If anyone can provide any info about Destin, the more the better. I've never even been there...but the adventure of it is half the fun!

Great news!
Hey, where is Destin? Will that make you a Jaguar, Dolphin, or Bucs fan?

It's West of Tallahassee, on the coast but between Pensacola and Tallahassee. A 2 hour drive from here.
In this town, the Bucs are a strong favorite. My arrival here coincided with the Bucs assent from the depths of hell, so I don't know how much of that is attributable to the fandom around here, or whether it's simply the fact that TB's radio announcer is also FSU's announcer. Jax is a distant second, with the transplants like my wife making up the Dolphins' contingent.

My aunt and uncle have a house in Fort Walton Beach. The whole area is a big Air Force town, with Eglin and Hurlburt AFB in the immediate area.
The beaches are fantastic! White sand, clear blue water, I loved going for visits. I remember about 10 years ago when I went right before Thanksgiving, and was able to go windsurfing! I was only around for a week or so at a time, but I had a blast.
Congrats!

Not to sure about the Destin metropolitian area, but Okalossa County voted 73.7% for Bush - highest in the state (http://www.polidata.org/en2000/fl00pcy.pdf).
I may just join you down there, the lack of dissenting vocies would be nice for a change :)!

Hmm, it also says that 46.3% voted for Buchanan, and 38.4% voted for Gore! :D :p :D

Yeah, you better break out the Seminoles jersey or your gonna be beaten by someone. Unless you go for that then...well thats your business.
Great news, I hope you like it there.

Actually no, I'm in Tallahassee. There may be Gator fans around(they're everywhere), but Destin is not the "middle of Gator country!"
I can't tell you much about Destin, honestly. Nice place, though, at least in the resort area. And there's some fine outlet shopping around there as well.

Congrats on the job Blackadar... as for destin.... :)
When I was in highschool oh about a century or two ago.... Destin was one of -the- popular Spring break hangouts for all us Georgia Highschoolers. When all the old spots got overcrowded by everyone, many people went to Destin... My remembering of it (once again from about a century or two ago), was that it had great beaches, but was built up hugely as a beach tourist town.. lots of hotels, shops, Touristy shops, etc.. Probably gets crowded between early march and Early may with kids, and then probably sees alot of tourism by familys in the summer times...
of course, all of that info may be really out of date now :)
So finally you got a job in Florida. Hope the company does not go bankrupt like the one you nearly went to !

The area is a bit bizarre, from what I can tell as a visitor, Blackie.
Destin and Ft Walton Beach are resort towns on barrier islands which happen to be barriers for a county seemingly dominated by the military base(s). Going there for business is always a bit bizarre because the nearest hotels are all mostly there for resort purposes (on the water and such) not geared for the business traveller.
What is your business, if you do not mind me asking? I ask because I had always imagined all business in that area to be related to supporting the bases, or tourism-related.
Bad news Kysrup, in the two days I just spent there, the ratio of (obvious) Gator fans to 'Nole fans was about 100-0. I thought I was really close to Gainesville. I also had an uncle who lived in Pensacola for 6 years, and he said the place was almost completely UF.

That's interesting, although not too surprising. UF has been around for a long time and has fans pretty much everywhere. FSU has only been a coed school since 1947. Still, I kinda figured that being as close to Tally as they are, there might be more FSU fans there. Guess not.

I perhaps did not put in strong enough of a disclaimer. Mine is definitely an outsider's view. I just remarked on the number of hats/shirts/pickups I saw in 48 hours, in a small piece of geography, adorned with gator gear.

No, I believe it. I've noticed that even around here, there are an inordinate number of people who "dress up" their cars/trucks in UF gear. UF has statewide appeal, since for football, it was, for a long time, the only true state-sponsored football team of any consequence. FSU was a girls school until 1947, and of course only became something in football in the 80's. Miami is a private school, but the fact that it's in south Florida is also a factor in its limited appeal north of Orlando.
