Am I correct in assuming that we'll all have the option of renaming our teams and/or cities?

Regardless of professional vs. fictional roster, I think the majority of my enjoyment would come from building my fictional franchise.

Ideally I think it would be pretty fun if we broke up the divisions geographically, so that we were roughly aligned by our real-world locations.

Plus cuervo, I wouldn't want all the work you've been doing for me to go to waste. :)

:D I had been wondering about divisions and such. I was thinking that we could associate each team with a number and use a random generator to determine an order for chosing teams/locations and possibly division.

Our "rival" league is already on the ball with chosing cities etc, but we haven't decided what to do as far as franchises go yet, but we do have time.

Pick a favorite yet? :)

North, South, East and West would work... of course that means north, south, east and west of Texas.

I would like to be in Senator's division if at all possible, we have a brain to share.

tossing out alignment ideas (I've had a lot of time on my hands this afternoon):

This is based of everyones listed locations on their profile, and could give us a surprisingly good starting point to work from. This is of course assuming a majority of us would want this sort of setup.

This brings to mind an issue--when someone takes over a team, will they get to pick a new city and/or mascot for the team, or will our choices here be set in stone?

Also, I am cool with putting my fictional team anywhere. New Orleans is great, but I can start us wherever a team needs to be to fit the schedule.

I think second generation owners should get the chance to move the teams if they wish, but doing so within the game's own dynamic would be preferable. At least for a geographic move - I guess a nickname could change at any time.

I'm up for being located anywhere.

Very good issue. I think this is the sort of stuff we'll need to iron out before starting the league.

Initially changing the city names is purely cosmetic. As for actually moving to a different city within the game, we'll have to figure out how to handle that.

I like the regional idea but perhaps instead of using regional names for conferences we could use famous NFL (or fictional) players like:

Dean Houston
Brock Sheriff
Walter Payton etc.

That would prevent the "why is Reno in the Deep South?"

Or we could use the fictional names for player awards.

Not a bad idea at all, it would also help get around the inevitable problem when a team in the Deep South gets replaced by someone living in Hawaii.

Maybe we could start with a geographicl basis (just for the hell of it) but actually name the divisions after FOFC legends/terminology.

The Dola Division, etc...

Exactly. Maybe 10 people would get teams they would actually want to run, and the rest of us would either be running a team we could care less about, or even worse - running Arizona or Cincinnati.

I like the idea of being in divisions geographically, based on our real life locations. Specifically so I could compete with Celeval, and the two Dogs since I have met them all in RL and will see them from time to time. (I don't think I've met Buzzbee, but maybe... I'm not trying to leave you out of the love, I just don't know you as well.)

I also like the idea of renaming our teams to personalize them a bit, though I think this might make more sense if we went with fictional players.

Finances could become an issue with five teams in metro Atlanta. That's another area we need to make some decisions on.

This is assuming we can actually "change" the starting cities of the franchises. In former versions, we couldn't do anything beyond just changing the city name (which had no effect on what market it was actually stationed in).

So, unless Jim has given us the option to actually select which cities we start with, the 4 Georgia teams will really be Atlanta, Carolina, New Orleans, and Tampa Bay (for example).

KWhit
10-22-2003, 04:02 PM
I agree SD. I was more thinking that we could perhaps be in the same division but pick different cities for our teams. If we did go the fictional team name route, I wouldn't mind putting my team in Florida or Tennessee or somewhere else if we wanted to do a Southeastern division.

EDIT: missed the few posts above... I was assuming here that we could customize the actual location of franchises at the start when I made this post.

I assume we'll want to try to stick close to cities that exist in the database (since apparently the location of the city makes a difference). Is it possible/will we allow to change the name of the city we want as long as its reasonably close so we can use names not in the database?

A couple of examples:

change Indianapolis, IN to Columbus, IN - difference of about 30 miles
change Cheyenne to Wyomining - to use a state instead of a city
change San Francisco to Golden State
etc, etc

Here is a proposed Divisional alignment, based on everyones current geographical location. Of course if we are forced to pick from existing cities, this could become moot. Also, if people in the "pick your cities and teams" thread move around, this could become moot as well. Anyway, here it is.

Oh, and albionmoonlight, I just couldn't find a good place and since New Orleans has a heavy French influence, I figgered I'd put you with Darkiller.

Actually, I should not have posted that. I do not care who/where my team is all that much. That post was more about the anal-retentive engineer in me insisting that everything conform to my concept of logic in the world.

Besides, do we really have any idea who is going to be good at this? (Except knowing I will suck) I am thinking that people who have been very good at beating the AI might have trouble against more unpredictable opponents. That said, given that I live so close to Fairfax, I intend on having a bitter rivalry with Bee's team, so want to be in his division.
