View Full Version : Kicking the ball in Jersey - WOW

It isn't often I'm amazed at a football stat, but this one is almost mind boggling. I went through the past two regular seasons for both the Giants and Jets. I wanted to see how their kickers did at home vs. opposing players. Here are the numbers:
Giants Home Kickers: 31/36 (86%)
Jets Home Kickers: 19/30 (63%)
Road Kickers vs. Giants: 21/32 (66%)
Road Kickers vs. Jets: 24/26 (92%)
Totals: 95/124 (77%)
------------------------------------------------------
The only opposing kicker to miss a field goal against the Jets? Jason Elam missed both of them last November. The other 17 times the Jets have been at home, their fans never saw a missed kick by the opposing kicker. Giants fans, meanwhile, saw 11 missed kicks in the 18 home games they went to.
Whatever Hall's excuses for missing his kicks were, there isn't any data to suggest that the Meadowlands actually impacted his kicking in a negative way. Maybe he doesn't LIKE to kick there, but the opposing kickers in his games didn't seem to have a problem with it.
Maybe the Jets need to work on some field goal blocking drills. :)

Better yet, pass out a bunch of yellow jerseys for people sitting behind the end zones. Of course, they'd have to put on a green or blue one when the home team was kicking.
That's a pretty amazing stat though, especially considering that outdoor stadiums are typically more difficult to kick in.

Maybe they need to learn how to operate the tunnel doors correctly. :D

That's what I suspect. No matter what anybody says, the Giants have been notorious for this over the years.

Maybe the sample size is insufficient to be meaningful. Those are pretty wide variances without much explanation.

Aliens root for the Giants? I thought they rooted for the Cowboys.

I just collected some information - you might find it interesting:
Home A - 12/25 = 48%
Home B - 13/24 = 54%
Away A - 11/30 = 37%
Away B - 16/26 = 62%
Any thoughts on the trends at work there?

There could be a simpler explaination (although I'm still partial to the tunnel door theory).
Two factors to consider:
1. The Giants have a better offense and a better kicker than the Jets. The Giants kicker gets shorter attempts and makes more of them.
2. The Giants have a better defense than the Jets. Jets opponents have a shorter field when trying field goals.
Otherwise, it's totally the tunnel doors. :D

Maybe the tunnel door people are Giants' fans, and operate them in reverse for the Jets on purpose.
That must be it! :)

QS,
Yeah, the sample size is very low. I didn't have the time to bother going through the past 10 years. I just found it a little odd that opposing kickers did that well against the Jets at the Meadowlands. Had I guessed, I would have figured the figures would be closer to the Giants opponents.
Maybe sometime when I'm bored and have nothing to do, I'll go back through and go back 5 years. I'll also add distance totals and see if anything can be drawn from that. The results don't mean anything without more data being collected. . . but I do think they are interesting enough to research that data.
(God, I hope was undersandable in some way)

No no no...they root for the Dolphins (or the Falcons when Vick is healthy)... ;)

I think it shows Jimmie Hoffa is a Giants fan and hates the Jets.

Very understandable - I'm not at all suggesting that you're being irresponsible in showing one year's worth of data. All I'm saying is that with that small s sample size, we have to keep "pure dumb luck" as the most obvious candidate to explain much/most/all of the variances.

And for what it's worth... my data from above was collected by flipping coins, and assigning the purely random results to groups labeled Home and Away. Sure seems like there's something afoot there, too. We probably would have noted the 8-in-a-row streak in one of those sets and pointed out how "red hot" it was at that time... even while the likelihood of any given outcome was exactly the same 50% as any other time.
I'm sure Dan Snyder would be willing to sign the "Tails" to a nice little multi-year contract with a very big bonus. :D
