Q: It's that time of year again. "Madden '04" is going to arrive very shortly. Being the fabulous Sports Gal that I am to my boyfriend, he gets it as a birthday gift. What can we expect from "Madden '04" that will give me more "Sarah Time" then I'll know what to do with? -- Sarah W., Tewksbury, Mass.
SG: Two words: Owner mode. Maybe the greatest football game invention since that glorious year in "Madden" when you could break people's legs after the whistle, and it made that sick crunching sound. I'm not even ready to start talking about "Owner Mode" yet. Might warrant its own column.
Someone Introduce this guy to FOF so he can start posting here. If owner mode can warrant a column, surely FOF can warrant 5.

To be honest with you, alot of people just don't know that they are out there. I found out what FOF was through the EA site long ago. If it wasn't for that, I would have never even known about it. Same goes with OOTP, just something I stumbled across one day.

I'd like to understand why Sports Guy always mentions Video Bo as the greatest video athlete of all time, and yet never even mentions NHL '92 Petr Klima on Sega Genesis as a strong contender. I think anyone who played that game could back me up, this guy was a powerhouse!
I think I'm gonna e-mail him and clue him in...

I could be wrong, but he strikes me as more of an arcade guy than anything. I think he sees owner mode as a great addition to the arcade game, but would be bored by a game that is strictly owner mode with no eye candy or joystick capabilities.
I should also mention that I wrote him about FOF and TCY a long time ago, and never got a response. It might have been in response to a similar discussion in one of his columns.

I think I'd agree with that one.

How could you forget "Babe" on Baseball Stars?

I sent this to Sports Guy, I'll let you know if he replies personally or if by some stroke of luck it winds up in a mailbag.
--------
Everyone always mentions Video Bo as the Video Sports Athlete of All-time. I'd just like to make a plea for Petr Klima in the original NHL Hockey for the Sega Genesis ('92).
That guy was simply amazing.
Real-life Petr Klima may have been a soft, one-dimensional European floater with a bad haircut, but somehow that translated into instant superstar when run through EA's early ratings system. I can remember winning Stanley Cup after Stanley Cup with my Video Oilers while my brother watched helplessly as Video Klima established new standards for goal scoring. What's more, unlike Bo, he doesn't even really deserve it! I mean, it's not like we're talking about Video Gretzky or Video Lemiuex, or heck, even Video
Hawerchuk or something. We're talking about Video-freakin'-Petr Klima for crying out loud!
Where's the love?

There was a Sega Genesis game called Caesar's Palace. This is my all-time favorite gambling game because it had horse racing. Anyway, there was a horse called Monotreme Dream who seemed to win every race and win my brother and I tons of cash. Since neither of us could pronounce monotreme, we just called him Marmalade Dream. What a great horse.

Me too - I think I've even said that a couple of times here. I can only imagine how he'd trash a sim game.

I totally agree... #85 Petr Klima was a dominant force for a number of years in the NHL series, Robert Kron was another great one. That's funny that someone else besides my brother and I recognized the greatness that was Klima.

I'm convinced that Madden has destroyed several entire generations of men as far as women are concerned.
Chicks must hate EA.

Could also be because he's not a hockey fan. He probably has no idea about it...
Anyway, my favorite line:
"4. Band plays "I Will Survive" (+/- 8:45pm): I hate this song. There's always that one girl on the dance floor who just broke up with someone and gets a little too into the lyrics. Calm down, honey. "
This guy needs to write his own book about casual observations in the sports world...

True. I found out about Text Sims and FOF through Madden 2002 and MaddenMania.
