View Full Version : This may be the greatest thing ever. (TECMO)

There is a programmer working on a version of Tecmo Super Bowl on which we will be able to eventually experience.... TECMO DYNASTIES? He sounds like he plans to work this into his Tecmo Super Bowl Ultra program, and my god... I would do damn near anything to have a draft and career stat tracking added to tecmo.

It may be a short ways off, but the progress he has achieved is pretty encouraging, and it is something that is happening now.. not something that has been stagnant for weeks on end.

Could this be a dream come true for us, the ones who remember the glory days of video football?

HERE IS A LINK TO A THREAD DISCUSSING THE PROGRAM (http://www.knobbe.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1937&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0&sid=1882619752198775298556a22df097b6)

I'm going to wet myself if sometime.. ANYTIME in the future I find myself posting a dynasty report that details my Star Tecmo Running Back Bob Anyones career, from when I drafted him to the day he hangs up his cleats..

this could quite seriosly be the best thing ever. Tecmo Super Bowl is (in my opinion) still the greatest football game ever. While completely different, I put TSB and FOF2001 on a pedastel miles above every other game I'ver ever played in my life.

After the original Tecmo Bowl, my friends and I were psyched beyond belief for the sequel. We both got the game the day it came out and haven't put it down since. Many years later, at age 17, my friend and I would play out season after season (with the other always playing as the weekly opponents, except in the playoffs). When there are two skilled players playing, the game is amazing. We kept physical record books, videotaped the Super Bowls for re-watching later, and would bet on the games. We both wrote extensive articles about games, players, etc... and created a complete fictional league in which all events took place. I still remember the heartbreak as my 15-0-1 Eagles choked in the NFC title game, lost to the computer-led Washington Redskins, and failed in my quest to three-peat. I will take that loss with me to my grave.

I have, and I've run a few plays on coach (and watched a couple COM/COM games). One way of configuring the keyboard is using the arrors for the directional pad, and z and x as b/a. I forget what start and select are, but they're configurable (which I would need to do, I need the directional buttons on the left side :) ).

No league setup as of yet, but you can play games. It's like the guy built his own wrapper around the game mechanism. Very neat.

Unfortunatly I'm losing 10-7 in the second quarter. That bastard Aikman just threw a touchdown to the fur coat wearing pansy-boy Irvin...

Wow .. thats all I can say about this right now.

I just downloaded the game and played a "coach only" mode game. 2004 Eagles VS 1995 Detroit. Interestingly enough , they only ran Sanders 5 times for 40 yards. Mcnabb had a nice game and I ended up winning 23-7 (I had a safety). Ike Reese had 4 sacks! The best part of the game though was the end with the stat printout!!

I can't wait for the final version to be out with the league options.

I see that there is an "online version" with the emulator. Does this mean you can play head to head over the net?

Augh!

Just lost my first game of Tecmo SB in ages, 2004 Browns v. 2004 Falcons. Falcons 27, Browns 23 - Michael Vick runs 40 yards for a touchdown on the last play of the game.

Stats:
Passing:
Couch 2-9, 108 yards
Vick 3-9, 71 yards, Int

Rushing:
Green 11-107, 3 TD
White 4-24
Dunn 10-103
Vick 9-98, 3 TD

Receiving
Johnson 2-108
Crumpler 2-44

I love this game. :)

Just a bump so that I can let you folks who are interested in this game know that I have a dynasty/tournament going on in the Dynasty Forum using this game. I've taken the 60 best and four worst NFL teams from the game and have set them up in a march madness style bracket.

For those who are interested, the developer of TSBU just made a post detailing where he's going with the game and giving a bit of a timeline for it's development. Click here (http://www.knobbe.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1937&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=75&sid=fb096e94d97ce7a2fbb3182b161effdb) to read the post, or else just read it below...

Netplay, will more than likely be the last thing I tackle.

No promises, but I'm looking at about 4-6 weeks for the next
release, which should have season and multi-season mode done.

I hope to have something to beta testers about 1-2 weeks earlier.
I'm not too happy with the way the League configuration screens
work right now, but want to let the beta testers let me know if they
are as confusing as I think they may be or not.

fyi, multi-season mode will allow for the same league to
be played as many times as you want and will compile stats across
all of the seasons played.

single season, only keeps stats for a single season.

Dynasty (which will not be in the next release), will be more of a
management type of league. You start with a league, have to sign,
trade, and draft players. Players retire, all time stats, league and
team records, hall of fame, etc.... I dont have it all
figured out, but my goal is to create something similar to the old
"Omni-play Basketball"

http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=785

I used to love this game.

cthomer5000

It's really awesome how he's basically figured out how to get around the limitations of the game and expand upon it.

It would be perfect if someone could get it to the point where we were only using the Tecmo game engine itself to play the games, and could re-structure divisions, have career stat-tracking, etc..

After a year of silence there's finally a couple of updates from the creator!

hello guys,

I haven't gone back and read the thread, but I intend on doing so soon.

Anyway, an explanation is in order.

Over the past year, I've had many things happen in my life.
I am married with one son and have another son on the way. I've fallen
in love with the commodities market and have been writing
programs to try and capitalize on the futures and options markets.

Also, I just no longer had time for hobby type things with the new
family and all encompassing desire to "beat" the markets.

That said, I've finally finished with my market programming and
I am sataisfied with the results which now leaves more time for me
to start working on TSBUltra again.

Now...THE BAD NEWS...I had a harddrive crash about 6 months ago
and the latest version of TSBUltra source code was lost. I do have
a backup, but I do not know how old it is. My plan is to re-familiarize
myself with what I had been doing (there was a lot of memory
hacking involved that I no longer remember). Anyway, I cannot
make any promises as of a new release date, but rest assured....
"somebody or something" will start working on TSBUltra this year.

thanks for the patience.

And then...

happy to be back.

I took a look at the backup I had, and there is quite a bit missing (it doesn't even have the intro screen)...sigh....

Anyway, that just gives me good reason to go back and do this thing right.
Last time, the code really was nasty looking, just a big hack job to get
stuff done.

This time, I will make the code cleaner. I'll also release the source code
so anyone that wants to can see how it's all done, etc....

the biggest problems I remember were people having trouble running
on some systems unless they were logged in as Administrator (this was
due to the tsbhelper.dll needing to register COM interfaces). I will remove
that necessity.

I also see in the thread (and remember) there being a lot of DirectX
issues with older Windows versions. I plan on removing the need for
DirectX and instead use the allegro library. This will require some
serious rework, but should be worth it.

I'll also make sure to keep the data files consistent so any files that
may have already been created will remain compatible.

I will post when significant milestones have been reached. The first
milestone will be some time away as I translate the DirectX routines
into allegro.

BTW: If there is anyone that is capable of programming in C/C++ and
is willing to help, please let me know.

I'm so happy that he's working on the game again!!! :D :D

moriarty
09-01-2004, 11:47 AM
I'd be happier if he released his program to captialize on the futures/options market.

:D
