Anybody Else Ever Play Roguelike Games?

Moria, Angband, Zangband, etc?


Man I spent a whole summer playing Angband and listening to the radio. Probably the game I have spent the most time playing in my life.

Ahh...good old rogue-like games :) JAMoria for the mac was great, played the hell out of that one. Recently I've been playing ADOM a ton (Ancient Domains of Mystery). Great games :)

I had the old Amiga version of Moria. I never got very far, but it was usually a decent way to kill 15 minutes (before I'd inevitably be killed by a piece of mold).

Pulling an all-nighter didn't necessarily mean I was working on homework during my time playing Rogue and Hack in the mid-80's.

Hard to beleive I could get that much enjoyment watching a @-warrior and his little "d" moving through a vast ASCII maze.

I've tried ADOM, but haven't spent more than three hours with it. Maybe I will have to fire it up again next week when I am on vactaion.

i went through a phase of these just before i sold my last PC. good fun and not too taxing. i think ADOM was my favourite (i think i still have it on my work PC but never remember to fire it up).

Finally I got around to transfer all the collected reports from the queue to the public bug database. Almost 2000 entries had to processed - so I decided to do this automatically. This means that right now you will find a lot of duplicates and probably quite a bit of stuff that is not really a bug in the bug database.

The next step for me is to resume work on ADOM 1.2.0 and process the content of the bug database. This seems to be a more natural approach given the ~ 2000 reports ;-)

Sorry for taking so long but things get back on track. Some delay was induced by the new website created for a good friend - if you are interested in pen & paper RPGs and other stuff, visit the Fantasy En'Counter - it's a great shop with lots of neat stuff - although you will need to understand a little bit of German to use it.

ADOM is firmly entrenched as one of my top 3 favorite games of all time. My short attention span usually causes me to get bored with most games after ten hours, but I've been playing ADOM for about 6 years now, and can sometimes still play it for 20 hours in a week.

As far as the *band games go, I can't recommend Hengband (http://echizen.s5.xrea.com/heng/eng-hengband/) enoguh. It's a Japanese project, and manages to combine some of the best parts of other *band projects, as well as some of it's own innovations.

Pets and ability to ride some monsters.

Dynamic lighting.

Multiple windows which can be configured and assigned to display your character, map, monster memory, etc.

Programmable macros....probably on of it's best unique features, I've got almost all of the useful commands mapped out to ctrl, alt, or shift, used with the number pad, so I can reduce the carpal tunnel effect of most roguelikes.

I played a ton of angband, such a great game. I never did beat it and maybe once a year or so I pick it back up out of boredom and play the hell out of it.

I used to love playing Rogue on my TRS-80 ! that was my all time favorite game.. until I found Earl Weaver Baseball at least...

I've played Roguelike games since Rogue too Almighty, so we're both old. :) I've never beaten any of them, or come that close to it really, but I still find myself playing them more than any other game. Who thought a game with ASCII graphics for most of them could have that much appeal?

I think its the excitement of never knowing what you are going to find on a level of the various dungeons-a quest, a tough to kill monster(s), or that favorite message of mine, "You feel this is a special level" :)

Right now the main two I'm playing are Hengband and TOME (used to be Pernband Airhog), TOME mostly as I've finally developed a taste for the game after not getting into it that much when it was Pernband. My all time favorite class to play comes from Hengband though. The Magic-Eater. Lets you absorb the powers of the various rods, staffs and wands and use them as spells-you don't have to carry all those things around, and the more you find, the more times you get to use that power. Just a great idea for a character class.

I enjoy Zangband-tk. The windows graphics and interface are just better IMO. I can never remember all the commands, so it's nice to have things on pull-down menus. But nothing beats the old days of playing rogue in high school... :D

Back when I had my old computer Zangband-TK was my favorite game due to the really great graphics. The guy who created it stopped working on it I think, so it hasn't been updated in quite a while...I think.

Ironic that this gets posted, as I just started playing Zangband-TK a couple of weeks ago. I'm pretty much hoooked. Stupidest death yet: escaping from a horrid situation with 1 hp left and getting killed by a fruit bat.
