What a way to start the year.

At home, rededicating their field to honor an AD who worked for them for 50 years..

and then shocking the world and upsetting the #15 team in the nation in OT.

NIU 20, Maryland 13, OT (FINAL)

Northern Illinois is suppose to be the Marshall this year of the MAC. I'm not suprised that they are the "cinderalla" right now.

Crazy ending too. Just proves that the ACC really does suck.

I can't wait to listen to the local sports radio here in Maryland.

(I am a WVU fan.)

I watched the game from start to finish and based on what I saw, this wasn't really an upset. Northern Illinois has a good QB, a running back who came on strong late in the game, and a solid defense. Maryland looked like a collection of guys they found on the streets of College Park. Their offensive line came out in the second half barely moving because they're so out of shape...and there was no discipline to speak of. I said it already in the College Football forum, but if this Maryland team is among the best in the ACC, Miami and Virginia Tech will rule the conference for decades.

That was a crazy OT interception to end it, too...

Was surprised the ref came that close to throwing the flag on the last play but decided to not throw it. A decision that should have been made last year in the Championship game may I add :)

A local morning sports talker predicted this. Everyone thought he was nuts.

I would like to point out that my college football sim had this one was quite close (although Maryland pulled it out both times).

Yes, but I hate him. How can someone who doesn't even know the game very well pick games dead on?

Did anyone actually think Maryland was the 15th best school in the nation?

Has Arnie Spanier resurfaced in Georgia, or is this just some bastard?

Yeah, Arnie spread his love around here in LA for a little while. Glad he hightailed it to Atlanta--he was such a blithering fool.

Yeah...too bad FSSW decided to cut into Southwest Sports Report at EXACTLY 10 PM, which, of course, was the start of OT. Those bastards got an angry call from me. I said "ESPN doesn't do that kind of stuff, they wait to show SportsCenter until the game is over" so maybe they'll pay attention, probably not though.

As for Arnie, I once got on his Hattrick game, that was pretty sweet. I loved him on 1 on 1 sports, then he left and we switched to ESPN here, and that was that. Cool show though. I also liked Bob Kemp a lot, just because it was the only show I know of that has a strict structure that the listeners are expected to follow and is diagramed before each show.

You can listen to him from 5:30-10:00 am (eastern) here:

680 The Fan radio station here in Atlanta (http://www.680thefan.com/)

He is incredible at calling upsets. He makes his picks on Fridays between 9 and 10 am, if there are any gamblers out there. They call him the Stinkin' Genius because of his ability to pick games. He's won a lot of people a lot of money.

If you like college football, you might want to liste from about 10:15 to 1:00. Max Howell was an assistant at Florida State and knows college football. His sidekick, Perry, is an idiot, but I put up with it just to listen to Max.

I disagree. I believe God speaks like John Facenda.

Anybody who has followed MAC football for the last few years should not really be too surprised at this result. MAC teams have histories of pulling off big wins against BCS conferences, although to be honest I felt that Miami (OH) over Iowa would have been a much better bet for this weekend.

Also, adding Marshall to the conference was the best thing they could have done. While they have consistently won the MAC title, they have basically forced other MAC teams to pull themselves up towards their level.

Sorry to threadjack, but I didn't start it. For those who care Arnie's picks today were:

Duke vs. Viginina (Duke +16 to cover)

USF vs. Alabama (USF +points - AND he thinks USF will not just cover, but WIN)

Oklahoma St vs. Nebraska (Ok St. +2 - OKST to win)

Clemson vs. Georgia (Clemson +points - Clemson to win)

Washington vs. Ohio State (Wash +points - Wash to win)

West Virginia vs. Wisconsin (W. Va +points - WVA to win)

Colorado vs. Colorado St (I don't know the line - Colo St. to win)

Man, I must be completely out of it. I missed both college football games and the MTV Awards (OK, I wouldn't have watched the latter even if I remembered it was on). Were both the Miami and Maryland games televised? Usually I don't miss much when I don't turn on ESPN or ESPN2 between 8 and midnight. Maybe I did last night.

On the other hand, I saw 2 quarters of the Bucs spank the Texans.

ESPN had the Miami-La Tech blowout and the Cougars-Ga Tech game, Fox Sports had the NIU-MD game

Arny is the most annoying guy on radio. And I believed that before he hung up on me.

I agree about the Max Howell accent thing. Of course, we all know that God actually has an accent closer to Herman Talmidge. :)
