The Bengals released their cuts. Lewis certainly sent a message.
Cut
Reinard Wilson
Steve Foley
Danny Farmer
Lamont Thompson
Armegis Spearman
Travis Dorsch
Sean Brewer
Thatcher Szalay
Langston Moore
Ray Jackson
Jawaren Blair
Belton Johnson
Kevin Walter
Some of the guys on the lower half will be pratice squad, but it seems even more apparent that Lewis is calling all of the shots. There is a lot of bonus money in those first few names.

Reinard Wilson?
Steve Foley?
Danny Farmer?
Lamont Thompson?
Armegis Spearman?
Wow the first five listed are a bit of a surprise.. I liked Farmer and though Foley was decent, with Spearman being an adequate backup. Thompson haven't seen much and since Wilson moved to the line I have been satisfied.

What other big time cuts do you think will be made? I haven't been paying too much attention to the preseason so far.

McGee wasn't getting any playing time in the preseason. The 'Boys have been using Dan Campbell as the #1 TE and rookie Jason Witten as #2. They kept James Whalen as the #3 TE because he's also a valuable special teams guy. No need to keep a fourth TE who's making more money than the three in front of him..
Murrell was brought in a few weeks ago by Parcells. He hadn't played in two years, but Parcells wanted to give Hambrick a jolt. They'll probably resign him after week 1, cause if they kept him on the opening day roster then his contract would have been guaranteed...
Rambo hasn't been returning any kicks this preseason, and he's never had that great of hands...

I don't really understand cutting Edwards, other than they want to go with younger players. He *was* doing well, and deserves to be on a team.
Aug. 31 The Lions placed LB BRIAN WILLIAMS on the Reserved/Injured List.
Aug. 31 The Lions placed DT LUTHER ELLISS on the RESERVE/NON FOOTBALL INJURY list.
Aug. 31 The Lions waived the following players: G KERLIN BLAISE, S LAMAR CAMPBELL, RB AUTRY DENSON, CB GERALD DIXON, G/C TYRONE HOPSON, T BEN JOHNSON, WR DAVID KIRCUS, DT ANTWAN LAKE, LB JODY LITTLETON, TE MATT MURPHY, CB JEMEEL POWELL, G TONY SEMPLE and DE JONATHAN TAYLOR.
Aug. 31 The Lions acquired RB OLANDIS GARY from the Buffalo Bills in exchange for a undisclosed future draft pick.

Roundtree and Seaverans will be on the taxi squad.
I guess this means that Brendon Ayanbadejo stuck. I think it is kind of neat when brothers are on the team.

Wow, can't believe that the Titans had the heart to cut O'Donnell.
That guy practically ran the team last year when McNair could only play on Sundays. I guess thats the way it is today's world of the Salary Cap, they can't even keep this guy around for his hard work.

No kidding, you are so right. And this applies not only to football but the real world. But I digress.
I am still in a foul mood because I had to let go a bunch of really good people who worked liked dogs for me all because someone I have never met has no idea how to be financially responsible.

Now if only he will cut Rob Johnson as well, I might actually watch a Redskins game this year.

Some Steeler cuts that may spark interest:
Former third round pick CB Hank Poteat
Running back Chris Fuamuatu Ma'afala
Rookie FB 7th pick JT Wall
Rookie FA who had a good camp Dante Brown
Look for Wall and Brown to make the PS if they aren't picked up. Fu is a nice player to have, but is injured WAY too much.

...and the Bears cut the following:
The Bears reached the mandatory 53-man roster limit Sunday by cutting veterans LB Mike Caldwell, FB Daimon Shelton and CB Roosevelt Williams and placing guard Rex Tucker on injured reserve, meaning that he's lost for the season.
The team also waived cornerback Jason Goss, guards Bryan Anderson and Shane Grice, defensive ends Bobby Setzer and Chris Demaree and fullback Jason McKie.

R. Williams of the Bears, Robert Edwards, and Ma'afala are three guys that could be solid depth players. Look for the Saints to try and sign Edwards to backup Deuce, they were talking to the Dolphins about trading for him recently. I know Williams has had some trouble making plays, and his speed isnt great, but I think he would be a solid backup CB for a lot of teams(he was a 2 or 3 round draft pick just 2 years ago). Not once have I seen Ma'afala not look good when hes gotten field time.

Can anyone tell me how the waivers work? I know the Bengals get first pick, but does it apply to every person released or do they just get the choice of one guy and then it progresses like the draft? I'm curious because I expect Lewis to take three or four guys if he can get them. He has made it clear he isn't satisfied with the attitude and effort of some of the team.

Who wants Taco Wallace? Apparently having Seneca Wallace already on the team meant we couldn't afford the S. and T., so one had to be cut.
On a more serious note, I would expect to see somebody pick up Doug Evans (and why we cut him after Springs got hurt is a bit of a mystery to me).

I was under the impression that the Dolphins had made it clear all along that they were not going to keep Edwards but had gotten him a lot of snaps in the preseason to showcase him so that he could hook up with somebody. I could be wrong, though.

So I suppose this makes it official that Kirk Farmer won the third-string QB job in St. Louis. Does it say something about the Rams that their No. 3 QB was the backup for a team that went 5-7 his senior season or does it say something about Brad Smith that as a freshman he was starting ahead of a guy who made an NFL roster?
Not terribly surprised at the Snoop Minnis cut, although there was a report I heard over the weekend where Minnis said he was told he made the team. He may have based that on his two preseason TD catches. But the No. 5 WR has to play special teams which meant Minnis had no shot. Curtis Jackson was probably closer to getting the job that Minnis, but the Chiefs really like Horn's versatility.
Be interesting to see who makes the practice squad. I'm betting Joe Hall gets one slot.

Only other notable player the Bears have released is FB Damien Shelton. He'll definatly pick up with someone else.
Kinda irked about Williams getting cut. I have a gut feeling he'll be good.
Here's hoping the Bears pick up Robert Edwards, though.

What college did Farmer go to, the name doesn't seem familar.
As for Robert Edwards, I love the guy and have the utmost respect for him because of what he's gone through to get back to the NFL, but he's a below avg back at this point in his career. He's at the same level of most of the 3rd rb's in the NFL.

my understanding is that they get firsties on every player put on waivers.
if I recall correctly, waivers are only for players eligible for restricted free agency (1-4 year players). After 4 years players go straight to FA.

The Bengals still have suprises left. Neil Rackers got cut and Shayne Graham from Carolina took his place. Greg Scott is also gone with Keyon Whiteside getting picked up. I don't think too many Bengals feel secure in their jobs right now!

Whatever happened to Snoop Minnis? Last I heard about him (about 3 years ago, I think), he was the next big thing, sleeper WR, etc. Is he just not that good?

Decent hands, average speed, is short, and doesn't play special teams. Would be a decent 4th or 5th receiver, but teams need that player to also contribute to special teams. Minnis doesn't, so he's gonna have trouble sticking in the league.
Vince
09-01-2003, 05:33 PM
Thanks, The_herd. Makes sense...you can't afford to have a 4th or 5th WR who doesn't contribute to special teams...they don't have enough of an impact on the game to merit a roster spot.

The Farmer on the Rams went to Mizzou. Martz obviously likes his potential, given the slot he "earned." He has the tangibles, but is green as hell.
Rams cut the injured Tim Herring (safety), and traded for Rich Coady to come back. Translated, that means "safety is a very weak spot for the Rams."

The Cowboys released Woody Danztler today so that they could pick up CB Jemeel Powell, who was released by the Lions.
Very sad. I like Woody. True, he doesn't have a real position, but he's a very good return man and has tons of athletic ability. I hope that they sign him to the practice squad like they did last year so that we don't lose him forever. Guess we have to see if anyone claims him off of waivers...

The Niners cut Brandon Doman as their 3rd QB and kept Ken Dorsey, although Doman did have better numbers then Dorsey, Dorsey just looks like too much of a sleeper to give up, and he came in with a Clutch 4th quarter drive vs. the Raiders that really impressed the coaches. They also Released Jim Flanigan, who was supposed to start at DT this year, but Anthony Adams took his job because of his motor that doesn't stop.
