View Full Version : OT: Arby's Oven Mitt

I am normally ashamed to admit that I have fallen for one of Madison Avenue's tricky ad campaigns, but the latest commerical where the Oven Mitt is alerted to the fact that he doesn't have a nose, followed by another revelation where he learns he doesn't have any ears just cracks me up. I've found myself occassionally shouting to Nancy for no apparent reason, "AH! I don't have any ears!"
I am considering seeking the help of a professional. Can anybody else backing me up that this is actually funny and that I'm not losing my mind?

It's not exactly a side-splitter, but I've found the campaign fairly amusing.

I like the commercial a lot too. I love how he panics about it once he learns his horrible secret. Twice. Good stuff. Maybe the most enjoyable since that damn Pets.com sock puppet dog.

I'm more annoyed than amused. Maybe I'm just pissed at marketing in general after I didn't win a quacking AFLAC duck in a raffle held by our insurance agent at work.

You'd be hard pressed to find a commercial that made me laugh upon viewing it, but I will admit that I did chuckle a bit after seeing this commercial tonight.
Has anybody seen the "Green Light" commercial for Molson Canadian? It is the only commercial that has made me actually get out and buy the product. Great commercial.....

The Oven Mitt one was amusing...slightly...the first time. Now it's just gotten annoying...
Don't think if I've seen the Green Light commercial though.
They have Molson Canadian commercials in the States?

Actually, the only place I've seen it, was on CBS' coverage of the Molson Indy from Toronto. They played it every commercial break, and I loved it every time.

The first time that I saw it was okay. Now it's just getting on my nerves, it seems to be on every time I turn around.
My favorite one is a radio commercial, not sure of the beer it's for off the top of my head though. It's a guy proposing to his girlfriend by saying "I'm not getting any younger. I mean I can't attract the hot chicks anymore. I guess what I'm trying to say is if I'm going to be tied down to one person for the rest of my life, it might as well be you." the catch line is something about there being a time for the truth, or something like that.
No wonder you're at Betty Ford :)

If I have to see one more commercial for Fox's new shows The OC and Skin, I WILL commit murder.
Am I missing something, or does The OC appear to be 90210 for the new generation? Outsider guy tries to fit in with the pretty people in southern California. I guess they decided that dealing with another Shannon Doherty wasn't worth it, so they didn't even bother, they just went straight for a "bad boy" Brandon. At least that's how it looks to me.

I'm sorry, guys, but I think that the Arby's Oven Mitt is one of the most inane ad campaigns in a long time. It seems to signal the death knell of a restaurant when they take the focus off their food and go with dorky animated reps. My wife and I marvel that somewhere in a advertising meeting a person suddenly sat up and went: "I got it! We'll use an animated oven mitt!"
But then it works for some of you, so I guess I'll shut up. No offense intended, just my humble opinion...

As I mentioned in another thread, I find Hardee's "we admit we used to suck but now our hamburgers are better" approach to be one of the most puzzling marketing campaigns in a long time.
The newest commercial is the worst of the bunch I've seen. It's a testimonial from a guy who sells hamburger patties to the fast food industry about how he's always being asked to make the thinnest, cheapest patty he can, but that he got a call the other day from someone wanting a thick patty made out of Angus beef, and how surprised he was. And he says, "And here's the shocker, it was Hardee's on the line."
Now, that might say something good about their new hamburgers, but if someone who regularly does business with the fast food industry is shocked that, out of any fast food chain, it would be Hardee's wanting something other than the cheapest product available...doesn't that say more negative about them than the positive you might get out of it about their new burgers?
And like I said before - what about the rest of their food? Are they still getting the cheapest quality food they can otherwise, except for their new burgers?
I just don't get it. Not that I would eat there anyway, but that would make me want to run away from Hardee's if I was on the fence at all.

agreed. Not only does the campaign angle suck, but I find the over mitt incredibly obnoxious. I will now make a concerted effor to not eat at Arbys.

I like Hardee's for breakfast. Sausage and egg biscuits for 99 cents, baby!
Oh, for those out west....Carl's Jr?? Who's 'Carl'? What exactly is his 'Jr.'?

I won't. I slay myself all the time with my humo[u]r, so no worries for me.
And henceforth I'll just envision that hilarious animated oven mitt whenever you prattle on with such Subby-like gems as "I heart cock." Carry on, Leno.

Carl Karcher. He apparently opened his first hot dog stand in '40s (or something like that - they used to have pictures of it in all the restaurants), and grew the chain from there. I don't know that the "Jr." part has ever been explained. However, the chain in recent years has been running ad campaigns that make the sleaziest FOX reality shows seem tasteful in comparison.

My wife and I absolutely hate the Oven Mitt. He's just a Hamburger Helper glove knockoff. I'll still eat there before most fast food places though.
That Hardees commercial really confused me too. We were the last place you'd go for a burger? Way to pump up the quality of your food. Besides, why get a burger there when I can have a hot ham 'n cheese? ....drool....
One other related commercial note. Whenever I saw one of those commercials with the Pillsbury Doughboy where someone would press his belly and he'd giggle....I always wanted to just stab my finger right on through his back and then spin him on it.

I completely agree with the confusion over the new Hardee's campaign. It's like they stole a page from Coca-Cola's ad campaign when they ditched new Coke in favor of Classic Coke. Except that people actually like Coke.
Does Hardee's still serve chicken? During my struggling post-college single days, I discovered that if you went to Hardee's late at night they would sell you any left over chicken at half price, so I would go down there and buy a big-ass box of chicken that would last me a couple of days for like $5.
I admit that previous Oven Mitt comercials didn't do it for me. I read that Tom Arnold was the original voice of the Mitt, which is a turn off, but it doesn't sound like him on the most recent commercial.

Is it just me, or could a Starbucks/Kresty Kreme/JetBlue-type chain be a rousing success. It seems McDonald's food has gone down in qulaity and is greasier then heck, BK is not that good to me, and then you have your smaller, same-level chains. The only good burger joint in my mind is Wendy's

Arby's is by far the best Fast Food type restaurant, in my opinion..
Mmmmm, only thing is you've got to have coupons. Now I'm not a big "Couponer" but seriously if you don't use them at Arby's you really do pay about double what you would have. Those 5 Roast Beef Sandwiches for $5-whatever ones are marvelous.. :D

Thinking about Myles previous post and this, is it just me or is the "big three" lost it's quality of food, and even downsized the portions. Arby's and Chic-fil-la are my favorite two, but they don't focus ont he burger joints.

Mmm, Chick-Fil-A..
One thing I can guarantee you'll never see at a Mall is a Chick-Fil-A without a long line.
Some of you people seem to take things to seriously. Like not eating at a place because of a commercial they run. If you don't like the commercial don't watch it. Some people actually find it amusing though.

I'll boycott a company because of its ad campaign/marketing strategy.
One commercial (for Miller?) I don't care for very much is the one where a guy is with a bunch of buddies and says that he'd get in the boxing ring for a million dollars. Next they show him getting his head knocked off....how am I supposed to watch baseball with my 3 year old around if they're showing commercials of guys being decapitated?

As for Hardee's, I love the campaign and think it's brilliant.
Hardee's used to have a few good products, but their burgers were horsemeat. I wouldn't have eaten a Hardee's burger if you paid me. Their biscuits were the best, and their roast beef was good, but the burgers?? Give em to your dog.
Then, Carl's Jr. takes over, does the flame-broiled thing (way, way better than BK) and introduces the Angus burgers. Now, if I want a burger, I go to Hardee's. Their fries rival other fast food places, and the burgers are awesome. "The last place I would go is now the first." Hardee's is my new favorite fast food place. (Unless Culver's counts. Then it's second. But that's another story. Look out, rest of the U.S.! Wisconsin-based Culver's is on its way!)

None of them even come close to the Terry Tate commercial ad's, or the I Am ads that were airing in Canada for Molson's. Another series I really enjoyed was the old NFL commercials (John Randle chasing the chicken, I think it was Natrone running up the hill, then throwing himself down) they aired just before preseason.
The oven mitt was midly amusing the first time, but it's having the same problem as most 'okay' commercials do now, overaired, and quickly become annoying.

Though I love Culver's... frankly, I don't think their Butterburgers are that big of a deal. All it means is that they take the bun, butter it, and then toast/fry it to a golden brown crisp. It's a great touch, but the kind of thing little local cafes here in the Midwest have been doing for generations. Now, don't get me wrong, the burgers are good, the fries are good, but the REAL draw of Culver's is the frozen custard. Somebody said "ice cream". It's custard, man, custard. dOOOOd, get with the program. What I especially appreciate about Culver's is that they don't skimp on the toppings. (anybody see the movie "Tortilla Soup"?..."I love toppings. Can't get enough toppings. The more toppings the better, I say.") Their pecans, for example, aren't the chopped up, stale, and spongy things Dairy Queen uses, for example, but halved, crunchy, lightly salted pecans. Mmmmm. Their Turtle Concrete? Oh, heaven.
Now, we just need to get Chicagoland's Oberweiss to franchise throughout the U.S. Omigosh, teach the world what God designed ice cream to taste like. Haagen Daas ain't got nuttin on Oberweiss.

I'm down with the Chic-Fil-A. I wish we had one in Kansas City. There was one in the mall where I used to live and there was one in the commons at the University of Missouri, which meant I could use my student ID to charge food there. A good portion of my student loan payments goes to pay for chicken sandwiches and waffle fries.
Surprised no one has mentioned Steak-n-Shake, although I don't know how plentiful they are outside the Midwest. A little pricey, but great burgers and such. They also have the best chili-in-a-can I've ever had.

Here in California, In-N-Out Burger is easily the best fast food chain, IMO. However, it's still not anywhere as good as an independent burger place we have here in town, Redrum (formerly Murder) Burger.
