After 3 years, DSL is finally here in Troy, Missouri. I'll find out Tuesday if it's available in my neighborhood (fingers crossed).
If it is, I'll get a package from UPS on Friday, containing a modem and setup instructions. You don't know how excited I am!!
I've been on dialup at home since my first C64 and a 300 baud modem.
The first 3 months are $29.99, then $49.99 thereafter. The modem is half price at $60 and they waive the installation fee ($35). Although not the best deal, it's at least something.
Best of all, NO MORE DIAL-UP! :)

What about Cable modem (if DSL doesn't work out)? And failing that, Satellite connection?
But good luck, I could never go back to Dial ups again.....except on the road.

Welcome to the 21st Century Mizzou. Good to see Middle America is finally getting with the program. :)

In defense of mid America, Todd does live in the middle of freakin' nowhere. :)
Are you on GTE or Southwestern Bell out there? I'm assuming GTE. I don't know much about their DSL service. If you know where the closes central office is (probably the closest phone company building to your house), you should be able to guess whether or not your neighborhood will get it. It used to be within a mile and a half, but I think they have expaned that radius in the last few years.

I live in Lawrence, KS and get cable for $30 a month (not part of a package or anything- that's the flat rate). Not only that, but I can get download speeds of up to 300Kbs at night. Middle America, my arse.
How many of you can get cable modem for that cheap (it would be cheaper but our apartment complex pays for cable so I can't get packages)? Plus, I doubt very few people this side of a T1 get those kind of download speeds :D

Well I suppose there had to be some kind of a positive in the trade-off for someone having to live in that area of the country.. ;) (JK Icey)

I think of it as reparitions for having to live in a college town of bad drivers and drunkards.

FWIW< here in central Illinois, we've had cable access for the last 3-4 years... I have gotten download speed upward of 3 megabits.

here, in Pintendre :) (it's nearby Quebec City, but a very small town, about 5000 people) we have had high speed cable access for 3 years. I was on cable until last December when the cable company got on my nerves so bad with their freaking strike and employees cutting wires and all that crap, I had, absolutely had to find a replacement to high speed cable internet. No DSL in the area, that's when a company offering some sort of digital TV, but by satellite (we have an antenna on the roof, but it doesn't get its feed from a satellite, rather from another antenna somewhere in Quebec City), came in the area an offered us a combo TV/internet. This is what we have now.
Just to say, not everyone in North America has access to DSL... ;)

More specifically, that's the tradeoff for living on the ugly side of the Missouri/Kansas Border. :)

I live in Troy, Missouri... a small town NW of St. Louis. We have a Walmart for peats sake! :)
Our phone company is Century Tel, the regular price is a tad high, but I'm just happy it might be available.
Cable's not available here and Satellite and partial T1 lines are too expensive for me (something like $99 and $129/mo).
Sad thing is, I've wanted DSL mainly for file sharing, doesn't look like you can do that anymore.. or is it just a no-no for music related files?
