View Full Version : FOFCL: List your city (if fictional is decided)

This is to help with alignments and stuff in case we go that route with a fictional league.

I would like my team in Fort Worth (Texas). If Senator wants Fort Worth, I will take Waco.

edit: If we can somehow edit the starting cities, I would actually like one of the New Jersey markets (Newark?), while still calling it North Plainfield.

I'll take Stillwater, OK. If that doesn't work for the divisions or puts me in an impossible population situation, I'll go with Fort Collins, CO. (I'd pick Denver, but I'd like to have a gap between Bucc and my team. We can both compete for the ticket dollars of the Denver crowd)

I wonder if we'll be able to edit the city data. If not, teams located in larger cities with little competition may have an advantage. I could see Dallas, Denver, St. Louis, and possibly Chicago having a distinct advantage over places like Boston, Philly, Pittsburg, and DC.

Would be interesting to set all the city data equal so that no team has a financial advantage.

I agree. I also think we ought to have like a ranking sytem vote instead of just vote for one.

I'm all for whatever you guys decide is the best way to go with the cities, but I'd like to toss out some food for thought. There will inevitably be some turnover with the franchises, and it could be problematic finding replacement GM's to identify with the fictional cities. It would probably be more appealing for someone from Gresham, Oregon to take over the New Orleans Saints instead of taking over the Biloxi Boll Weevils.

I'd like to open this topic for discussion -- pros and cons -- and let's see if we can reach a consensus on this issue.

I'd like to play in Maassluis, Netherlands.
If relocating due to FOF's coordinates does not work, It be happy to land in the Netherlands Antilles.
Or if I have to take a city already in the game, I wouldn't mind being on a team located in some city that can be linked with my country, like New York.

But if location is largely superficial, i.e. we get into the file and change the name and not the coordinates (though I'm guessing someone will write a utility to do that, too) we can just rename the city in the cities file. I don't know if that would be that big a problem, as long as that turnover isn't constant. As for geographic alignment, I don't know if that should really be much of a concern anyhow. If there's an outlier here or there, so be it. The NFL still has its St. Louis' and Dallas' of the world.

If we're stuck with real NFL city names I'll take Indianapolis and figure out a nickname later. If we can edit the city names I'd like to change it to Columbus (IN).

I think you make some very good points and raise some issues:

How easy will it to be for us to really change the starting cities? Jim has already stated this is not a game feature, so we'd need a 3rd party program in order to do this.

Do we really want to deal with finances?

As the game stands we can change our starting cities in a completely cosmetic fashion, by just changing the city names to reflect where we want our teams to be stationed. While there will be some strange weather conditions at times, I think we all have the imagination to overcome minor issues like that. Therefore, we can appear to have 4 teams stationed in the Atlanta Metro area, but they'll really each be playing in the markets of Carolina, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, and not killing each other financially.

This would also be favorable for when a new owner takes over a team. They can easily "move" the Princeton Snobs to become the Los Angeles Smog. That way we don't have to worry about someone taking over a team they're not really interested in, they'll have the chance to move them (again, in a completely cosmetic way).

I don't think any of us will care if we're raking in the largest profit as long as we're going 3-13 every year. The spirit of this multi-player league is to compete on the football field, not to compare our bottom lines. For these reasons, I'm in favor of us ignoring the bottom line finances.

I do however think we should create some sort of cap outside the game to determine coach and scouting hirings. Otherwise, what's to stop any of us from paying 100 million a year to ensure we bring in the best coach?

GrantDawg
10-23-2003, 10:14 AM
Jim said there would already be a limit on what you can spend on coaches, so that is there. I don't see any reason for us to concetrate on the bottom line. This should be about the teams and what happens on the field.

cthomer brought up a good point that was what I based my opinion that we start with fictional cities on. I'm assuming we're going to leave the original economic options as is, so my San Luis Obispo Burn will really be playing in a pre-established NFL market, not really San Luis Obispo. Like cthomer said, if this is the case, we can easily 'move' a franchise if a new owner takes over.

I agree with GrantDawg and cthomer in that I think most of us are more worried about on-the-field performance than the bottom line.

Yes the facemask color is fine.

If the darker purple still doesnt highlight the logo, then try and switch the green from the facemask to the helmet, purpleize the facemask and add a purple stripe up top on the helmet.

If that doesnt work, then use white helmet, purple facemask, purple stripe.

The sad thing is, I don't even need to look at that photo to know what it is....I ran across it in my google search too (didn't bother to click on the thumb though).

Note that I said leaning towards....not 100% yet. But for the record, the name stems from when my son was 2 and was a bit more unruly than he is now (he, like my wife, is a redhead).

With that name I see a more scarlet color and russian/commie art style logo. Google Images Lenin and I think you will see the style on the first page. Bold, Epic, easy to print...

cuervo72
10-29-2003, 08:18 AM
You know, I hadn't even thought of that aspect of the nickname until I started searching. I think I know which image you're thinking of - red/black with the hammer & sickle on his forhead. Sharp image actually. Of course it is Lenin...

Maybe I'll think of another nickname with a less sinister connotation.

FWIW, the other way I thought of going involved a cool looking spider image - google image "menace", page 6.

Hmmm. . . . I've been debating where to put my team . . .

I spent a year in Fairbanks, AK. They could use a professional football team, for sure. I think that they win out.

Let's make the Fairbanks Northstars.

curevo--if you do not mind working some of your magic. . . I have attached an image that (hopefully) will look good on the helmet. If you can make the helmet background fit the background of the logo, it should not look too bad. Thanks in advance.

I like the white too. Yeah, I have to fix the backward helmet. I did all of my dynasty helmets pointing to the left, but then I believe it was mckerney wanted me to do his Boxcars helmet to the right, so i started doing all of them that way, and did yours that way as well. Then it occurred to me that cthomers was facing to the left, so I figured any I did for the other league could be to the right (except Jeeber's, which was the first), and ones for the IHOF would be to the left. So I need to flip yours (which would be easy without the text :) )!

Ok, with a little artistic direction I've reworked the Red Menace helmet:

I also have another design I was working on using a Viking that I thought looks pretty good:

If anyone is interested in using it, I can tweak the colors (there are a couple of green schemes I'm thinking of trying).

Sure. I must be somewhat colorblind, because this is the second request I've gotten to make something less purple, when it looks blue to me :) That will be no problem though, I'll post it in place above.

(hmm, just looked at the hex code for the blue, which is 01027D; very little red or green, so it SHOULD be blue. Maybe it's my shadowing. But I'll still darken it.)

By blanks do you mean blank helmets? Looks like you found the template I posted, and helmets I use for base color schemes are at http://www.misterhabs.com/helmets.htm but I can't find all color combos. But they're good enough to work with. Stripes give me some trouble, and there were some larger helmets at theSLE.com that I grabbed before they shutdown.

HA, if you post the logo by itself I can clean up your helmet for you. Are those stripes red and blue?

i don't know how to post the image by itself. i don't have it uploaded to a website or anything. don't know how to do it.

yes, those stripes are blue and red. one big solid red bar in the middle flanked by a thinner blue stripe on either side. i kinda wanted the hero on the helmet (the flying hero) to be a generic hero, not specifically Superman. but that pose was the EXACT pose i wanted so i went with that. when i get better with this i want to have a football tucked into the hero's arm. now that's a logo.

I had just wondered where you got the image from, if you have the url for the original I could grab it, but cutting it out of the helmet you posted should be good enough, your version is pretty large and I would need to shrink it anyhow. I can make the hero more generic by getting rid of the Superman logo. I'll see what I can do about a football :)

Funny, the reason why I stumbled upon that problematic Superfriends site was that I was looking for the Green Lantern logo...

we're pleased to unveil the protoypes for the 2003 Astoria Heroes uniforms.

the one on the left is our home uniform, the one on the right is our road uniform. the home uni's have the exact team colors, while the road uni's have the mock-ups for what we want to do (the blue on the road jersey's are a lighter blue than what we intend to use). we want the superman "shield", but instead of the "S" we'll be using numbers. you'll see the 2 red stripes on the jerseys, well they extend to cover the entire of the back of the jersey to insinuate a red "cape".
