i can't get the FOF2 file anymore from DIgital River. this is why i won't ever purchase anything not on CD-ROM again. i basically rented the game for a couple years. here is the customer service response from DR:

"Dear Anthony,

We have found your original order from 1999. Unfortunatly that item is no longer supported. The files have been removed from our servers.

Thank you for contacting the online store's Customer Care Center. If you
have any further questions or concerns, please "reply" to this e-mail.

Sincerely,
Robert Go.
Customer Care Center
Case ID 5257281"

this sucks. shouldn't they keep the game files? i say they should refund me my money if they can't provide me with a replacement game file. at least i could use that money to buy FOF4.

DAMN.

This has been my primary concern with online licensing. In the fight against piracy, online licensing has unreasonably and unfairly swung the pendulum against the consumer.

Online licensed games essentially have a clock. If your hard drive crashes or you buy a new system and the game is no longer supported, you are pretty much SOL.

I'm with you HA. I don't mind purchasing a downloaded game, but I would prefer not to buy any game requiring an online license. You basically forfeit a lot of your rights as a consumer. It basically is renting the game, which I wouldn't necessarily have a problem with if that sold it that way. If I bought the game knowing there was a four-year window, that's one thing. But having the game taken from you is another.

That really sux, only about 4 years out of that purchase that you knew the pitfalls of going in.

So, EagleFan, you're saying that since it was the only option available, even though it wasn't a very good one, no one should have purchased FOF2 (and thus shut out any potential future incarnations of FOF)?

I'm really not sure what you're trying to say here (other than picking on HA).

Didn't I read that Viatech is handling the licensing issues for FOF2 even though it was Digital River initially.

Ah yes, from the Front Office Football FAQ.

I'm having trouble with the electronic license for Front Office Football 2001, 2002 and/or Front Office Football 2. Can you help?

ViaTech handles the electronic licensing for Front Office Football. Please visit Viatech Customer Support for more information.

so, you deleted the install file, so you can't play it anymore? Would you throw away a cd, then complain that they won't send you a replacement 4 years later?

Obviously if you kept the install, you'd be able to play it... not really their fault you dropped the ball.

HA has been through this before. Someday, there will be a cure.

It always good to have a reminder of what to do, as Digital River is not the most reliable company in the world.

What I'm saying is that he knew the problem going in. He chose to risk it. It's not like it's been a month since the purchase. He's acting like he got robbed when the risks were known.

What was it, something like 30 dollars? 2 cents per day seems pretty fair.

dola: As was also stated, he's whined about this before. Instead of going to Jim, he comes on here and whines. Are we all supposed to just say "Poor HA, the world is so unfair to him".

time goes on, people upgrade their PC's. i've lost a lot of files and programs on my old PC, but wow, i have them on CD-ROM, so i can choose to reinstall.

and what's this crap about i "chose to risk it"? this isn't skydiving - i paid for a product, i'd like to have access to it.

if the the game was on cd-rom and i lost it after all these years, my prob. but the choice was made not to have the game on a hard-copy, it's not my fault if i need a new install file after all this time, i can't be expected to transfer every single program every time i change PC's. i uninstall/reinstall games all the time - that's my business.

Easy Mac

so put it on a cd rom. its not their fault you didn't have forethought to backup files you felt were essential... and I'd say a 4 year old file is obviously essential to you.

And it is your fault, its your fault you upgraded your computer. IF you can't be bothered to transfer every file, why should they be bothered to help you.

Just goes to show how unorganized DR is. FOF2 is indeed still on their servers as I just downloaded in 2 minutes ago. I've also uploaded it here as I know some other need it: http://www.mysportshost.com/frontofficefball.exe

Further, "Toni P." was able to provide me with my order ID and login location just last week.

You guys are just going after HA because, well, he's HA. I don't see why you're backing DR.

Of the $30 he paid, a portion goes to Jim, and the other part goes to DR. The part that goes to DR is supposed to take care of stuff exactly like this. How is it fair that HA paid DR to support the elicense for him, and they aren't doing it?

Solecismic
09-01-2003, 07:39 PM
No, none of the $30 went to me, just to clear that up. I was under contract, and paid a flat fee to write the code.

Read the item I've quoted. HA is not out $30. The game is still supported by ViaTech. Digital River has been out of the picture for more than a year.

What's hilarious is H.A.'s response on that item. I explained to him who to contact, and he seemed quite happy with the result.

I contacted ViaTech for my lost order number and they were unable to help (although they usually are). They referred me to DR, who was able to provide the information (given a 4 business day waiting period).

"And it is your fault, its your fault you upgraded your computer. IF you can't be bothered to transfer every file, why should they be bothered to help you."

this statement is so completely stupid and wrong you should castrate yourself to ensure that no other humans are spawn from your non-intelligence.

so i should never upgrade my PC just to keep a text based sim game on my harddrive? i not only have to buy the game, but pay extra money for a blank cd-r to save it onto? seriously, just jump off a cliff.

i have no problem with downloading games - provided that they are always accessible for me to get in the event i lose the game file.

i'm not whining or crying. i posted because i'm obviously not happy about this issue. this is a thread about a FOF game, and last time i checked FOFC didn't stand for Front Office Fags Central (although sometimes i wouldn't doubt that). i don't have to go to Jim, Eaglefan, he has nothing to do with the game.

i'll try to go through Viatech, as stated by Jim. i really don't like the attitude by him nor by some of the other's around here. i purchased the game legally, i've been a longtime customer. i can see if i'm complaining about this cuz i had a cracked version of the game and i lost it. i properly paid for the game, i don't see how i'm the bad guy here.

your answer is illogical.

The game cost around what $30? If it came out on CD, it would cost around 40-45 after CD pressing and shipping. A blank CD is $.40 at most. So yes, I would say you should do that. If its that important to play 4 years later, why not think of having a backup install in case something happens. I have all my downloaded installs on either floppies or CD's in case something fucks up. Its called being smart. If your too lazy, so be it.

And thats just it... is a CD accessible if you lose it? Should you get a new one if you scratch it (comparable to a computer failure, or maybe more accurately, should you get a CD of the Beatles because you owned the album, but you can't get it on your CD player?) So far your arguments have been completely circular. You say that if you lose a CD, its ok, your fault. But if you lose an install file, you should be given the game again? Crack reasoning... people such as yourself should only be allowed to fuck sheep, that way the human race isn't adversely affected by your stupidity and laziness.

Hey, what do you know, Hell Atlantic is back.
Man, where have you been?

Anthony
09-02-2003, 09:54 AM
i think Eacy Mac/EagleFan work for DR or Viatech.

i don't have to make any excuses. the PC i had that game on didn't have a cd burner, and my floppy disk drive didn't work. i now have a new, monster machine, and won't have to worry about things like this happening again because i have many different option to save the game on.

but had they offered the game on cd-rom, we wouldn't be here now. how do you accidentally delete a cd-rom (other than throwing it out). they open themselves up to future problems cuz of the medium they choose to offer the game on.

You really are coming across as whiny here.

Just a quick question - you pay to download a file, and bitch that it did not come on CD. Why would you not write the install file to CD, or some other sort of backup media? Why would you ever pay to download a file and then not back up the file you paid for?

CD's can go bad too. There's no permanent solution, but in any case I think it's been shown you can download the game and reinstall it (unlike a couple cases I have where the CD's are bad and I can't reinstall the game now).

Well, HA, I never cared for people who are even more rude than I am on-line, but I still have a soft spot in my heart for FOF diehards. So you can find the FOF2 Executable at my site if it helps.

What are you doing with the hard drive from your old machine? If it's still accessible, maybe you could install it as a slave drive on your new machine (even temporarily) and transfer what you need.
