Hasn't made a good movie since American Beauty. What's the deal?

I liked David Gale, but I agree - he's made some poor movie choices.

I also think I'd much rather watch Kevin Spacey in a bad movie than a heck of a lot of other actors in good ones.

I like Kevin Spacey. He is a quality actor. I mean, look how well he pretends he likes women in every movie.

Watched David Gayle a couple of nights ago. Pretty good flick. Especially that Berlin chick. She was hot...

Haven't seen David Gale yet, but here are his post-Beauty flicks... major ones, anyway.

-Life of David Gale, The (2003) .... David Gale
-Shipping News, The (2001) .... R.G. Quoyle
-K-PAX (2001) .... Prot
-Pay It Forward (2000) .... Eugene Simonet
-Ordinary Decent Criminal (2000) .... Michael Lynch
-Big Kahuna, The (1999) .... Larry Mann

Shipping News sucked.
K-Pax was mediocre at best, mostly sucked.
Pay It Forward is possibly the worst movie of this century so far. Yes, including Jackass.
Ordinary Decent what?
Big Kahuna was painful.

Next film it shows him in has him playing Bobby Darin.

WTF?

I actually liked The Shipping News. Strange movie, though.

Kevin Spacey sucks. As did all the above movies. As did American Beauty, for that matter. Absolute garbage. Just my opinion.

Kevin Spacey is a great actor but he does need to get working on a good movie. I have American Beauty and that was the last Spacey film I liked (didn't enjoy KPAX).

I enjoyed K-Pax, and I think Spacey is a very good actor.

I hated American Beauty, but that was mostly because of philosophical differences, not because it wasn't a well-made movie.

I was about to say that the list omitted Deterrence ... and then I realized that was Kevin Pollak not Kevin Spacey.

So ... nevermind.

I liked the Shipping News as well. K-Pax sucked. I enjoyed Pay it Forward too.

To each their own. :)

Oh. Right. It's not O.K. to speak unkindly of a movie about drug use, violence, homosexuality, adultery, and pedophilia.

I don't think QS or anyone said it WASN'T ok to despise any movie you wanted to.

I just think it should have been called White Middle Class American Beauty.

Debateable. But I'm not going to argue the point.

The Usual Suspects is a great movie that he didn't "suck" in

Yes, it is. Just got that one on DVD for my birthday.

And Kevin Pollack is in it as well!

I thought American Beauty was OK. The only thing that turned me off a bit was the "I hate gays so of course I'm a closet homosexual" story line, which was so obvious that it was painful to watch the ending.

I think you missed the point of the movie entirely. Did you see the ending? Oh well, there are some people who still think "The Wall" is pro-nazi and anti-education which couldn't be furthur from the truth.

That is assuming you think American Beauty was a good movie (my wife didn't like it and I hated it). I thought K-Pax was pretty good, though.

LA Confidential was good, but combine that with American Beauty are the good movies he made ones in which he ends up getting killed?

Only an idiot would say Spacey is not a very talented actor, so I'm happy that nobody has actually disputed that fact yet:). About his more recent movies I didn't care for American Beauty. Although I recognize it is great film, it just depressed the hell out of me. I enjoyed The Big Kahuna and K-Pax, though the later was a difficult watch. I can see why Spacey did K-Pax - a far deeper story than the trailers present.

No love for "The Negotiator"? And I really liked him in the first movie I saw him in, "Glengarry Glen Ross". He held his own as the unknown in an incredible ensemble cast (Al Pacino, Alec Baldwin, Jack Lemmon, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin).

He was awesome in the "Wiseguy" show too. You know, on TV.

I thought that was the only clumsy part of the movie, but didn't find it painful really.

I just watched The Usual Suspects again last night, and there are some really great subtle bits Spacey does in there to clue the audience in to what's going on. Terrific stuff.

I thought American Beauty was a boring, pointless movie.

Of course, I don't watch movies for their artistic value, or their innovative thinking, unless the end result is entertaining. AB just didn't work for me in the least.

Spacey has been in some good flicks and many bad ones. He is a pretty decent actor who just doesn't know how to choose a role with any sort of consistancy whatsoever.

I think he knows very well how to choose the roles he wants, it's just that they are rarely commercial vehicles. As long as he can make a living off his craft it looks like he would prefer being true to his acting ideals versus going for the Arnie-style blockbuster bucks. That said, I'm sure he would not mind all his films being blockbusters, that just appears to be a lesser priority.

Every time I watch Usual Suspects, I pick up on something I hadn't before. Considering how many times I've seen it, that's pretty impressive.

Just thought I'd throw that in there since this is a semi-relevant thread.

Kevin Spacey was hilarious when he hosted Saturday Night Live. The Star Wars screen test segments were classic.

Kevin Spacy is one of my favorite actors. I find the movies that he does very enjoyable.
