Somebody just hacked into my brother's paypal account and emptied his bank account, which had $1700+ dollars in it. These hackers probably have access to a lot of bank accounts and credit cards, so i'd reccomend removing your credit card and bank account for the time being.

Anybody with a paypal account, please post your credit card info in this thread and I will check to see if it has been stolen. If not, I will try my best to protect the info for you so you can continue to charge things online.

I am just trying to provide a service for FOFC members, why would you try to ruin that The Afoci. You are just mean. I could even see you taking advantage of those PMs. :(

I would never go that The Afoci.
In fact, as a show of good faith, why don't you post your CC info here and I will protect your account, free of charge, just so others can see what a wonderful service I provide.

It's interesting, I just went on PayPal to check out a couple of things (like my account activity) and they gave a message to "check back in one hour" as they couldn't do it at this time. I wonder if a lot of people are on their site at the moment...

did your brother get a message about a transfer or did he have a paypal balance? Just curious how he directed it back to someone hacking paypal...

I have a paypal account and I am not the least bit worried. I would have to actually have money or at least available credit for someone to steal from me.

You think it was hacked? Did you ask your brother if he fell for one of those phisher scam emails? There have been a lot of them directed towards eBay users these days, phishing for their Paypal information.
Ask him if he got any email about eBay or Paypal asking for him to re-enter information, and then ask him if he actually did it.

I'm not sure, but what I think happened was that somebody got into his PayPal account & withdrew a bunch of money from his bank account. I have no idea how they would get my brother's password, so I assume they hacked in and got it. Good chance it could be something else though.

There's no way my brother would fall for one of those emails. Far too computer-savvy for it.

UPDATE:
What happened was that somebody from the Ukraine bought $1700 laptop from some guy on eBay and used my brother's account to pay for it. My brother has filed an unauthorized use claim with PayPal and will be getting his money back. The guy who sold the laptop is shit out of luck however. Never trust the Ukrainians.

the Ukraine is actually the source of some very large and elaborate financial scams - credit cards, ebay...they do it all, and do it pretty well.

When my bankcard information was stolen last year it was by someone in the ukraine. They didn't do such a good job at covering anything up though, I had no trouble getting my money back, cancelling subscriptions and getting names and addresses of everyone involved. Of course, I don't know if the bank ever bothered to attempt to prosecute, Icaught it after they had taken only about $300.

Someone alerted me recently to an awesome deal on laptops circulating from the Ukraine. They had a website with a link to a CNN article talking about the company and how they could afford to sell these laptops for bargain prices - $500 for a quality brand name laptop.
I was briefly excited because the CNN article made it seem legit. However, the further along I read in the article, the more things seem out of line. There were several points of bad grammar, misspellings, etc that would not have been published at CNN. By the end, I thought I had just read a commercial for the company, and realized it was obviously fake. I went to the CNN website and searched the archives on the date that the article reported to have been published and found no such article.
After closer examination, I realized that the fake CNN article had an address similar, but not identical, to the real CNN transcript website. I then searched the web for information about the company, but could not find any at all. It was one of those trendy computer company names, and I could find several similar companies (legit computer wholesalers) with similar names, but could not find an exact match.
It was obviously a forgery, but I wonder how many people fell for it when seeing an endorsement from CNN.

How did a thread about internet theft turn into a discussion about Marmel, Tucker's, and Afoci's sex life? Only at FOFC I suppose.

bigdawg's brother is probably one of those goombas who replied to those fake PayPal e-mails. There also are fake Earthlink and AOL e-mails floating. Also fake eBay e-mails.
Never reply to these. If you think you may need to update your data, go to the real Web site and do the deed.
These fake e-mailers are draining the accounts.

As I said earlier in the thread, there's no way he replied to one of those bogus emails. He's been aware of those bogus emails for some time, and has received them in the past, as have I.

bigdawg ...
Just curious, but you'd imagine if they drained it they had to know how much he had in there. If they requested too much and overdrew the account, the bank would have rejected it.
Also, I believe you can set withdraw limits in your PayPal account. There is a way to do this and highly suggested.
I've had few problems with PayPal.
One thing to ... did your brother ever have one of those e-mail based eBay IDs?
I just found $1700 in my bank account:)
