I will be using the 2003 Tiger Woods PGA Tour for the PC. I will explain the Career mode later, but wanted to get the word out as I am sure everyone has been waiting with baited breath for a golf dynasty.

More when my Fear of God vs. bot hattrick USA Cup game is done.

See you on the links...

In T.W. PGA tour 2003 Career Mode, you start out as a very lowly amateur player.
The first order of business is to get the look you want, which is, of course, irrelevant here. Suffice to say, I did this.
Now, there are 5 ratings areas in the game: power, accuracy, recovery, distance control and putting. You start your career with each set at 10.
You begin the game with $3,500 and a set of 12 clubs.
You begin with the following equipment as well:
Shaft Flex - regular
Club Type - perimeter weighted
Ball Type - 2-piece distance
There are other types to purchase, but they are way too expensive at this point.

You can go to the practice range and work on your game. While doing this, you will get offers for competitions where you have to put up your $$ against your opponent's $$. For example, you may be invited to a putting competition where you and one opponent each put up $200, with the winner taking home the whole $400, loser is out of luck.

Then you have a calendar with set dates to play in competition. You may have a 1v1 18 holes, or a chipping competition with more players than the practice range. You may have a tournament to play with, say, $25k in total prize money. The calendar starts at Jan. 1 and continues on with certain preset dates. You can be on the practice range for hours and you will still be at Jan. 1 to start the calendar. You can skip events you do not feel comfortable competing in.

Now, you win prize money, hopefully, in order to upgrade your skills and equipment. On amateur level, each skill point costs $100. You try to get all skills to 25. When you do, you play a real tournament that you must place within a certain ranking to advance to the next level. At that point, skill points are more, opponents are better, new courses open and you go with a new calendar to get to the next level.

Anything I forgot, I will explain as I go. Let's get going

Our favorite amateur golfer is the totally unknown T.E. Almighty, twin brother of the aptly named T.E. Almighty currently on the TCU football team on these sweet dynasty pages. I am not sure what the T.E. stands for, but rest assured I am searching the courthouse records as we speak (or write).

Clubs: we started out with 12 of the 14 allowed. For $150 each, we selected a sand wedge and a lob wedge to fill out our bag.

We have: driver, 3-wood, 5-wood, 3-9 irons, pw, sw, lw and putter to complete the 14 clubs allowed in a bag. We contemplated taking a 2-iron over the lob wedge, but hope the 5-wood will work as a replacement club.

Let me say to any golfers out there that I am NOT one. I have never had a lesson in my life, and have not played more than 2 times in any of the past dozen or so years. I once shot a 36 for nine holes at a place called Runaway Bay, west of Ft. Worth, Tx., but that was a pretty easy course and a lot of luck. Since then, I have never broken 80, and play mostly on athletic ability, not golf acumen, when I do play my once a year round.

The first order of business is to use some of my bankroll to increase my ratings, so I did.

<pre>
Stat Start Now
Power 10 15
Accuracy 10 16
Recovery 10 10
Dist. Cont. 10 15
Putting 10 16

I need to try to stay out of the rough with that recovery skill. :)

Bankroll: $1000

Another thing you get to do is increase the number of 'shots in the bag.' By this I mean you start off not really understanding the game, so you can get lessons in how to make specific shots you will need in the course of a round.

With that in mind, we go to the local club pro and take some lessons.

We learn the basics for free: driving, chipping and putting. Driving and chipping we get on our first try. Putting takes 3.

Others are more costly. We learn: bump and run shot- first try the punch shot- takes 8 times to get it playing from the sand- 'blast' for short around the green shots, and 'pick' for fairway traps- each is done in 1 try
Each lesson costs us $50.

Career Earnings: $0
Bankroll: $850

So it's off to the practice range we go, and we take out the driver, loosen up a bit, then let it rip.

Did I mentio my power rating was a 15? I managed to wallop that puppy a cool...244 yards. Par 5s may be interesting.

While I am whacking away, I get offered a chipping contest with a buy-in (if you will) of $144, meaning the winner will pocket the $288 and the loser will be walking home.

Site: Sahalee Country Club
Opponent: Tyler Forner. Tyler plays an average round in 86 strokes.

This will be a rather long one, a 25 yard chip. Unfortunately, the computer player never goes first and there is never any reversing of order. I go first in all 3 rounds.

Round 1
Almighty: first effort sucks.
Distance to Pin:19 feet

Forner: better than me.
Distance to Pin: 10 feet

Round 2
Almighty: that's more like it. Now, will it hold up?
Distance to Pin:6 feet

Forner: same stroke
Distance to Pin: 11 feet

Round 3
Almighty: way too hard
Distance to Pin:13 feet

Forner: he is consistant...and a LOSER
Distance to Pin: 10 feet

With a distance from the pin of 6 feet, I win my first competition. :D

Career Earnings: $288
Bankroll: $994

Godzilla Blitz, I actually didn't even look in the general game options. It's just that it gets harder in career mode as you move up in levels. If I think about it, I will look.

Thanks for watching, and fill in your divot.

Back we go to the practice range. We work on putting, trying to get a feel for the way the ball rolls and how hard ya gotta smack it to go certain distances.

As we putt, we get a call to participate in a driving competition. We agree to put in $149, making the pot worth a cool $298.

Off we go...

thealmighty
07-23-2003, 11:10 PM
Site: TPC Sawgrass
Opponent: David Bentley. David averages 234 yards per drive, 2.20 putts per hole and scores 86, on average. With the 234 average drive, we are feeling good.

We feel lucky until we see the hole chosen. With power at 15, we know we're in trouble. Unfortunately, the hole is up hill and there is rough forever before you reach the fairway. A drive in the rough is no shot. I go first in all 3 rounds, as always.

Round 1
Almighty: oh so close
Distance: no shot

Bentley: not even close
Distance: no shot

Round 2
Almighty: hooked it short
Distance: no shot

Bentley: oh my, within a yard of the fairway, but short
Distance: no shot

Round 3
Almighty: no good. Now I sweat his final attempt.
Distance: no shot

Bentley: not gonna make it.
Distance: no shot

Amazingly, not 1 of our 6 shots lands in the fairway. It is a 'you both suck' draw. In a quirk of the game, my getting my money back counts as career earnings for me. WooHoo.

Career Earnings: $437
Bankroll: $994

Back to the range until we get offered a chance to 'putt for dough' in a putting competition.

The stakes this time are a measly $139, but we need the experience and the practice.

Site: Torrey Pines South Course
Opponent: Doug Leslie. Doug averages 2.16 putts per hole, so it could be tough as a first effort.

It is a very long putt, too. A 22 yard putt is not my idea of fun. I have not exactly been practising my 22 yard putts on the range, but we will give it a go.

Round 1
Almighty: first putt sucks big time.
Distance to Pin: 10 feet

Leslie: pretty good lag.
Distance to Pin: 7 feet

Round 2
Almighty: Shit, that was just plain ugly.
Distance to Pin: 12 feet

Leslie: uh, oh. :(
Distance to Pin: 5 feet

Round 3
Almighty: boo yah. Now that's what I'M talkin' about
Distance to Pin: 17 inches

Leslie: better every shot, but not good enough.
Distance to Pin: 4 feet

With a distance from the cup of 17 inches, I win the $278 pot.

Posting the holes like this is VERY labor intensive with all the color coding. It is hard to see between the code if I have made a mistake, so if you see something that is screwy or out of place, let me know and I will check/fix it.

heheh I thought about doing this with my career, too. i just qualified for Champion's level with a win at Bay Hill. This game rules. Interestingly, I think I went to the driving range a total of one time. I just started out right away in the Career Calendar. When you get your power ratings up there, the game is crazy. Its like you're superman out there. The distance rating for my 3 wood is over 300 yards now.

Ill be watching this thread :)

Cool thread TE. I'm still hoping to start a TW dynasty myself, but it would be one where people sign up and I just play/sim a tour and see how everyone does. I haven't loaded up the game much since I bought it, and I didn't see an easy way to make a tour of only fake players, but I *think* I may be able to edit some things to get what I'm looking for. I'll be following your career. Good luck!

This is good, unbelievability good. Thanks for taking the time to do it. I had been playing JN golf games for over 12 years but had stopped playing last year. But doing something like this could definitely get back into PC golf.

Some questions.

Is this the only PC golf game with a Career Mode?

Do you have the various options for hitting? Mainly, is there still a 3-click option for old PC duffers like me?

How do you get your card or do you just sign up for a PGA tournament as you see fit?

This is the BIG question. When you play the various tournaments throughout the year, are all of the courses there?

That last question is what would get me back because as much as I love JN6/GBC and the custom courses, I got burned out from the wonderful Augusta National and Pebble Beach courses over and over. I know I could download other courses but I had always dreamed about playing out a season on every course.

MJ4H
07-24-2003, 09:14 PM
1. i dont know of another game with career mode, but im sure this is the best career mode by far even if there is.

2. yes there are several styles of hitting available, including 3 click

3. you start out as an amateur and can enter events as you see fit. to move up to the next level, professional, you have to get all your attributes to a certain level, then finish in, like, the top 35 of a qualifying tournament. similar for next levels, tour, champion, master levels.

4. the game ships with 15 courses, an excellent variety. when you play in career mode, only a few are rotated on amateur level, but when you move up, more courses are played on for the events (as well as different game types, like scramble and stableford). however, if you play in season mode or just regular mode you can play on all the courses, etc. the best part is the course architect allows you to make your own courses (but is difficult) and many very talented designers have made some excellent courses already (bookmark Notapro's TW site immediately on game acquisition). i have over 40 courses in my collection and love EVERY ONE. if i dont like a course, i delete it. i keep only the best. if anyone is interested, ill post a list of the courses i have. if you havent ever downloaded a custom course, basically anything by Dammpa & Damma you cant go wrong with. Coyote Bluff is freakin cool (except for that 15th freakin hole - very difficult tee shot from back tees).

Thanks MJ4H. I have the game now. I have been downloading GBC courses for years and it was somewhat of a shock to see how relatively few are available for PGA, even checking Notapro and CC. Here's a final question for now. As more courses open up as you advance, is there the possibility of adding new courses to the rotation, beyond the default 15 (like Augusta)?

FYI, back in the day, I was the second person to make a website offering JNSE courses for download (I *think* Terry Clark was first), and I even had a couple of "online" tours going for a while. I also remember dealing with great guys like Steve Opfer, Scott Chesney, Brian Silvernail, Brent Blackburn, etc. I miss those days. :(

So far, no. But Im only on Championship level (master level still to come). But this is only in career mode. In season mode and regular play you can play on whatever courses you want, remember.

It seems it would make sense to take it one step further and put the season mode into the career mode. But knowing that Career Mode is a revolutionary concept (which sold me despite having Woods face all over the product), we should expect to see more in each year's versions.

crappy, I didn't know that. We may have even crossed paths way back. What got me into all of this was JN's Greatest 18 Holes of Golf on the Mac, which was the second game I had ever bought. I also played PGA Tour for a little while, until the bad PGA Tour 96 release.

Well, I haven't tried it yet, but it seems like the player files are all the same type, whether they are user-created or not. They just put certain players in the appropriate directory on the computer. So, there are ones like Champ, Tour, PGA Tour, PGA Tour - Full, etc. Thus, I would think that if you just made a bunch of fictional players, then stuck them all in the same tour directory, it might work. I'll try it soon ... I just haven't even loaded up the game in a month or so.

With a bankroll in excess of $7k, it is time to raise our attributes so we do not look inept when we putt and chip.

<pre>
Stat Was Now
Power 15 25
Accuracy 16 25

We do, in fact, have the funds available to max out our skills as an amateur (25s across the board), but we think we need more work/practice before trying to move up in level. Therefore, we will be working at this level a bit longer.

Round 1

Calendar skins game, January 14th.

Site: TPC of Scottsdale, holes 13-15. Greens normal, rough average, winds are breezy.
Opponent: 3 opponents.
Setup: We play in a foursome. Each hole is worth $1000. Low score for each hole wins the bank for that hole. If there is a tie between any number of players on a hole, the $1000 for that hole will carry over to the next hole, and so on, until all monies have been won.

We pay a $50 entry fee to play.

I would love to detail how the game went, but all 4 golfers were on screen and the other 3 players shots went by so fast, I couldn't keep up.
I ended up losing on the first 2 holes, but came back to win the final hole and pocket $1000, as there were no carry-overs.

I love the variety, that seems to keep it going. I'll be loading this up tonight (got it for $19.99 at Best Buy).

Question. What kind of tournament was it you entered on Jan 6 and how were you qualified for that one?

Anrhy, Jan 6 was a stroke play tournament. It is like the tourneys you would see the pros play on tv, except only 9 holes.

You are entered by having the entry fee because everything on your calendar is an automatic qualify, as long as you are not broke and cannot pay the fee.

Have fun with it. :)

Sorry to interrupt to ask stupid questions. I have been on the Practice range for a while getting a feel for the differences. I use 3-clicks and it took me a while to understand the "E" button since the game does not give you a flight arrow. I figured out, on chips, to adjust the landing spot but even hitting it perfectly, it's not where I chose the landing spot to be. When you pull back or forward, where is the landing spot in the view?

Also, I cannot figure out how to putt. I see no indication whatsoever as to the "landing" spot of a putt. How do you tell? I mean, if the hole is 43 feet away, how can I tell how hard to it? In others games, full strength would always mean the distance to the hole after you adjust the length arrow. In the practice green, I hit it normally and it goes by the hole 30 feet.

Anrhy, there are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

I don't use the 3-click, so I don't know about that. However, in the 'true swing' any shot close to the green is like a real life shot, where there is no line to look at or a meter to measure off of. It is a feel thing that you must practice for break and distance or how far back you pull the club and how fast you follow through.

I don't know what skill level you have, but at low skill levels, chipping and putting are a bitch, but get much easier as the skill # rises.

I'm getting the hang of judging distance by practicing with TrueSwing to get a feel for hit pct.

By the way, I never really noticed it before but in this game (and in JN6 which I just checked), there is no graphics for roughs. I pulled up St Andrews just for the heck of it and it was horrible looking (like a patchwork of brown astroturf). Kind of takes all of the fun of playing that course. Courses like Augusta, on the other hand, looks great since it is nothing but trees, grass and flowers.

DAMN! DAMN! DAMN YOU ALMIGHTY!!! I wanted to buy this game only when it would drop to bargain bin price, now I HAVE TO GET IT!!! This career thing sounded cool when I first read about it, now it's something I have to try out!

I already have TW2002, it was just a matter of time until I'd get TW2003, well seems like the time is now...

thealmighty, very good writeup, very entertaining. My favorite funniest/most real moment so far:

Anrhy, that is, unfortunately, very true. If you look closely, you can see a slight difference in color between the fairway and the 2 cuts of rough (usually).

FrogMan, thanks for reading and the comments. sabotai got the game for only $7, used, at EB, though I don't know the deal in Canada, obviously.

BTW, TW2004 is set to come out in October.

A patchwork of brown is what a real Scottish links course is supposed to look like. If St. Andrews was green and lush the Scots would refuse to play it because it looks like a sopping wet Yank target course.

I saw that there's an EB in Quebec City, never knew there was one until last week. They had it at two different price, 34.50$cdn and 28.75 $cdn. Looked like the same game but the 28.75$ one wasn't wrapped the same way. Maybe that was a used one. 25 vs 30 for a used one isn't a very good deal, imo... FYI, 34.50$cdn = 24.91$us, and 25$cdn = 20.76$us, not that big a deal, but not planned in our budget right now, especially since I got TW2002 about three months ago in a bargain bundle :( We do run a very tight ship. I'll see if I don't have a few rolls of quarters I could exchange for that game :)

Anrhy, read below for the answer...

thealmighty
07-29-2003, 04:36 PM
We decided to max out our attributes in order to move on. There was not any competition in the 9-hole tournaments. It is not necessary to show improvement when you can win everything and barely break par.

<pre>
Stat Was Now
Power 25 25
Accuracy 25 25
Recovery 20 25
Dist. Cont. 25 25
Putting 25 25
</pre>

Money Spent: $500

Now we are eligible to go to Q- School. We have one more stroke tournament we have played that needs reporting, then it will be time to attempt to qualify for the next level and see where we REALLY stand in terms of skill level.

It appears you could have done this earlier, was there a game function that prevented you from doing so? I obviously haven't got that far yet in my career (still on Jan 1) but I wondering the pace of this career, whether it will give me the satisfaction of earning and learning my way up instead of power leveling.

thealmighty
07-29-2003, 05:21 PM
As soon as you get enough money to buy your way up to max on all attributes, you can go to the qualify tourney. Therefore, at amateur level, it can be done VERY fast as you only need to make $7500 to have the $$ to max out (and competition obviosly sucks big time.)

I chose to take my time rather than just 'breeze' on through as I, of course, could have. I am in no hurry to beat 'the snot' out of Tiger. His time will come :) .

p.s.- q-school should be easy, too, I think. I am hoping the next level is tougher. Plus, I believe an attribute point costs $1k, so to max out you will need to earn at least $125k (5x25) which, I am guessing, is not so easy. We will see very soon.

I haven't gotten past Tour level yet, so I don't know.

Pro, Championship, Master

I just qualified for Master myself. Attributes cost $500,000 a piece :)

For comparison, the tournament to qualify for master level, which I won, netted me about $6.5 mill (it was four rounds on the numbingly boring Torrey Pines Course).

I remember attributes cost $50,000 on Championship level. Don't remember before that.

Anybody in the thread played both TW2003 and PGA Champ 2000? I've found that I just can't do TruSwing in PGA - the motion just doesn't seem 'right' to me.

Is Tiger more affable to different swing types? More forgiving?

Thanks!

amateur level- attribute $100
professional- attribute $1000
champ- attribute $50,000
master- attribute $500,000

Wow, that is quite a jump in cost.

MJ4H, are the players comensurately skilled the higher you go, i.e., is the Pro level not too tough but after that you BETTER be pretty fucking good?

RPI-Fan, I have not played PGA Champ 2000. Only other golf game I ever played was Links, and I do not like 3-click, so I never use it.

As for swing types, TruSwing in TW is the best I have used. I hate the 3-click because it always seemed to involve too much luck (in a way). True Swing is more forgiving, until you start to get higher level and do fades and stuff in your shotmaking. Then you need more skill.

The players do get better (the scores get lower) but I found just improving my attributes kept me on pace with them. I suppose my improvement in the game may have contributed, too, but its difficult to tell how much. I honestly only lost a few career events Ive entered throughout. Havent tried a master event. Playing on master difficulty in non-career mode is freaking TOUGH though.

Played for 2 hours last night and had a blast officially starting my career. However, I am going to have to start it over. The first challenge was a long match play at St. Andrews. I ended up winning 6 and 5 but should have won earlier. It was not about half way though the match that it finally dawned on me why my putts were stopping way short. I neglected to consider Very Wet greens so when looked at my on-going log of chips and putts, those original numbers reflected Normal greens. The first mistake I made was when it told me that I won 6 and 5, I ended the game. Apparently it wanted me to finish all 18 holes regardless, so I lost the $200 I put in when I should have won an extra $200. Also, the next challenge which I just quickly did, I forgot to type in the ante. It was a waste to play for $18. So last night was great practice, I learned a lot, esp. paying attention to money when a few hundred dollars can mean a lot.

I did play around with TrueSwing and found it to be much more forgiving. However, I will still play with 3-click since it is a more systematic and familiar approach.

BTW, there are 2 ways to use TruSwing, if anyone was not aware.

There is TrueSwingH, where you swing the mouse back-forth to hit, and TrueSwingV, where you move the mouse up/down to hit.

Ft. Worth, Texas:April 28

The Qualification Tournament for the Professional Golf Association is scheduled today at Colonial Country Club here in Ft. Worth. As luck would have it, the favorite to win the Q-School event is a local man, T.E. Almighty.

" I remember coming to the Colonial Invitation Tournament several times as a kid, watching the golfers, like Lee Trevino. Mostly, my friends and I would hang out and look at all the incredible women. There was so much silicone and so many short skirts, I am amazed my dick didn't fall off for hurting so bad. Good times...good times," T.E. stated.

Hole No. 3 is rated the toughest third hole in America by the PGA of America. The course is relatively short, for a PGA tour course, but was rated in the top 100 courses in the world in most circles. The course features mostly bent- dogleg- holes, trees that obstruct your aim, and big-breaking greens.

T.E. said "You have to select the proper club off the tee to skirt all the trees. Sometimes you want to just whack the shit out of the driver, and that is often when you get in trouble. Keep under control, and you can shoot well."

The Q-School tourney gets under way today. Come watch local boy T.E. Almighty as he tries to qualify for the PGA tour... and see lots of huge boobs and skirts with little tufts of hair peeking out the bottom.

FWIW, I play with the vertical TrueSwing with TW2002 and find it more intuitive and more like a natural flow of the club. I mean, as I move my mouse back, I see the player doing his backswing and then when I go forward, I see him doing his full swing. I really feel that vertical TrueSwing is the closest to being on the course myself...

Thanks FrogMan (though I doubt I will need much luck against this group of losers :) ).

I also use the vertical.

I ran into the EASports Fatality last night. With $1000, I entered into a $500 Match Play challenge but ran out of time. With no saving in the middle of matches, I lost my $500. :(

If you just exit to main menu it saves the games automatically. At least it asks if you want to return later to finish the round. If you say yes, it saves it, if you say no, you withdraw from the event.

I didn't see that. Maybe because it was a match play challenge in career mode? All it asked me was if I want to end the match or not before it went to the main menu. A check of My Player showed me at $500.

Was the challenge from the calendar or off the practice range? I have saved like MJ4H mentioned on a calendar event, but not on a challenge registered when I was from the practice range.

Oh it may be something to do with it not being a calendar event.
