one of those fancy jobs that gave me fits. This squad car pulls up and tries to ask what's up. I start running. After a long, long chase, they finally blew the tire out and surrounded me. Jerks. The good news is that the heat is off and thanks to my fancy moves, my driving skill shot up to 31.
Day 15 - Another day in the neighborhood. I see another Ferrari lying around. It took a little long to get it started, and this female oinker started sniffin' around. I gave her the slip easily enough, then outran several of Houston's finest and some security officers. I make my escape and best of all, no damage! This one sold for $130,800.
Day 19 - Deivery with a smile: Dino had a customer that was hot for a Mitsubishi Eclipse, so I search all over LA and KC looking for one. Finally found it in KC and brought it to my boy. He paid me 40 large for it, so I guess it's all good.
Day 20 - Nosy rent-a-cop tried to bug me while I was minding my business trying to turn off the alarm on my Audi A6. Well, it was gonna be mine after I stole it. I got away.
Day 21 - Spent some of my extra money making two payments to the loan shark, and improving my pickpocketing and driving skills. Dino also loaned my $55,000 at no interest because he likes my business so much. I'll have to remember to pay him back.
Day 22 - A special agent interrupted my work of acquiring a Mercedes C Class. I escaped with minimal damage.
Day 23 - Dino tells me he really needs a Lamborghini Diablo for a client of his. He also has heard a rumor there's one in Boston. I'm tempted because he'll pay really well, but those cars are a mother to steal. Unless the keys are in the ignition, of course. Decision made - I'm heading to Beantown. Wish me luck...
Day 25 - I don't know if you guys helped out, but Lady Luck is shining on me. The Laborghini was right where he said it was. And the keys were in the ignition. Cake. Now if I can just get out of town without getting discovered...
Day 27 - Dino offers me $204,000 for the Diablo. Sold!!!! Wicked Joe is still here, so I make two more payments. No rush on paying off Dino; I've still got almost a month.
Day 29 - Tried to steal another Audi, but the alarm tripped me up. Some weekend joe waved a baton in my face, but I wasn't scared. That dick he called, now he scared me a little. He nicked my neck, but I got away.
Day 29 - Oh man, this just isn't my day. The leader of the local branch of the Crips wanted to take me on. A little more damage to my chest and my car, but I got through. Ain't nothing going to bring me down, you hear!!!!

With that I'll stop for the month. I've got $49,185 and a Pontiac Firebird. My respect is only up to 15 because that run-in with the gang cost me some. Here's the log:

Jeesh, because of you, HB, I had to pick this one up. On the "easy" level, I'm a criminal mastermind.I retired in the bahamas with over 20 mil. On "normal" the longest I've gone is about 115 or so days before getting gunned down. Someday I'll figure out the secret and move on to the next level. :)

Yeah, easy is pretty easy. I haven't fooled around with it much.

On normal, I've actually retired twice - once with $100k and once with twice that. I probably could have survived both games a lot longer, but I wanted to get on the high score board.

The secret, such as it is, is to get a partner as soon as you can. Ideally, he or she should be able to drive fast, but anything else they can do is helpful. You should be able to get a partner sometime in month two, if you survive that long. That's not easy.

I've done a little fooling around on hard level, and it's definitely tougher still. Never retired, never came close. I think I made it past 30 days once in half a dozen or so tries.

Anyway, for the other three people reading this thread, sorry about the delays, but I kept getting killed. I'll finish out the career I had started above, then I'll tell you about two other tries that went a little better.

Day 31 - Trying to hotwire a Dodge Ram when this doughnut eating fool got a little too curious for his own good. I shook him, but a few blocks later the GPS in the trunk let them know where I was anyway, so I dumped it.
Day 37 - The cops are getting suspicious again. Time to blow this joint and head for KC.
Day 38 - In KC I was attempting to shut off the alarm on an AC Superblower when this squad car came cruising by. He called his buddies and this time I couldn't get away. I slam into a guard rail and that ended my life.

Who says crime was easy?

Day 15 - I'm off to a good start. I've stolen several cars and have about $22,000. But opportunities are getting tougher to find. I think I'll head for La La Land.
Day 17 - Cowboy called me to say that he's got a buyer for a Lincoln LS and there happens to be one in LA. I smell an opportunity.
Day 18 - Got the Lincoln, spent the day fixing it up so no one will recognize it and am driving it to Vegas tonight.
Day 19 - Cowboy buys it for $20,200, about 3 times the normal price. I'll accept that. But for now it's back to LA.
Day 20 - Earned over 5 grand pickpocketing. I love LA!
Day 23 - Ed at the LAPD is warning me about a sweep tomorrow. I'd better get out of town for awhile.
Day 25 - I'm in Kansas City. Not much to see here, so I'll be moving on to Boston to meet Wicked Joe.

BTW, thanks HB for the heads up on this game. I picked it up and played around with it this weekend. I haven't made it past the 2nd month yet. The gangs keep coming after me, so I think I probably need to move to another town faster than I have been. Good luck with the latest career.

Bee, I've found you can check the gang's threat level by clicking on them. It shows the probability of attack from 0-100%. If you see more than one gang, they all have the same probability.

The best success I've had so far is with guys starting with high 80s lockpick/30s electronics.

Day 32 - Stole a Lincoln LS and thought I saw a glimpse of blue. Must have been my imagination.
Day 38 - Back in Vegas to try to sell off the Lincoln. In my spare time I decided to rob a house. The haul was nice, but there's definitely a squad car waiting for me. They chased me, shot me up, and finally surrounded me. But it's OK, it's only my first offense. My lawyer will get me back out on the street in no time.
Day 42 - Was successful at stealing a Volvo, but one of Vegas' finest is running after me. I think I can outrun him, but we'll see. I did. Phew! Close call there.
Day 50 - Tried one more job before I was due to head out of town, but the blinkin' alarm went off on the Honda Accord and attracted one of the foot patrol. Got away. Must be a signal.
Day 54 - Knocked off the houses of three "reality" "stars" in three days in LA, collecting over $55,000 in cash and fenced goods.

Day 54 - I hire Bob. He's an ace driver and a relative bargain at $350 a day. His skills are as follows:

Day 55 - This is Bob's first big test. We took a little long to steal a Dodge Ram out of a parking lot and we get confronted by a security guard. I expect this to be easy for him. And it was.
Day 59 - Both Vegas and LA seem a little hot now, so we'll set up a new base in Miami - dealer Oso is from there. But first I have to go to Boston to make another payment.
Day 61 - After a pit stop in Boston, we get a message that Oso would like a Mercury Villager for one of his clients. It would make a good arrival present for him, so we decide to stop in Philly and get one for him.
Day 65 - Oso is only offering $7,600 for the Villager. Not really worth it for all the work we put into it, but we accept it anyway and hope he makes it up to us.
Day 66 - Second day in the new city and we're befuddled by the circuitry on a Mitsubishi. Another rent-a-cop wants to spoil our day, but we don't let him.
Day 72 - Another job that went too slow as we tried to take on an AC Superblower. Cop came strolling toward us. She called for backup and the chase was on. Minimal damage as we got away.
Day 74 - Tried something new - towing away a Volvo. Darned cop car caught us, but we escaped.
Day 76 - Tried to tow away a Ferrari, but some guy in blue interrupted us. We finish up and quickly jump in the truck. The cop and his buddy tried to catch us, but we were too fast for him. High fives all around as we stole the F40 from right under their noses. The Ferrari yields us $116,200, so I guess it was worth it. The tow truck was all riddled with bullets, so we sold it.
Day 78 - The leader of the Miami branch of the Bloods is jealous of us, so he decides to take us on. We escaped but got hit several times so we had to go to the hospital to rest up. We decide to bail on Miami and head home to Vegas. I've heard things have settled down there.
Day 84 - Got away after trying to steal a Lincoln LS.
Day 86 - Too hot in Las Vegas - literally and figurately - so we decide to give LA another try.
Day 88 - We make the third payment to Wicked Joe, who happens to be in town soaking up the sun and enjoying the actress wannabes. Bob and I try our best to enjoy ourselves, but we work too hard to really enjoy things.

I'm interrupting this dynasty thread to announce the big score I had. After zillions of tries (well, actually around 50 or so), I finally won again. This time Chivo, Nadine, and I retired to Los Cabos with $631,057. That may not sound like much, but the Yankee dollar goes a long way down there.

I started with fairly balanced skills and I was lucky to avoid most gang fights and police sweeps. I only got collared once. Here are the rest of the stats from my 299 day rampage:
