Robinson High Coach DePue Feels Wrath Of Sapp (http://bucs.tbo.com/bucs/MGAP29S54MD.html)

TAMPA - Mike DePue has been a high school football coach for nearly a quarter of a century, a Bucs season-ticket holder for more than 20 years and, until a recent run-in with the six-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle, a fan of Warren Sapp.
An invited guest of the Bucs as their high school Coach of the Week, DePue says he found himself the object of verbal abuse from Sapp at a recent Tampa Bay practice. Afterward, DePue wrote a letter to Bucs General Manager Rich McKay and Coach Jon Gruden thanking them for their hospitality and the award - which includes a $1,000 donation to Robinson's football program - but notifying them of the altercation with Sapp.

According to DePue, he and two of his assistants, Rob Burns and Vaughn Volpi, were at One Buc Place viewing practice from the sideline when Sapp walked to an area near them and ``threw a tantrum,'' apparently for DePue making eye contact with Sapp.

``I was just looking around in practice and he [Sapp] said to me in a confrontational tone, `Do you see what you're looking for?' '' DePue said.

And as Sapp walked back toward practice, DePue said Sapp used foul language and said he would ``give me more [verbal] grief if I looked at him again.''

DePue's initial reaction to Sapp's outburst was one of shock. He says that being a coach, he knows proper etiquette and protocol during practice. From where he and his assistants were standing, DePue believes he didn't invade any player's ``personal space.'' In fact, defensive end Simeon Rice and Gruden made it a point to greet them during practice, DePue said.

But after the confrontation with Sapp, DePue says the experience at One Buc Place has been soured.

``It just left a bad taste in our mouths,'' DePue said. ``We were invited guests and it was totally uncalled for. But bottom line, I've got much more important things going on in my life than worrying about Warren Sapp giving me a hard time.''

The Bucs declined comment on the matter and said Sapp was unavailable.

Warren Sapp is suck an ass. On the radio the other day they were discussing whether the Cowboys should go after Sapp if the Bucs don't re-sign him after this season. I sure as hell hope they wouldn't. The dude is on the downside of his career and he's nothing more than a distraction at this point...

The man needs to get a grip...

I agree. He's another player who's had success and now acts like something is owed him.

I saw the typo after I posted it, but I decided not to edit it just because it still makes sense... :)

I never really followed Tampa, except in the most general sense. Maybe some of you who have, could enlighten me. Has Sapp always been such an aberant character? I know he was/has been a trash talker on the field, but has it escalated this season, or has it finally just reached national attention? On a related note, is there a Miami Hurricanes players that doesn't embrace this crap ass 'thug' image?

Usually it was just an onfield thing, but it's definitely escalated this year... Either because he knows he has to cause trouble to get attention because his skills won't anymore, or he thinks he can do anything he wants now that he won a superbowl.

As a lifelong Bucs fan, I have had the pleasure of following Sapp throughout his entire career.

The early years were proving everybody wrong about the drugs...not that the media ever came back and gave him credit after spending a whole lot of air time discrediting him and the Bucs for selecting him.

Then the rise of the Bucs saw the domination from Sapp and the Human Sound Bite was on fire, going after Favre and jawing with everybody. While most everybody hated him, Bucs fans adored him.

Now beginning last year and this year, we are seeing a lot of negative press about Sapp. Something has happened, maybe it's the declining defense, maybe it's Rice and Brooks getting more credit these days, maybe Gruden is sucking up the air time....but whatever it is, it's unusual.

He has always talked and will always talk, but it used to seem like he was in control, now he seems to be forcing the issue.

But hey, at least he hasn't stabbed anyone in practice like the Cowboys do or beaten up another player like the Redskins do. :)

I don't ever remember hearing about a Cowboy being stabbed at practice.

It was in the dorms at night during training camp. Some sort of hair cut gone bad. And it was like six years ago. Get your damn facts straight... :)

Well, if the Cowboys would get in trouble every week like they used to I wouldn't have that problem! :)

Well, if you want to you could make fun of Eddie Griffin (http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/topstory/2179689) of my Rockets...

I'm just wondering how much longer until the Jailblazers trade us for him...

The Michael Wesbrook - Stephen Davis altercation was years ago... and I think Davis got the last laugh.

Maybe you should instead refer to the Bill Romanowski incident with the Raiders earlier this year...

Oh, and Warren Sapp is still an ass. And he's overrated.
