About time to start up a dynasty report.

I'm playing NCAA Football 2004, by EA Sports. I'm using the Blacklover Rosters (see http://www.maddenmania.com/forums), which is a renaming of the default EA rosters with actual names. No modifications for injuries, added freshmen, departures for the NFL, etc. have been made.

I'll be playing as the coach of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The settings are as follows:

Strategy Information:
Playbook: Run and Gun

Quarters: 8 minutes <I>-> 9 minutes</I>
Injuries: On
Game Fatigue: On
Campus Challenge: On
Recruiting Assistance: Off

Skill Level: All-American

<CODE>
Sliders:
...............Hum...CPU
QB Acc.........10...14
PassBlk........8....8 <I>->10</I>
WR Ctch........12...12
RB Abil........12...14 <I>->15</I>
RB Blk.........8....20

Aware..........5....20
KnockD.........10...15
Ints...........8....8
BrkBlk.........12...14
Tackle.........10...10
</CODE>

I'll probably be modifying these as I go, although I like to only change sliders during the breaks in between seasons.

Hopefully by doing my dynasty online like this, it'll give people a chance to comment (and add in strategy, suggestions, etc) for NCAA 2004; and hopefully I'll actually keep a run going rather then petering out after a couple of years.

Kevin

Week Two Action:
Georgia Tech at BYU

A rough game, characterized by turnovers, stellar defensive play in the Georgia Tech secondary, and injuries. The tone for the game was set early, as the first three BYU drives end in interceptions - the second of the three returned 52 yards by Jonathan Cox for a 7-0 Georgia Tech lead. By the midpoint of the first quarter, however, our starting QB (Bilbo) has been knocked out of the game (out one week). Not much loss in talent as the second-string A.J. Suggs comes into the game; however it does take the option out of our repetoire. BYU ties the score on the last play of the first quarter - catches the defense napping, as the Cougars pull a fake field goal, hitting a 33-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at seven. Suggs leads a solid Georgia Tech drive - the only offensive highlight of the game - in the second quarter, finishing with a 31-yard touchdown to Jonathan Smith. The Tech defense comes up with a big sack in the end zone to stake a 16-7 lead; but BYU answers with a drive to cut the score to 16-14 before the half. On the ensuing drive, Suggs is knocked out of the game as well, and we're down to running our third string quarterback, Brian Camp.

Halftime: GT 16, BYU 14

The start of the half sees an outstanding kick return by RS-Freshman I-Perfection Harris bringing Tech into scoring range again, but the Yellow Jacket offense can only muster a field goal to expand the lead to 19-14. Even worse, HB Tony Hollings is knocked out for the rest of the game, and the Tech offense is hanging on by their fingernails. On consecutive drives, BYU reaches the red zone, but a missed field goal keeps the score at 19-14 until, with three minutes remaining in the game, CB Dennis Davis picks the fourth GT interception of the game out of thin air, and returns the ball 91 yards for the touchdown. That 91-yard return sets a yardage record; and provides the final 26-14 margin.

Week Three:
Auburn at Georgia Tech

A back and forth game, defensive struggle. The best way to describe this game is by the third-down conversion statistics - Auburn ended 2-11, while Georgia Tech was 6-15 - although that number was 2-11 midway through the fourth quarter. Auburn jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in this game on their second drive - capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run by Cadillac Williams. An exchange of field goals late in the first half lead to a halftime score of 10-3, Auburn.

Halftime: Auburn 10, GT 3

The second half saw Damarius Bilbo leave the game again due to injury; although he would have been able to return if the game went to overtime. His replacement was Brian Camp - with A.J. Suggs still on the bench. Camp turned in a very solid performance, and his entering the game was the turning point for the Jackets. With Tech still trailing 13-6 in the fourth quarter, Camp began leading an extended drive downfield; based on the three-yards and a cloud of dust. Behind second-team All-American Nat Dorsey, Tech managed an 80-yard drive to a 1-yard Tony Hollings touchdown run with 2:52 remaining in the game. Auburn got the ball back, but was forced to punt away. With the ball at midfield and under a minute - Camp ran a perfectly-executed play-action pass and threw only his second pass of the game. Jonathan Smith made a beautiful 38-yard reception, getting inside the ten yard line. With the Atlanta crowd on their feet, Tony Hollings took the ball in for the winning score two plays later. The Jackets improve to a surprising 2-0, while preseason top 10 Auburn falls to 0-2.

Week Four:
Georgia Tech at Florida State

Another good game between these schools. Georgia Tech starts slow again, staying in this game by virtue of a pair of missed Florida State field goals; still down 14-0 and 21-7 late in the first half after a 22-yard Rix to Thorpe connection. One big problem for Bilbo has been slow starting - he started 0-7 last week, and 0-8 this week (then went 9 of his last 10).

Halftime: Florida State 21, Georgia Tech 7

The second half started with Tech threatening to get back in the game. Nate Curry got all of his yards in the second half; and started them off with a 71-yard touchdown catch one minute into the half off an option pass. Florida State responds with a Rix-to-Dean connection; but Hollings gets into the end zone for the second time (and a 28-21 deficit) with under a minute in the quarter. The fourth quarter sees a valiant effort by the Yellow Jackets - Jonathan Cox stops two FSU drives with interceptions; including one in the back of the end zone. The first leads to a short chip-shot field goal to pull within four at 28-24. Then with under one minute left, Georgia Tech has the ball first and ten at the Florida State thirteen yard line - but a fourth-and-two run up the gut was stopped, and the Seminoles avoid their second conference loss.

Final: Florida State 28, Georgia Tech 24

Also taking a look at the playcalling I'm doing. I've been working a lot - more than I had expected - out of the I-Formation, and as such, am moving out of the Run & Gun playbook. I'll be working with the Oklahoma State playbook for the moment - gets rid of a few of the Shotgun formations I haven't been using, and gives me an extra offset-I formation.

Week Six Action:
Georgia Tech at Vanderbilt

Not too much to be said about this game, either. A low-scoring contest where both teams worked hard to establish the running game, and ate up a ton of clock doing so. Jonathan Smith was the first on the board with an 18-yard touchdown catch late in the first quarter. Vanderbilt tied the game in the second, and we went into the half knotted up.

Halftime: Georgia Tech 7, Vanderbilt 7

The second half was turned around by a gutsy call - a fourth-and-three play at the Vanderbilt 30-yard line was audibled by Damarius Bilbo into a play-action fly down the sideline to Smith - good to get inside the five, and the first real entry to the red zone in the second half. Tony Hollings went in for his first of two touchdowns; and Tech never trailed from that point on.

Georgia (3-1, 1-1)
Tennessee (2-2, 1-1)
Florida (3-2, 1-1)

Week Seven Action:
#11 North Carolina State at #18 Georgia Tech

A great game, televised regionally. The game was back and forth, led by Tech most of the way; State kicked off the scoring with a field goal on their first drive. The key play there was a 66-yard option run by T.A. McLendon. The Jackets got onto the scoreboard on the first play of the second quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run by Tony Hollings; and led 14-10 at the half.

Halftime: Georgia Tech 14, North Carolina State 10

The second half was back and forth. State took the lead on a McLendon touchdown; and added a field goal to lead 20-14 late in the third. With Bilbo knocked out of the game (again) for Tech, A.J. Suggs led a drive downfield, completing a 22-yard pass to Nate Curry with under a minute to play in the third quarter. Tech led for most of the fourth, 21-20 - and put up some solid defensive stops on their own half of the field before North Carolina State finally drove down for the go-ahead score with 3:38 to play. Still, we weren't dead yet - a 4th-and-13 from midfield with two minutes to play turned into a fake punt pass completion inside the thirty yard line; but Suggs broke the hearts of the Yellow Jacket faithful again as he (I) rushed a pass into an interception with under two to play. The Georgia Tech defense had the opportunity to get the ball back, but McLendon was too much; and the Wolfpack managed two third-and-short conversions to run the clock out.

Final: North Carolina State 26, Georgia Tech 21

Week Eight Action:
#24 Georgia Tech at Wake Forest

Some things learned during this game: First, the new play-action animation in NCAA 2004 is outstanding. You want to see this in action, play a game against Wake Forest, Air Force, or another of the option-based teams. I can't count how many I tackled (and tackled HARD) the runner only to find out the quarterback still had the ball. Second, be very wary of putting in your second team defense for extended periods of time. Thirdly, I think Damarius Bilbo has begun to turn a corner for us. We exchanged touchdowns in the first drives of the game - Bilbo was perfect for the first quarter, no dropped or missed passes - and the game was certainly over by the half.

Halftime: Georgia Tech 27, Wake Forest 7

The second half was split by the first and second team defense, and the second team got clobbered. Now, I've given all my second teamers a good bit of playing time; the biggest difference between them and the first team is the Awareness rankings. This comes hugely into play against option teams, and Wake ran all over us late. Still, we built up a large enough lead to withstand; but it's something to watch out for later in the season.

Final: Georgia Tech 37, Wake Forest 24

Leading Passers
GT QB Damarius Bilbo 16-23, 238 yards, 1 TD, 1 Int
WAKE QB Cory Randolph 17-25, 254 yards, 1 TD

Leading Rushers
GT HB Tony Hollings 28-155 yards, 2 TD
WAKE HB Cornelius Biggs 8-49 yards

I noted above how Wake was running all over - they ended the game with 5 guys who each had 6 or more carries; for a total of 124 yards; the majority of that in the late third and fourth quarters. So it may not have been quite as bad as I thought, but it seemed it.

Leading Receivers
GT WR Nate Curry 5-134 yards, 1 TD
WAKE WR Chris Davis 4-99 yards, 1 TD

Outstanding Defensive Players:
GT FS James Butler 9 Tackles (1 TFL)
GT DE Eric Henderson 6 Tackles (2 TFL), 1 Sack
WAKE FS QUinton Williams 10 Tackles
WAKE SS Caron Bracy 10 Tackles (1 TFL), 1 Sack

Week Ten Action:

#6 Maryland at #22 Georgia Tech : <B>Game Of The Week</B>

The Thursday night game of the week looks to be a good matchup. Shows what I know. I suppose this is the wakeup call for Tech - we find ourself down 35-0 in the first quarter. Bilbo regresses, can't get a thing going; Jonathan Smith fumbles twice after big pass plays, and Suggs plays the entire second half.

Halftime: Maryland 38, Georgia Tech 3

I suppose we did well to keep it under 60. And hey, if you don't count the first and third quarters, we win 10-6! Oh, and did I mention that Maryland's star HB (Bruce Perry) was knocked out for the game in the first series?

I suppose a rundown of the scoring is in order:

UMD 2 yard run by Allen - 6:16 1st
UMD 23 yard run by Crawford - 4:14 1st
UMD 27 yard run by Allen - 2:20 first
UMD 20 yard run by Allen - 2:05 first
UMD 33 yard run by Maldonado - 0:32 first
GT 41 yard field goal - 6:44 second
UMD 43 yard field goal - 0:53 second
- Halftime -
UMD 17 yard pass from McBrien to Suter - 5:59 third
UMD 1 yard run by Maldonado - 4:02 third
UMD 45 yard field goal - 0:50 third
UMD 42 yard field goal - 6:57 fourth
GT 19 yard pass from Suggs to Smith - 5:23 fourth

Week Thirteen Action:

North Carolina at #25 Georgia Tech

Things start up worrisome, as we stall on our first drive, and UNC drives right down the field for us. But we turn to the redshirt-freshman I-Perfection Harris (love that name), and he brings the kickoff back 96 yards for a touchdown and a 7-7 game. The offense still never really gets going - Bilbo throws for a ton of yards in the first half, but turnovers keep us from doing much.

Halftime: North Carolina 10, Georgia Tech 7

The second half gets dangerous, as UNC extends their lead to 10 points, but a 30-yard touchdown run by Hollings is followed up Carolina fumbling the kickoff return. We bring it in for seven, and never trail again. It leaves me to wonder after this game, and UNC playing some other teams close - why have they not won a game yet?

Final: Georgia Tech 37, North Carolina 27

Week Fourteen Action:

#22 Georgia Tech at #9 Virginia

Things look bleak for the Yellow Jackets on the first drive of the game - the Caveliers come in averaging over 600 yards of offense a game (second in the country), and take their sweet time on a nearly 4-minute touchdown drive off the opening kickoff. Our hope? Senior wideout Jonathan Smith, who takes a short hitch 82 yards for the score on our first play from scrimmage. A couple minutes later, Tony Hollings finds his way to the end zone for a 14-7 lead, and we jump out big in the first half.

Halftime: Georgia Tech 27, Virginia 10

The second half shows why UVa is ranked in the top ten. We extend the lead to 30-10 early in the third, but can't score the rest of the way. Late third quarter, Matt Schaub hits Hagans for a 13-yard touchdown pass, and then pulls to within one score with 6:08 remaining. It's up to the Georgia Tech defense, with the Cavs in the red zone, fourth and ten with two minutes to play - and the Yellow Jacket defense comes through with a stop. We're able to run out the clock, and come away with a huge win in Charlottesville.

Looks like a great matchup on paper - our strengths against their strengths and vice versa.

Key Players:
<U>Georgia Tech</U>
HB T. Hollings (15 Rush TD)
WR J. Smith ( Reciving Yards)
K D. Jordan ( FG)

<U>West Virginia</U>
HB K. Harris (1476 Rush Yards)
HB Q. Wilson (15 Total TD)
OLB G. Wiley (94 Tackles)

Set up to be a good match, but it's really not. We give up a 77-yard touchdown run on the third play of the game, and that sets the tone. We just don't seem to play well in big games - this is our fifth loss, and all five of those losses have been our five regionally televised games.

Halftime: West Virginia 28, Georgia Tech 6

This was actually the breaking point. We were receiving the ball heading into the second half, and were driving to end the first - with a good chance of closing in, but with 0:02 left in the first half, West Virginia makes a behind-the-back interception in our end zone to kill a drive, and that seemed to completely kill our spirits. We trail 31-14 after three quarters, and pull to within 10 points three times in the fourth quarter, but can't make up enough ground. Bilbo is forced to throw far too often - we have luck driving on the ground, but behind by 2-3 scores late in the game, we have to throw.
