Who are the most overrated player in the NFL, past or present. Right now I might go with Charles Woodsen. I really want him to be good but my man consistently gets beat by the top receivers in the league. I think He is a good hitter and is playing out of position. he should be moved to free safety. Every time I watch him two words go through my mind: Jason Sehorn.

As much as this is gonna hurt me and as much as I am a Bears fan (*sigh*) I have to say Brian Urlacher. My reasoning;
since he has signed his big contract he really hasn't done well. I also know that DC Greg Blache is not making correct calls most of the time. Urlacher is good but he sure isn't as good as the media says he is. Does he have the potential to be great? Yes, I think so but he isn't there right now. I am a big Urlacher fan. I love the guy. He's fast, gets to the ball but he has issues sheading blocks and he doesn't hit hard enough. Bear fans please don't flame me for this because like you, I love my Bears but Urlacher *at this point* is overated.

Jason Sehorn was genuinely excellent for about a 2 year period. He's never been the same since the knee injury, and the Giants were insane for giving him that huge contract after the injury.
Warren Sapp is currently incredibly overrated.
Keyshawn has never been one of the best receivers in the league. He's always been second tier, always will be.

I don't know how he's rated around the league, but here in Wisconsin a lot of people think Mike McKenzie is a top-notch CB, but he's really not.

From my Steelers, I'd have to say OLB Jason Gildon. Yeah, he might get double-digit sacks every year and is supposedly almost Pro-Bowl calibur, but he plays VERY VERY poor pass defense and just seems to tackle poorly as well. I still don't see why the Steelers have let go a few other 'backers, but have proceeded to keep him around. With the salary cap getting very tight in the next couple years, I hope he's the first to go

He is clearly the best tight end in the league.
As long as we are not counting Tony Gonzalez and Todd Heap, right? ;)
And he most definetly is overrated. He was billed as the second coming last year and would revolutionize the game... um.. no.

Urlacher is having a horrible year. He's just not playing good football now. That said, when he has DT's that can let him run free, he's one of the best there is. The Bears are not putting him in a position to succeed and to play to his strengths. You could take any LB in the league and make him overrated.
As for overrated right now, here are some names that come to the top of the list for me:
Dan Morgan - He can't stay healthy. Even when he does, he doesn't make enough plays.
Mike Alstott - The worst 6-time pro bowler in the history of the game.
Orlando Pace - 3 consecutive poor seasons. Playing better this year. Last year he was horrible.
Vonnie Holiday - The guy lives off of one game a year. He has 10 sacks in his last 17 games. 8 of them have came in two games. This year, after game one, he has a total of 6 tackles and 1 sack in 6 games.
Keyshon Johnson - Do I really need to write anything here?

Deion Sanders comes to mind as well.

Deion was overrated, but he genuinally was the best cover CB in the league. I wonder if we should make a distinction for good players who are overrated and mediocre players who are overrated (and are thought of as good players).

Urlacher, I submit, is playing badly this year because he's had to go back to making all the plays himself (at least mentally). Without anyone else shedding blockers or stopping the offense, Urlacher is overpursuing, using too much speed and not enough positioning. Two years ago, if Urlacher missed on a play, someone would back him up. Now, it's first and 10 and do it again. He's also getting more blockers than ever before because the other teams are too easily pancaking the guys in front of him and then driving into the linebacker corps.
I quadruple Jeremy Shockey. Best TE in the league?? Best WR wannabe playing the TE spot. I'd still take the elderly Shannon Sharpe over Shockey, at least for this season.
I'd also nominate Jerry Rice. At this point, watching how second-rate CBs manhandle him, he's about a fifth-stringer.
And, I'll nominate Priest Holmes. Oh, blast me if you will, but I suggest the KC O-line is horrendously underrated (as in, let's put the line up with the best lines in the last 2 decades), and that Priest isn't as close to god-dom as he is said to be. Top 10 in the league, maybe top 5, but I could name several others I'd rather have.

Well I think Shockey is an arrogant, cockey guy who has yet to live up to his own personal PR machine. Of course I must admit that I'm an Eagles fan so that might have something to do with it.
Honestly though, I think Shockey is overrated. That's not to say that he isn't a good TE because he is, I will admit that. I just think that he talks a lot and he doesn't walk the walk to merit his own hype machine.
I believe that Tony Gonzalez is the best TE in the league with Todd Heap right behind.
Edit- Yeah, what ISiddiqui said. ;)

I'd go with McNabb first... Rushy hit the nail on the head. That guy has so many freaking endorsments its unbelieveable... and for what??? being a slightly above average QB for a few seasons?? pfft!!! gimmie a break....
I also agree with Urlacher this season.... he ain't done shit. I've watched 2 Bears games this season (for some reason) and he didn't show me shit.
I don't on the other hand, thing Shockey is overrated.... and if he is, its just a little bit. He's a top 3 Tight end in the NFL. The freaking Eagles put a cornerback on him last sunday. You know your a badass tight end when teams stick CB's on ya. I would also like to state that i hate the guy and i think he's a dick. Im by no means a Shocky fan, but i give credit where credit is due.

Hell in his one game this year, this guy suffered a concussion in the first quarter, and still threw for 350 yards. He was moving half speed, and he almost overcame the six fumbles. Bulger has been good, Warner was great before the injuries.

Let's not mix up "overrated" and "under-achiever".
Urlacher is an underachiever, this year. Same for Owens (until last week-end's game) and it goes as well for Keyshawh who CLEARLY has the ability, but he's not playing up to his talent.
To me, the #1 "overrated" player is Mike Alstott.
Followed by Mike Vick.
Sure Vick is very talented, but as of now, hasn't won enough (of course he hasn't done enough yet, my gosh, has only PLAYED one full year as a starter!) but the writers seem to already prepare a bronze in Canton. This is too much. Let the guy have a career.
So Vick is overrated at this point.

It's pretty much known now that Kurt never had a concussion in that game. That story was "invented" by Martz to allow Warner to save face in his benching. Those 350 yards are the best illustration of why passing yards is a meaningless stat - that game was a primer for bad NFL QB play. I am tired of debating how good Warner was during the 3 years, but right now, he flat out stinks.

Gonzalez is a receiver and nothing more. He doesn't have nearly the blocking ability that Shockey has. Heap (from what I've seen) is a so-so blocker and excellent receiver.
Looking at the pure impact Shockey had on his team last year, I'm quite comfortable in saying he is the best tight end in the league. Of the 3, he most frequently completely takes over a game.
EagleFan
10-22-2003, 06:33 AM
Shockey is also the one that will blow up the fastest with a key drop or fumble so that pushes him right back below the other two.
McNabb I would put in the underachieving pile. Something hasn't been right since he returned from his injury. Prior to that he was living up to his reputation. This is just my opinion but I think that one of his main problems is that he gets so concerned with building up his body during the offseason that he doesn;t concentrate enough on his quarterbacking skills. I keep hearing about these intense "would kill a normal man" type workouts that he puts himself through to bulk up during the offseason but I never hear about him practicing throwing a post, or anything remotely related to being a quarterback.
Vick is my choice for over-rated. He just flat out hasn't done it enough to earn the status that he is given. I think he could achieve that status, just that he hasn't yet.

Shockey is good but very overrated.
He redinfied the TE position by making an offense around him?
Look at Baltimore, all their passing O goes through the leauges best Tight End, Todd Heap.
He is by far the best, because he can do it all, unlike a Shockey or Gonzalez.

Huh? Keyshawn has never really been a top flight WR. He's a good WR who blocks well. If we do say he's a top flight WR, however, he's done nothing to drop off of that this year. Last year he had 76 catches for 1088 yards and 5TD.
This year he's on pace for 69 catches, 975 yards and 3 TD's. . . and he's missed 1/2 of a couple of games and played gimpy at other times this year.
Gonzalez is a receiver and nothing more. He doesn't have nearly the blocking ability that Shockey has. Heap (from what I've seen) is a so-so blocker and excellent receiver.
Heap can be a devastating blocker. He wasn't early on in his career but has developed into one of the best blocking TE in the game. It isn't only that offensive line that has allowed Lewis to rack up that much yardage against defenses stacking the box against Boller. He's a better blocker than Shockey at this point. I'd rate Shockey just ahead of Tony G in that department now, just by a fraction.

Joey Galloway. He still knows only two patterns. Definitely overrated for the money.
Cornerbacks are a little hard to call overrated because they in general depend on pressure, but I would label Bobby Taylor and Champ Bailey as overrated. Neither one of them I would consider "gamebreakers" which I have heard throughout their career.

McNabb had some GOOD seasons, but never to the extent that he has been given credit for, when your defense is barely allowing 10 points a game of course you're gonna win... and that is his supporters biggest defence, that he wins.
He's certainly underachieving now, no doubt, but he definitely is over-rated.

Urhlacher for sure. Dr Z in SI interviewed Giant great Carl Banks and asked him about the U-man and Banks dissed him hard as a guy who is only as good as the D-line in front of him. I also recall he used the S-word, as in soft.
Someone mentioned Ricky Williams. I have to laugh at that. Try running with Jay Fiedler as your QB and see how far you get. Not very when you are facing 8 men in the box every friggin play.
Now for my personal pick I don't recall anyone mentioning. My own Dolphins' Sam Madison. He hasn't been any good for at least three years, yet they still put him in the pro bowl last year. He was a gaping chest wound in the Dolphins' secondary last year. The reincarnation of Mr All or Nothing himself, Terrell Buckley, who for some reason Miami felt compelled to bring back.
