Jim patches well, and Jim patches early.

That said, any game of this complexity will almost certainly need patching before it is ready to go.

In my solo careers, I always wait for a couple of patches to come down the pipe before I get into my "serious" careers.

Should we do that with this league? What are people's thoughts?

Pre-patch we might want to go through a limited dry run to see if we can find any errors ourselves and to get the mechanics of the league (file transfers, etc) down before going "live".

I think everyone's intention is to have this league last a long time. So, the initial meaningful stages -- things like an initial draft and such -- will be very important to those who want to participate. I think it would be worth a round or two of public play (and potentially finding pacthable problems) before the league commits to taking those first big steps.

I don't say this based on any particular insder knowledge - just based on some bad experiences in other multiplayer leagues, and my imagination on how those could be magnified with any game that may need a tweak or two.

I think that giving things a week or so, allowing for solo play and for us to become familiar with the game a bit would be a good idea.

I agree that we should let it play out a bit.

Dola--Plus, we're still awaiting member #32 (Solecismic) to say yes or no. I haven't reminded him of that fac, since I'd much rather him be working on getting 2K4 out than worrying about IHOF.

Somewhere down the line, we should discuss how many sims we should do a week and when. I figure 2 a week would be ok.

I think doing a test run is a good idea.

Personally we should take our time with this and try to get the kinks worked out before we go "live". Before I left I was working on a league template but my progress was... ummm slow.

Yeah, I'd say 2 a week is good. This will keep things moving a bit and still probably give time for strategy w/o being too much.

When figuring that out we might also take into account how many seasons we want to finish in a calendar year, including any "offseasons".

I'm all for making a test run to make sure that the commissioner functions are working properly.

Awww man, you mean I have to play this solo? ;) I vote to go through some dry runs as an online league.

I don't think we wanna go through the trouble of setting something up and have it just for a test.

Some time that's not right away.

I don't think it would take much to set it up. It's not like we'd go through a ton of time with it.

Keep things stock, randomly assign teams, run a full season over the course of a week or so (with, perhaps, a pair of roster submissions, etc, just to get a feel for export/import). Then go over the offseason in a bit more detail, but still not full fledged, just so we all can make sure we understand how things run.

Something simple and generic would work and might be a good idea.

Well, if we have the 32 people already sitting ready, what's the problem in kinda test playing with those 32 people before starting the "real" multiplayer game?

At least then we can all get familiar with how drafting and free agency and all works in the multiplayer game.

A dry run sounds like a good idea to me.

You know, it sounds like a dry run would not be that difficult. We could simply use the default/stock player file, with default rosters, make a few adjustments, and sim a season or so, just to get all of us familiar with the multiplayer mechanics - especially with regards to the relevant parties importing/exporting files.
