let's see:
-studied computer science
-employed as a software engineer
-enjoy text sports sims
-enjoy computer role playing games
-read nonfiction and listen to classical music for pleasure
What do you think? :)
However, in my defense, I've never liked Star Trek or sci-fi in general, so I can't be a total geek!

My girlfriend offered her opinion without being asked:
"Josh, I love you, but you're the biggest geek I've ever known."
I guess that can be qualified with "Well, how many have you known?", but...
Well judge yourself:
- I started with computers when i was 8 years old (ZX Spectrum) on 1984.
- My father opened a computers shop when i was 13 and i started to work there every day after school.
- I started to study computer science at university and worked at same time.
- I left the university to fund my own computers shop.
- When i was at university i setup a network at my student flat and played games with my flat mates for days without sleeping/eating. Other times i spent whole days programming or learning more stuff.
- I started an internet company 3 years ago and it's my main work now.
- I work around 12 hours per day on my company (from 8 am to 2pm, then from 4pm to 8pm, and then after some time for my girlfriend/friends/familly/rock band. Then from midnight until my body can handle, usually until 2 to 3 am) of course during that time i also surf the net for pleasure, play games, learn more web design stuff etc. Usually i work also some hours on weekends doing stuff for my company also, nowadays internet is both my work and hobby.
- Because my work is based a lot on relatioships throught internet, my ICQ list is much bigger than my real life contacts.
- I take my notebook on hollydays (and as you could imagine my girlfriend complains).
- I'm addicted to all kind of strategic games (text sims, wargames, economy games, etc).
- I enjoy a lot at hardware big shops just looking all the new tech stuff.
- The thing i would take to a lost island is for sure my notebook (supposing there are power supplies there, else probably suicide)
- I barelly watch TV since some time ago, i can read the news in the net and watch movies in my PC, i only watch sports at TV or some bored stuff that girfriends usually enjoy.
- I could also let my girlfriend to write here and she will say how much she hates computers thx to me.
Damn the more i write the more sad i sound :)

(You make the call.)

PRO: Made a 5 on the AP Computer Science exam in high school.
CON: Lettered in four sports in high school.
PRO: Yeah, but he won the Academic Award for every sport he played.
CON: Also won the "Most Spirited" Award, which is essentially a popularity contest.
PRO: Yeah he got letters in four sports, but that football letter doesn't count. It was for being the stadium PA announcer.
CON: Knew enough football to get asked to do several games on radio.
PRO: Has read Jurassic Park and The Lost World at least 10 times each, because he utterly enjoys the "Ian Malcolm" character, played by Goldblum in the movie adaptations.
CON: Has never watched an entire episode of Star Trek.
PRO: Married a girl who was in the drama society in college.
CON: Yeah, but she was also a Tri-Delt, a Ravenel, and she's gorgeous.
PRO: Is utterly happy to spend an entire weekend in the house, playing computer games and surfing the 'net.
CON: Works a highly relational, people-oriented job, and is by all counts successful in that job.
PRO: Usually prefers to wear his glasses, even though he has contacts.
CON: Doesn't own a single pocket protector.
PRO: Is an acoustic guitarist.
CON: Got radio airplay in the 80's as a rapper.
PRO: Writes a "dynasty report" about a high school football team.
CON: ...but several players from that team, some of the most highly recruited in the nation, hang out with him (without even being forced).
PRO: Calls himself the "H.N.I.C." of an internet message board. (Sounds like "King of the Dipshits" from 16 Candles, doesn't it???.)
CON: YEAH, BUT HE IS IN CHARGE OF THE COCKIEST AND FUNNIEST MESSAGE BOARD ON THE WHOLE DADGUM INTERNET!!!

I'm not sure what I am. I always figured geek meant that I had to get good grades which I never got.
Maybe I'm considered a spaz....

I'm not science or math oriented enough to be a geek. I think I'd be considered more of a spaz or dorkwad.

Anyone who whacks off to internet porn has to say yes.

don't confuse nerds with geeks. Geeks don't necesarily get good grades. A nerd is always a geek, but a geek is not necessarily a nerd.

hate to say it, but yes:(
I'm not nearly as geeky as the other members of my family. Especially my oldest brother-
- High School job was creating Web Sites for local companies
- Computer Science major in College
- TA his final year
- Internship at Sun
- First year out of College he moved to NYC and created a company with his College roomate called Jive Software.
- Spends about 12 hrs per day programming and 5 hrs playing Unreal against his employees(maybe not quite that much but you get the idea).

I'd have to say yes. I was basically one of the cooler and funnier of the geeks. Lettered in football as a junior and senior, moonlighted on the cheerleading team in basketball season :) , but was also on the Mathletes and chess teams. I could have fit in more with the cooler crowd, but never did because of my insecurities. Oh, and now I'm a web developer who plays text sims.

According to my wife...I am.
-I have all 5 Star Trek Special Edition movies, and I'm eagerly awaiting #6 in January.
-I rushed over to Best Buy after work today for...The "Weird Al" Yankovic Ultimate Video Collection
-The best known contribution that I've made to the AZ Speech community is my knowledge of the computer program we use to run the tournaments.
-My cassette collection includes over 60 hours of my old college radio show.
Yeah...I suppose I am.

Heck, I think anyone that spends more than 5 minutes a day reading this board should say yes to the geek thing. I mean, come on. :D

This is absolutely true.
Nerd (n). [NURD] a person that will talk another's ear off about a particular subject in detail. Far more than the subject would ever want to know, unless of course, the subject is another nerd. Nerds are highly intelligent and simply pour their smarts into a far too limited number of subject matters and appear dopey and geekish because of this. Would they choose to spread their smarts, they would appear as a regular humans. Nerds come in all flavours, but is most often associated with Computers. There are, computer nerds, football nerds, baseball nerds, DnD nerds, and automobile nerds, just to name a few.
Geek (n) [GEE k] a person that is socially retarded and has trouble communicating. The trouble usually stems from an extremely average intelligence. They long to be 'cool' but are too stupid to be able to climb out of their Geek-holes. They tend to cling together like the last few Cheerios in a bowl of milk and this grouping only proves to further alienate them from the rest of society.
Thus endeth the lesson, Brother Maynard.

I admire geeks and nerds. I hire as many as possible. Who wants a 30 year old guy talking about his dumb coach passing of 4th and inches during his senior year of football?
I want a guy who can give me calculations as to the chances such a play would work, against a certain team, at a certain time, in certain weather conditions, while the band plays the Rocky theme for the 800th time.

The Nerd could give you that. That is the essence of nerd. Don't forget, a lot of people think they are Nerds, when they are in fact, geeks (i.e., they are dumb).
