Preseason Post-Game Show, Game 1

Participants:
Jack Del Rio, Jacksonville Jaguars
Vita Stellino, Florida Times-Union
Brian Sexton, Jaguars Network Radio
Matt Robinson, WTEV-47

Stellino: How’s it feel to get your first win?

Del Rio: It is nice but this is only the preseason and we have some areas in which we need to improve before the season starts.

Robinson: Congrats on the win, what are the areas that need improvement?

Del Rio: Specials teams sticks out the most, we missed 2 field goals, fumbled a kick return and fumbled a punt return. These are things we can’t continue to do and expect to get were we want to be. Poor special teams play can cost us a shot at the playoffs this year.

Robinson: What about Chris Hanson?

Del Rio: I like Chris a lot. I think he will be a Pro Bowl punter this year. He was unbelievable yesterday. If I remember correctly he pinned them at the 5, 2, and 1 yard line.

Sexton: Going into the game you said you wanted to find a backup left tackle and a nickel corner. Did anyone impress you enough that you would say you have found either one of these guys?

Del Rio: No, not really, Kiwaukee Thomas played well at cornerback but I’m reluctant to make him my guy just yet. I’d like to get Mathias some action the next couple weeks. As for the left tackle back up, the way I look at, if after the game an offensive linemen’s name is not in your head then he must not have done a bad job. Kind of like the refs you only remember the bad ones. I need to review the game with my other coaches and we still have three preseason games yet.

Stellino: Do you think Leftwich holding out affected his performance yesterday?

Del Rio: Byron didn’t play bad, but he didn’t play well either. I think him holding out probably isn’t allowing him to be as sharp as he can be. He will continue to get most of the snaps in the preseason.

Stellino: Is Brunell still your starting quarterback?

Del Rio: Yes. Unless Byron just comes out and does some incredible things the next three weeks Mark will be starting against Carolina.

Robinson: So there is a possibility that Byron could start against Carolina?

Del Rio: It is Mark’s job to lose, we need to give Mark a few more pass attempts next week.

Stellino: What about David (Garrard)?

Del Rio: Going into the last drive David didn’t impress me much, but then it seemed like he got into a zone of some sorts. I look forward to seeing David get some more snaps this preseason.

Del Rio: Lets move on. There are 55 players on this team.

Sexton: Ok, so who impressed you yesterday?

Del Rio: I’m probably most impressed with Micah Ross, he had 5 receptions for 32 yards. He had two drops but both would have been spectacular plays if he would have been able to make them. He showed enough speed to get behind the defense but Byron just overthrew him trying to avoid the safety. That’s something we will work on this week though. Ross seems to be a good route runner with enough speed, probably our #2 or #3 receiver right now.

Robinson: Coach, is there any players that should be concerned about their spot on the roster?

Del Rio: I think there are a few players who need to wake up and realize that just because they are big names doesn’t mean they are guaranteed anything.

Del Rio: Okay guys I’m done for today, I’ve got a meeting to go to.

Del Rio walks into his office and slams the door, heard yelling “You better get your head out of your ass or you are gone. Do you realize you fumbled the ball three times yesterday?”

I finished game one and lost 19-13 in OT. To only find out my roster file is corrupt and after 2 years it skips the draft and whole offseason.
