Well, this is a real blow to the Jaguars, but we still have Stokes, Hayes, and some others that can make up for this HUGE loss. Ah well, this season was and still is the "beginning of a new era" as stated by the owner Wayne Weaver.

I can never understand why athletes who are drug tested continue to use drugs. Why snort coke if you know you will be tested at some point during the next few months? Its not like this was his first warning, the drunk driving situation was.
Maybe the Jags continue the rebuilding in earnest now and let Leftwich play some. Or the backup QB who is a 2nd year player.

quitting drugs is not exactly the easiest thing in the world to do

I agree that quitting drugs has to be very difficult for drug addicts. But is it that difficult for casual users? I stopped smoking pot(daily habit) and using nitrus(occasionally) without an issue?
If Jimmy Smith was an addict wouldnt more tests have come back positive during his 11 years? Maybe im off base but to me this seems to be a guy who just makes stupid decisons repeatedly.

Certainly not easy, but if you have money you have resources available to you. If these snow-blowers had any sense, they would check themselves into a clinic for the entire off-season and get off the stuff. If that doesn't work, heck, you could hire private security to follow you around to keep you out of trouble.
I have no sympathy for drug users. You can't get addicted if you don't try the crap in the first place. I have even less sympathy for someone who has millions of reasons to stay clean and the resources to do so but instead chooses to piss their life away.

Once you're a veteran, I belive the drug tests are scheduled ahead of time. That means you have loads of time to get clean.
That being said, what an idiot. I love it when people get handed the proverbial world on a silver platter, and they jump into a dumpster looking for a dead rat to eat.

I think for people who are already first time offenders(Jimmy Smith), they are subject to random drug tests. Not positive but that is sticking in my head for some reason.....

You know I gotta give the NFL credit. At least their drug policy has caught some people and has some teeth. Even a star reciever is out 4 weeks now.
Too bad the players union would never let this happen in baseball.

The local paper here states that he has a problem that he was trying to overcome, but either missed or skipped a scheduled drug test. So it wasn't like he was caught redhanded. He even admitted to the problem, and voluntary checked himself in to an undisclosed rehab center. So I'm glad he has done this, and recognizing his problem.

Very stupid. He was one of the best receivers, even though lately he hasn't been getting his name out there as much since he plays for the Jags. But not only did he hurt himself, but his team and others around him. Dumb move.

Rumor now is that Smith is not the only big name who's tested positive and will ne suspended. Apparently there are others that are finishing up the appeal process and will be announced shortly.
(Cough, David Boston, cough.)

I'm sorta confused as to why this was such a shock to anyone. Smith has had a known habit in the past, as well as problems with alcohol. This suspension should have been expected by now.
